Mark Shaw
Re-adjusted the ring and pinion gears and took my 1915 "Bumble Buick" speedster for a test drive. I forgot that I had loosened the brakes so I could easily rotate the rear wheels to check gear contact. So when I drove it to the Buick Barn, I had almost no brakes. I re-adjusted the brakes by using a gravel driveway to verify that both wheels locked up at the same time. Then I drove it on pavement to do the same. With everything adjusted correctly, I drove it into the Buick Barn and parked nose to nose with a friend's Model T Speedster.
cxgvd
Rather than show you more photos of our 1913 Buick model 31 I dolled up the car with some accessory items to show our local car club friends at a BBQ this afternoon. The flip top rad cap is original nickel or German silver finish which I had a machinist adapt for our car. The motometer manufacturer is unknown to me but has a 1915 date and the red mercury rises and falls with the engine temp. I have had this spare mounted trunk longer than I have had the Buick and to think it is made from paper and has survived since 1910. It leaves the house rarely and only in sunshine, not even risking it on a cloudy day. Finally I added a brake lamp which appears age correct to me and adds some measure of safety to the Buick. cxgvd
We had nearly 70 people at the local car club pig roast and our 1913 Buick was a big hit. We offered rides after dinner, I lighted the acetylene head lamps and electrified side lamps for the drive home. It was dusk when we arrived and snapped a few photos. MCHinson
I went to a local car show at a church today. The 50/50 raffle sales folks appreciated my 1937 Model 80C. They were using it for the "car length" ticket selection as it was apparently the longest car they could find to use for that.
Malo48
We took a drive out to a great show in Blue Island hosted by the Romin' Chariots and inadvertently won a trophy! After the show, we went down the street for tacos and parked under this landmark neon (the store's been closed for a couple of years but so glad they still light the sign).
Den41Buick
Just got back from having a picnic lunch on the Woodstock, CT common, overlooking the recently restored clock tower on the Woodstock Academy building. It’s nice to see it restored and the clock working. Always a nice destination. Sometimes rather noisy with the stream of motorcycles driving route 169.
60FlatTop
No great rides but everything got shuffled in the garage. It is nice to be at a point where my cars all steer, start, ant stop. I must need another project. I came in for supper and my wife asked "Were all your cars in the yard?" Checked the lights on the Riviera and put the '60 up on the KwikLift to adjust a pipe hanger I put new rubber in. Peaceful out there.
Buicknutty
I am prepping three cars to take to Oshawa for an event at the home of Sam McLaughlin, the founder of McLaughlin Motors which then became GM of Canada. The cars are the '16 McLaughlin, the '41 McLaughlin Buick, both built there, and then the Reatta as a modern counterpoint, if you will. The '16 be trailered the 100 miles or so each way, but the other two will be driven. I haven't driven the '41 much for a couple of months so I took it out for a run and to get gas as well, and it was running perfectly, driving great on the new wide whites too. Gassed it up and came home. The '16 only got a quickie spin to warm her up a bit before parking it back in the garage. I'm still doing some detailing on the '16, then I'll start on the '41. It looks nice, and I think it looks fabulous (sorry guys, but it is my car) sitting there in the late day light, but it needs a bunch of little things to spiff it up. I'm slower than I used to be, and with arthritis in my hand this polishing and such is very hard on it, and I can't do too much at once. So about 40 miles on the '41, and only one or two on the '16 today. Also the top if up on the '16, to resecure it, but it is in pretty terrible shape, which is why you have always seen pictures of it with the top down. Marty Roth
We drove the 1937 Roadmaster 80C Phaeton all last week on the VMCCA Glidden Tour based in Saratoga Springs, New York. Other than my noisy exhaust manifold leak, the car drove the approximately 500 plus miles flawlessly. We also got to visit a couple of collections, and I'll post some pics later. 95Cardinal
The inaugural EyesOn Design Driving Tour took place on Friday, September 17. This was the Caballero's first tour; just over 100 miles in beautiful weather. Great shakedown run! @1957buickjim and @Larry Schramm were also on the tour. Edwin The Kid
I got to drive a 55 Special today! The freshman class at McPherson visited a local collection and we got to drive a bunch of cars. The Buick was awesome, it ran really well. I'm not sure why but at some point the hood and passenger fender were painted a different green.
Buicknutty
I have been getting the three cars ready to take Oshawa for the final Homecoming of the McLaughlin Buick Club this weekend. On Tuesday I drove the '16 back up to my friend's place who is going to trailer it there and back for me. Then we have been getting the other two, with my wife doing the Reatta, cleaned and detailed. The Reatta didn't need too much, and it is now ready. I've been poking away on the '41 for the last week, doing some touch ups and then a glaze and waxing on it. So here is my son Graham checking his work on the back of the car. Then a bunch of detailing on the inside to do as well. My time doing some of this is limited due arthritis in my hand, so I have to do this in short stints. My wife thinks I'm just too fussy! The other thing I never did get done was the correct valve cover lettering. This being a Canadian car it is similar to the US models, but of course not the same. So I had a local shop recreate the lettering digitally and do a cut vinyl stencil for me. Which I applied to the valve cover and painted it red. This is taken right before I started to shoot the paint. I hope to show a nice finished version back on the car in a day or so. This brings up the subject of correct colours. I have never seen a Canadian '41 with a Dante Red engine, including this one and I spoke with owners as far back as the early 50's. I actually talked to a gent who learned to drive on this car, and did his road test in it in 1955. We cannot seem to determine the correct colour for the engine now as GM Canada discarded all relevant info many many decades ago, so all we have now is word of mouth. Some have suggested Canadian engines were black. I just don't know, so in my wisdom I decided to paint the engine 1940 Buick grey, as it is known some early '41s were painted this colour. The valve cover I've pictured was repainted by the previous owner in the 80's, but the grey is too light, but we think the red lettering is right. That gent, long since deceased was a professional sign painter and his widow told me he copied the original, and this style agrees with what we believe to be correct. Who knows, some day if the correct combo can be determined without doubt then I'll repaint it. Till then it stays as it is, which looks nice. Well I hope it will look nice when the masking comes off. Buicknutty
Well we have made safe and sound to the hotel, both the Reatta and the 41 Roadmaster ran great, however I lost a hub cap on the highway and it went into the median area where there were no shoulders, so no way to retrieve it. I have spares, and my daughter is coming out on Sunday and will bring another with her. Too bad to loose one though. That wheel has the poorest clips on it, as they are replacements for the original ones which had rusted out. I intended to remove it before the long highway trip but forgot. The trip was a bit over 140 miles and drove at an indicated 70 most of the time, which means the only vehicles I passed were some particularly slow trucks, as everyone else is driving way faster than that! Here's a picture of the '41 at the hotel near Oshawa Ont. Last night the we wrapped the '16 up and secured it on the trailer for my friend to bring out for the main event. Also the paint came out pretty well on the valve cover so here's a picture of the reinstalled, but with the air cleaner and plug cover still to go. The bit of red lettering seems to dress up the engine compartment quite nicely. The paint was still soft so there are still a few specks to clean off it once it gets some heat to fully cure it.
Den41Buick
Beautiful Fall day for a picnic. We drove to the Bridgetown area of the town my wife and I grew up for a picnic at the White Mill Park. It was built on the location of a former woolen mill. I remember the night when I was a kid when the mill burned to the ground. The night sky was red and the embers were flying everywhere. Most of the mills in the area suffered the same fate, except for my wife’s family mill which was recently converted into housing. We then took a drive to Wallum Lake and then home for ice cream. Den41Buick
Just returned from taking both 41’s out for a ride. I took the Roadmaster out for a ride and discovered a car show going on across from the state police headquarters. Not sure who was putting it on. The cars were mostly modern except for the Edsel I met at the stop light. I then went home to pick up the Special. I took a ride on the back roads to Thompson CT. I saw a few antiques along the way. It was a great day for a ride. I couldn’t resist taking both cars out. jvelde
Hi Ben, we will be going on the AACA Central Division Tour in Broken Arrow. Will be too far East of you stop by, but appreciate the offer. Should get to see some more of Rte 66, since the tour is further East than what we saw while at the Buick Nationals a few years ago. Larry Schramm
Well Joyce and I went for another tour with the HCCA in Iowa last week. It was the Red Flag Tour. Jeff Krug and his team put on a great tour. It was a lot of fun and we all got to see some interesting places. We averaged more than 100 miles per day of the tour. Below are some of the sites that we saw and visited. From what I was told, about 45 vehicles were registered, 41 were actually came to the tour. All of the cars were 1915 and older. This is a visit to a winery. We could have some of the wares and we had lunch here. On the road. The weather was excellent for touring. About 50deg F in the morning and about 70deg F by noon. Larry Schramm
The third day of the tour we started with breakfast at the New London, Iowa historical Museum. It was a very nice breakfast that we were treated to. There were mostly "classic kitchen tables" throughout the museum with table cloths and china for breakfast. There were only two long tables. The folks were super nice. It was here that we drove from New London, Iowa to Brighton, Iowa. This whole experience was a class act. Terry Wiegand and my wife Joyce below at breakfast. We ended the day with another 100+ miles and over 1,600 miles for the year. Larry Schramm
For completing the New London, Iowa to Brighton, Iowa drive everyone was given a certificate of completion. The certificate had the official city seal from both cities. Very nice touch. Everyone that came on the tour was given a very nice medallion. It is about 3 inches in diameter.
