Raise your hand if you drove at least one old Buick this weekend

Agree with Dei's last comments...  And although it's nothing like driving to the National Meet, I did get the '56 out for a 30 mile round trip to the Wednesday Night Cruise in.  First one I've made so far this year, and it was yet another great Buick ride.  I have found a route that takes me round about and adds a few miles to the drive.  But it avoids numerous traffic lights and heavy commuter traffic.  And there I got the chance to park next to my friend Frank, who has taken steps to refurbish and slightly modify his 1960 Invicta.

Refurbishment includes a new paint job outside and engine bay detailing.  Also a new gas tank and all new fuel and brake lines. And he did the brakes with off the shelf rear shoes but relined front shoes, so as to maintain the correct shoe width that is no longer available on the shelf.

Modifications include an Edelbrock carb, some new fangled ribbed valve covers with the word "Nailhead" cast in.  Plus what appears to be a GM HEI distributor with a built in coil, and one of those alternators that looks like a generator.  He also added dual exhaust.   I did not get a picture of the engine bay. but will try to do so at this weekends event.  He also put on Coker Classic wide whites in place of the bias ply wide whites he got with ownership of the car several years ago.  On the outside the car looks original,  while he is very satisfied with the modifications. 1138451587_IMG_23971.thumb.jpg.574d12c95ea722e0561b91fbbb517320.jpg

 

I must admit that I have a real weakness for the intriguing chrome trim on the '59/60 Buicks

 Well folks, we made to the meet a short while ago. About 1230 miles driven to get here. The weather is warm and sunny, but not too hot right now. Though it ran a bit hot at times, the Electra ran beautiful the whole trip.

 Now she has to get us home again in a few days!

Delivered the Limited to Stan Hywet Hall down in Akron in preparation for tomorrow's Father's Day Car Show, which Melanie supervises. They wanted a few cars there early since there will be a news crew there tonight and wanted to have a backdrop for that. There are also two weddings going on tonight, so I presume the cars will be in those photos. Melanie brought her 1956 Chrysler wagon, whose brakes were iffy until Dr. Francini bled them properly (instead of with a vacuum bleeder) and brought the pedal back up. Still not great, but Melanie really wanted the car at the show.

I thought it was an appropriate background for the Limited and the cars look great in front of the manor house. Too bad it's probably going to rain all night and maybe even tomorrow.

This is a Cruise-In open to all, and is run for fund raising purposes, supporting the charity that the Dealership chooses.  This and the past several years it has been for the Boys and Girls Clubs.  

 

This is an evening event, starting @ 3 pm, and lasting till usually 7-8pm, depending on weather. It features a Chinese Auction and 50/50 with a registration process where the first 100 attendees who make a donation to the Charity receive coupons to use at the onsite food vendors.  It has been a fairly successful fund raising effort thanks to the generosity of all who attend.

They enjoyed several activities, like the well equipped playground in this extensive park, and the music of the DJ.  Of course the ice cream was a big deal but they also looked at many of the cars.   For them however, none of the activities were more fun than chasing

With more than 110 cars ( at last count) in attendance,  I found a few vehicles I thought particularly interesting.

The 31 year old female owner was so proud to have this car here!  It was recently pulled from storage, and  they had not had the opportunity to run the car yet, so parked it on the trailer.

A Wildcat, with 3 speed, on the column!  When asked, the driver told us his mom had bought it new in '64, without power steering or brakes.

The Dealership brought some vehicles too.. Including the '25 which I have also photographed before.

Looks good under that light John!

 

Likewise I put a few miles on mine in preparation for tomorrow as we are up early heading to an all day car show and had to fill up with fuel.

 

Did the mandatory tire/white wall cleaning before heading out.

The fuel handle clicked off when full naturally but was surprised at the amount, $58.00 dollars for the '58 Buick. Might just buy a lottery ticket tomorrow...

Backed her in at home and loaded up chairs and the tent should we get a spot where it can be put up. Weather is supposed to stay dry and 77 degrees but will start with the top up for the wife being that early.

Taking another look at that Skyhawk, that’s a nice car.  I can’t be certain, but it’s about 1979.  There was a young fellow at the National from NY who has one and it’s twin is also in the local chapter...red ones.  There was an indoor vendor with a badge in that Skyhawk script, which is different from the 1976.  The spoiler adds to the look, but I think I prefer the earlier quad headlamp front end.  The body looks to be in good shape.

 

I like it when people make some effort to bring a car like that to a show.

That's what I was told.  It is a '79.  I don't have the fellows name, but there is a local Skyhawk here, that looks just like Brad's car.  I saw it once at the garage where I have some work done when needed.  It was that orange/red color, with a stick shift, and the same hubcaps.  Although I do not remember if it was more than a 4 speed.  Anyway, I thought it really looked good!

 

  It is kind of funny how I viewed those cars (not so favorably) when they were new and plentiful, yet now, in the windshield of rarity,  they look much better!  Sorta like this 92 Wagon I have too.  Back in 93 I bought my first new Buick.  I looked at the wagons, but discounted them at the time for one oddity, and a general feeling that they were too cheaply built.  And now I am really enjoying the one I have.

Took about 100 miles of backroad riding and ended up in Medina, famous for its red sandstone, for lunch. This time I had my camera so we made sure to go down Culvert Road. This is "THE" culvert. It is the only tunnel under the  Erie Canal. The culvert was built in 1823 and it does leak a little.

 Another weekend, another event. This it was the '41 Roadmaster's turn to go. We are in Northern Ontario, less than 250 miles from home. With the touring today, we've put about 330 miles on it. Running great, though we lost a hubcap, which we were unable to recover, and it is slipping out of third from time to time. That one is a new issue. I replaced bushings in the linkage, and mounts, etc, so I don't know if its' an issue with that stuff, or something else. One the oldest cars on tour is a 1914 Buick D55, Buick's first 6 cyl, and a '29 joined for a while today, and my '41, of course. The starting mileage was kind of neat, if you are into things like that, 2,999. I'll do a shot of it when we're home.

This weekend was the regular Friday evening cruise and Saturday show called RetroFest, combined this year with RM/Sotheby's 40th Anniversary celebration.  Here are 4 photos of Buicks which attended.  My 1913 surrounded by other cruisers gives an overview of the parking lot.  A lovely, low mileage, light blue Riviera.  A husband and wife story,  the Mrs. bought her dad's Model T Ford roadster, her husband stepped up to a '28 McLaughlin-Buick Master roadster with wire wheels and side mounts.  The last photo is a daily driver 1950 Special.

 

Beautiful weather for a couple of days, the cruise was well over 500 cars, Saturday featured a downtown car show with 850 vehicles.  I am a member of the car club which hosts the event and had many volunteer jobs, RetroFest is all no entry cost for the attendees.  Today, Sunday, we are driving our '13 to Erieau, "a drinking town with a fishing problem" beside lake Erie for perch and ice cream.

As above my wife and I attended the RetroFest Car Show in Chatham, Ontario on Saturday with three other cars driving together from Windsor to Chatham and back.

 

The morning was cool but sunny and soon warmed up to 78 degrees (WITH NO RAIN!!). 

The gang decided to park close to where we entered the downtown area but I went on in to what I thought was an ideal spot to display her in all her well worn glory and dropped the top...

Spent the weekend taking care of some mechanical repairs on Goldie in preparation for the trip to Gettysburg this week.  Replaced two bad U-joints in the driveline, and leaky transmission output shaft seal and pan gasket.  Took her for a 25 mile round-trip shakedown and everything seems good to go.  Tomorrow I plan to do a quick detailing and start packing...  ;)

Today I drove my 1937 Buick Century a little over half way from Wilmington, NC to Canton, Ohio for the 36-38 Buick Club tour. We will drive the rest of the way tomorrow. We are spending the night in Princeton, WV after traveling 377 miles today. This car is a survivor and still equipped with a 6 volt system and bias ply tires.

Good on you Matthew.  I can’t speak to your car, but I know that some cars seem to like bias ply tires better than others.  Radial tires aren’t the be all and end all, unless perhaps folks insist on overdriving what these cars were designed for in terms of speed and braking ability.  A well-maintained car should do just fine with a 6V system and bias ply tires.

 

Great shot...when I give myself enough time, I do like to stop in at the visitor info centres.  It’s a shame so few off them are left on the smaller roads rather than just the Interstate routes.

These were from a car show on the Hudson River at Marist College June 15th. Nice show and a beautiful location. Forgot to post last week. About 80 miles roundtrip.

We arrived for the 36-38 Buick Club tour this afternoon. As we rolled into the host hotel, we have now travelled a total of 665.5 miles in the 1937 Century over the past two days. The club tour starts in the morning. Attached is a quick photo that I took today to give you an idea about the type of terrain that I was driving through most of today.

 Sorry we could not join you again this year. Hopefully next time. We did drive our 37 all last week to our Mason-Dixon show and to meet up with the Heils and Schramms  at the VMCCA nickel tour outside of Gettysburg. That one was only 28 miles from home.  Larry also came to our house with his diagnostic scope to trouble shoot our 1925 standard  as to why it too could not participate on that tour.

 Maybe we could meet up on your way back home as you will have to pass not to far south from Chambersburg.

 We are 2 blocks from route 30 (Lincoln Highway) and 1 mile west of route 81.

Had a great time touring today with the 36-38 Buick Club and my friend Matt Hinson. Beautiful weather, about 15 awesome Buicks, great tour stops, and a nice drive. All the cars, including ours, performed flawlessly, even on the drive home where it was 85 degrees and we were dicing with rush-hour traffic on the highway. The Limited never missed a beat and got a lot of positive comments from the guys on the tour. Felt good to be among Buick guys for a change. Nice job to everyone who put the tour together (they're still touring tomorrow, but we have to get back to work and our kids). Thanks everyone!
