I went through all the fuel and electrical scenarios, including new coil, on a '54 once and finally tried a coil from another of my running 54's. MCHinson Posted May 27, 2018 Share Posted May 27, 2018 Brian, If I were you, I would swap a coil from another car that runs well and try it. If that does not solve it, I would swap the condensor from the known good car and try that. If that does not fix it, I would replace the electric fuel pump and see if that solves the problem. Those would be my first three suspects. If none of that fixes it, I would make sure that the exhaust valve body does not have the butterfly valve stuck where it is preheating the carburetor all the time. It is unlikely but possible for the internal butterfuly to be stuck in one position even if the valve appears to be working normally externally. Didn't see the owner but must have pissed him off as he disappeared shortly thereafter. I heard later that the car had been under restoration for 20 years. Meanwhile I've owned mine for 15 years in September, and put 25K on it. I wonder if he has as much fun with his as I've had with mine? Then Thursday nite I took the 56 to a Hemmings Cruise in. Unfortunately I left home too late and they did not let me in when I got there. So I parked on the hill across the street where they send the overflow. After a short while I left and just enjoyed the drive home. I didn't even take any pictures but I did get almost 100 miles on it. Today I took the Electra to the Buick Day shoot out, at the Lebanon Valley drag strip, which is 45 miles from where I live. The Buick shoot out was organized by the Northeast Chapter of the GSCA , whose principals are the same guys who run the BCA Performance Division. It was a small event for the Buicks with 18 racers and about another 10 cars for show. It was my first time at the drag races ever, and I must admit,,it was exciting. There were at least 90 other cars and motorcycles running today too, but I only watched the Buick powered cars, and instead manned a booth to promote the BCA, and our local Chapter. Top down, 80 degrees, 65 miles per hour on the open road, full tank of high test, wife beside me in the front seat... and the other '58s... Does life get any better??? My '36 is off the road for the moment for repairs so I had a chance to drive a '83 Riv and a '64 Electra....quite a deal different from my '36 Enjoy the few photos....the young lady in the last photo was quite taken with the 72 Riv and asked for a photo. I had seen the car at other local shows but never got a chance to talk to the owner. It was originally an east coast car owned by a priest. On the way home I managed to run out of gas about 10 minutes from home. Still looks pretty good sitting on the side of the road though. Running out of gas caused it to vapor lock in the record heat we're having, 91 degrees yesterday, 20 above normal. Hope it cools off for the nationals in a couple of weeks. Took it to get a new set of Michelins put on it, replacing the date code "19 08" Sears MIchelin Weatherwise radials. 10 years old! That ONE change made it ride and drive much better! Drove it about 75 miles to get the tires broken-in some. No need to replace the struts/shocks now! A great car for trips! As I got back toward the farm, a new noise/worsened old noise got louder . . . a/c compressor. Now parked back in the new building until I get a new one. When I moved the car, it got quieter, though, but still there. Found it on our used car lot! Started out as a rental car in Hawaii. Sold to its first retail owner and it lived northeast of Abilene, TX pretty much the rest of its life (according to Carfax). Something of an impulse purchase after my 2005 Impala broke it's third flywheel. 2005 LeSabre Limited. 89K miles. Light silver/tan-gold tone leather. Interior looks really NEW, a few minor hickeys on the outside. I found an inch of water in the spare tire well. Later found a lh rr sunroof drain tube that never had been connected to its outside connection! Bought it to replace the 2005 Impala with 180k on it. Later determined to keep the Impala (very low resale, even for the miles) as the Buick is too nice for daily/to work uses. Enjoy! Lots amazing roads, and views, though we were hampered by some poor weather, but fortunately the rain held bay during most of the driving. A small group of 10 cars, which included a few late models, 2010- 2016, with the oldest being a nice '69 Skylark convert, the newer were mostly Buicks, though. Actually, only one was a Non-Buick! (Brain Freeze) It was a 203 mile roundtrip for us in the Electra and it was a pleasant ride both ways to top it all off. Buicknutty Posted May 30, 2018 Share Posted May 30, 2018 I drove the '41 Roadmaster to a local cruise night, less than 15 miles round trip, but it was nice to get it out and drive a bit with it. I parked beside three Grand Nationals, and there was a nice Allante there that I hadn't seen before, plus a bunch of the "usual suspects", which was nice to talk so many other friends. 38Buick 80C Posted June 2, 2018 Share Posted June 2, 2018 (edited) I did 60 miles in the Model 87 this morning...used a 1 qt of oil and filled up after getting 8.75 MPG... My oil leak seems to definitely be better (I replaced the valve cover, push rod cover and oil pan gaskets) but still leaking very bad from the front block somewhere. If stop leak doesn't fix it (which it is too much oil in my opinion for stop leak to fix) I REALLY don't want to have to pull the whole front end off the car to get to the various gaskets for the water pump timing chain cover and the motor mount. OH and found some pin hole leaks at the top of the radiator too. But in spite of all that it was a great day for a drive and the car drove beautifully and got lots of compliments at Cars and Coffee which was nice. I get the feeling people get tired of rows and rows of late model Mustangs and Bimmers... I'd really like to drive it to Hershey this year and OKC for 2019 BCA National. If I can get this oil leak squelched I see no reason why it cant do both, but we will see. Fantastic venue spread over 108 acres and saw many vehicles of all types and conditions. Buicknutty Posted June 3, 2018 Share Posted June 3, 2018 After a bit more tinkering, I took the 41 Roadmaster out for about a 3/4 hour run, and stopped for coffee on the way home. Ran well, except for a bit of hiccups at higher speed 65 or so, which then seemed to go away. Then took the secondary highway home, and was great at the 45-50 MPH range. I'm always fiddling with the carbs on this to keep it in the sweet spot. One of the issues seems to be the air weighted butterfly under the rear carb, I lube it up, and its' fine for a while, then it starts sticking again. old-tank Posted June 3, 2018 Share Posted June 3, 2018 Made a 80 mile highway trip in 101* heat as a "stress test". The car and A/C performed well and is ready for the trip to Denver. The only issue is I don't know if I would perform waiting 1-1.5 hours for roadside assistance if there was a breakdown. We were able to park in the 50th Anniversary section of the show with some pretty awesome 68 Pontiacs. We received a 3rd place trophy in the 1960-1969 Buick-Olds-Cadillac classification. We tied with a 1968 Buick Electra 225 convertible. We were also awarded a trophy for Best 50 year old Buick-Olds-Cadillac and we were presented with this 50th Anniversary Buick-Olds-Cadillac display banner. Had a great time and the quality and variety of the Muscle Car class was outstanding. Idle and moderate speed is nice, idle actually is perfect, but still losing a bit of power at higher speeds, same as before, 65+ MPH, otherwise good. The neat thing was it turned over 99,999 miles on the way home. Unfortunately, by the time I got somewhere that I could take a shot of it, I had rolled up to 00001. A rather interesting truck there, it was an early 50's Mercury one ton truck. It was originally a Western Canada truck, and is very patina'd. The owner has restored it mechanically, but is keeping the patina intact. Naturally a very spartan environment inside it, this is when a truck was a truck! For those unfamiliar with Mercury trucks, these were badge engineered Ford trucks built in Canada for the Canadian market, and production ended in 1968. Buicknutty Posted June 9, 2018 Share Posted June 9, 2018 Today, Friday, we drove out to join a vintage touring group that we are a member of. This is for cars built in 1942, or earlier. This was a difficult choice, as we are only 4 weeks away from our move, and there is still lots to do, but it will be hard to tour here, as it will be over 3 hours away, that's in good conditions, from our new home, so we decided to do this tour. Traffic is always a problem on Friday afternoons, plus some construction, so it took us about 2 1/2 hours to go the 80 miles to our hosts place for a BBQ supper.
