Driven at least 5 days a week! Granted she is not rare or a huge ticket investment like so many collectors cars we and others have owned, but she spent so much of her life as a Sunday only car from new (she had 63,000 orig miles on her when saved) that she deserves the full run she now gets. Our son LOVES going home from school in her each day. His principal told my spouse that when she hears the exhaust reverberating in the other side of her office wall, she knows its time to initiate the school dismissal. Of course all the Eco drivers and $60,000+ new car drivers on the school pick up line hate her...but isn't that the point?

Took the ole 68 3/4 ton Chevy Custom Camper for a spin today to check the original steering wheel that I put on and enjoy the fresh new interior.

She handles great even though the original steering wheel feels real skinny compared to the old sport one that I removed, but I love it cause she's looking original now ! Just feels right regardless how skinny it is.

It was a balmy 10° F in Fairbanks today (trust me, that's positively tropical after our brutal stretch of -40 temps a few weeks ago), so we took the museum's freshly repaired 1922 Wills Sainte Claire sedan out for a drive.

How pretty is that set against the white snow?!

Love it!

Finally got our 1934 Packard out for the first time. Just a quick drive around the resort and she's now back into the shop for a little more work.

Haven't seen much action in this thread lately!

Now that the nice weather's here in Southern Connecticut, I've been driving my '70 Bug here and there, including to work on occasion, and also some shows and cruise nights when I can make 'em.

I had it up to the Central CT Region AACA's great Glastonbury, CT show on Sunday, June 9th--a sample photo is below (that's my son Matt posing with it), and more info about the event appears in Steve Mack's dedicated thread at: http://forums.aaca.org/f213/ccr-aaca-glastonbury-car-show-june-352556.html - and once again I tip my hat to Steve Mack, and all the Central CT Region AACA members for an outstanding meet!

post-34222-143141955175_thumb.jpg

Also was pleased to make it to the Main Street Middletown Classic Car Cruise--a truly amazing gathering, organized by the Eastern Chapter Over The Hill Gang Car Club, ref: Over The Hill Gang Car Club - Eastern Chapter Classic Cars . This event was held Wednesday evening, June 12th--this photo's by my VW buddy Greg, and that's me posing with the car:

post-34222-143141955149_thumb.jpg

And a special shout-out to our friends from the CT VW Association for orchestrating the meeting place and time for the old-VW drivers, so that we could all drive into the Middletown event as a unit, and park together: http://www.ctvwa.org

And from the work-commuting experiences file, these shots were from two afternoons ago, Monday, June 17th. While driving home along Interstate 95 (with the top down, naturally!), through the New Haven area, I'm starting to hear static over the AM radio (that I generally keep tuned to "all-news radio 88" out of New York), and then this amazing, dramatic mass of dark clouds starts drifting over, from, it looked like, the northwest (and heading southeast). When I got to Exit 56 in Branford (CT), I pulled off and over into the commuter parking lot that's just on the south side of the highway (directly adjacent to the public works garage that directly borders the highway, on the east side of Leetes Island Road), and snapped a couple of quick shots:

It started to rain soon after these photos were taken--thankfully I had reached my garage by then!

Looking forward to lots more old car driving fun in 2013. Happy Motoring (and happy Fahrvergnugen)!

I took the Packard out yesterday for about a 5 mile drive. The hot weather has started here but we have had rain the last few days and it was fairly cool and cloudy so both I and the car were comfortable. My summer routine for the prewar car will be early morning driving whenever possible including my Saturday Cars and Coffee stops. The Olds is good anytime but leaving a black car out in 100 degree sun makes it a lot of fun when you get back in - we get spoiled in newer cars with almost no metal interior parts to burn you!

My daughter wanted to go to the library yesterday, so we fired up the wildcat and went for a drive. Stop and go traffic all the way there during 5pm rush hour. First time the '65 had been out in about 9 months. The library we went to didn't have the book she wanted, so we hopped on the highway for a 15 mile trip up the road. Roxanne performed flawlessly. On the way home, we hit a stretch of back roads that were my favorite to explore on my motorcycle and they did not disappoint in the Buick either.

We both had a great time. I'm glad she was looking at the wrong library inventory numbers!

Got my '71 Buick LeSabre out last Friday to run around town doing my Rotary auction solicitations. I've only had it out once since returning from Florida in April - and that was the first time it had been out since last November. In looking at the oil change sticker, I'd only driven it 40 miles since May last year. I put another 30 or so on Friday and Saturday. I was going to take it to a local cruise night on Monday but something else came up and I wasn't able to go. I took my '72 LTD to the cruise the previous week so will try to take the Buick next Monday. This weekend, I plan to take the LTD to the New England Thunderbird Club all car meet in Eliot, Maine. That's just under 100 miles one way for me. I've never been to one of their shows so we'll see. The hand out says it's on the grass with shaded areas.

Ironically (as this was my thread in the first place) I haven't driven my Triumph once yet this year. It needs a major brake overhaul and personal and family issues (I've had to be in Pittsburgh for most of the last 2 months) have left me no time to fix it let alone work on my restoration project.

I am dealing with some family issues also, Dave@, and so I know how that stuff supersedes everything else. I am fulfilling some family obligations through this exact weekend as a matter of fact, and it barely leaves me time to think about other stuff (let alone "do" other stuff).

As I well know: "Ya gotta do what ya gotta do."

Hang in there, and I'm sure this thread'll still be around to be resurrected the next time you have some updates to share.

Took the '55 Porsche to breakfast and drove the '33 Continental Flyer cross-town last Sunday to get to Eyes on Design where I met Dandy Dave!

And here's the proof... Sorry I did not get to see you after the show Barry. Larry Schramm had me seeing more sights and time just sort of got away. The second photo is Barrys lovely wife with him. The Continential Flyer is a stunning car up close. I'll be through town again someday hopefully we can meet up again then. Vantastic Show and really nice folks. Dandy Dave!

So, last Sunday, I did drive to the Northeast Region Thunderbird Club all car show in Eliot, ME. It was 96 miles one way, poured almost the entire trip but cleared after I got on the show grounds. Very nice spot, everyone was very friendly. I actually won 3rd place in the 70's category, first trophy I've ever won. Since the LTD was last in the garage, I used it Mon-Weds around town, then went 25 miles to a cruise in Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, the skies opened up just as I got there so everyone left. Torrential rain all the way back home. There is a show on Sunday in the town next to me so if it's not raining, I plan to go to that. The last completely sunny day we had was a week ago today. We've had at least 5" of rain since according to my rain gage.

I took my 51 Henry J for a cruise around town. It's a bit weathered, but still runs very well.dsc00338zi.jpg

Just over 400 miles in 5 days at the New England Brass and Gas Tour. Based in Rutland, VT. Some rain. Lots of dirt roads. A few low-gear hills. A museum of 19th century precision machine tools, a brewery, the Morgan Horse Farm, Fort Ticonderoga, other cool stuff. Over 90 pre-'16 cars; mine was a '12 Buick.

Planning to drive my '70 VW Bug Convertible about a half hour or so east of here tomorrow morning for a cool-sounding car show in the beautiful Connecticut River town of Essex, CT...

Check out this broadcast e-mail that I received yesterday (pasted in directly below), and note that item #3 *appears* to suggest that you don't necessarily have to be pre-registered (I sent in my pre-registration last week)…

The original event announcement that I worked up for the SAAC Calendar page (SAAC - Calendar of Selected Upcoming Shoreline-Area Antique Auto Events) is pasted in at the bottom of this message…

Nice that the event happens early in the day, allowing you to get on to your various family cook-outs, and what-not, later in the day—and it also benefits a great cause…

Not a lot going on, old-car-wise, in Connecticut tomorrow, so figured I'd pass it along...

Happy Independence Day!

JULY 4, 2013, Thursday, Essex – Essex Automobile Club’s 6th Annual Antique & Classic Car Show, at Hubbard Field, North Main Street, Essex, CT 06426, 10am to 2pm; awards presentation starts at 1:30pm. webmaster’s note – We appreciate Tim Lynch (timlynch3@me.com) of the Essex Auto Club forwarding along both a copy of the press release and the exhibitor pre-registration application form, attached to his e-mail of 5/21/2013. The following is the actual press release wording: “…For immediate release, April 29, 2013: 4th of July Car Show Returns to Essex… The Essex Auto Club has announced its 6th Annual Antique and Classic Car Show for Thursday, July 4, 2013. Citing the record-breaking number of exhibitors and attendees at last year’s event, EAC co-founder, Terry Lomme, predicted that the show for 2013 would be even better… “We really think we’ve found the perfect time and location for this show. An All American Holiday in an All American Town! What could be better”!... The show will be held at Hubbard Field on N. Main Street and will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Various classes for pre-war cars, muscle cars, foreign sports cars, exotics, and more will be featured… Wes Bray, also an EAC cofounder, added “the club is proud to continue our tradition of donating a portion of the proceeds from the show to Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut”… Registration Forms and Information for owners of classic, antique (pre-1983) or exotic cars that would like to enter the show should contact the club at info@essexautoclub.com ...” Quoting from the exhibitor entry application form that Mr. Lynch also supplied, which contained a few additional important details: “…The Essex Automobile Club reserves the right to include only those vehicles that meet the EAC criteria of an antique or classic automobile. This generally includes vehicles (restored, customized, or preserved originals) up to the 1983 production year. Vehicles produced after 1983, but considered unusual, exotic or rare, may be included in the show at the discretion of the EAC… This is a people’s choice show with 1st and 2nd place awards given in multiple foreign and domestic classes. The entrance fee for each exhibitor is $15 (includes multiple cars) with a portion of the proceeds from the show being donated to the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut… Exhibitors will be notified 24 hours in advance (by email and telephone) if weather forces postponement or cancellation…” I am sure that you could request your electronic copy of the exhibitor entry application form directly from the Essex Auto Club (info@essexautoclub.com), and I have also saved electronic copies that I can also send to you (my e-mail is CommonGear@aol.com and please don’t forget to specify what you are asking for), and/or if you are not computer-compatible and would like a copy of the exhibitor entry application form on paper via snail mail, just please send me your S.A.S.E. (to the SAAC mailing address: P.O. Box 3353, Stony Creek, CT 06405), and again please do make sure to specify what you are asking for—thanks! Additional thoughts - I definitely agree with the sentiments expressed in the press release about how great an idea it is to hold this event on July 4th (and note that it ends early enough in the day so that you can get on to your family cookouts or whatever in the afternoon) in the “classic” town of Essex, Connecticut, and I also applaud the Essex Auto Club for donating a portion of the proceeds to such a worthy cause, namely the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut – read about the wonderful work they do at their official web site: Child & Family Agency | Social Programs for Children, Family Therapy in CT | Home . Bravo Essex Auto Club! Please be sure to visit the Essex Auto Club's online home at: Essex Automobile Club (this event was added to this calendar as of 5/22/2013)

Drove my freshly finished 66 F250 to a show today,I usually take my 37 Chevy p/u to that show but it was rainy today and the 66 has working wipers.

Was that the Xenia Show? We are visiting Inlaws in the edge of Indiana and was planning on going in my BIL's 38 Ford but the weather looked like it was going to be a wash out so we passed on the whole show.

I haven't had my cars out all week, but late this afternoon, I was out in my driveway when I heard a truck coming up the hill in front of my house. It was my friend and neighbor in his '42 Ford flat bed truck. He bought it non-running 2 years ago and has been tinkering on it since. This was his maiden run. I got in my car and drove down the street to his house to congratulate him. We talked for about 15 minutes before a thunderstorm moved in. It was great. Another friend of ours wants him to take it to the local cruise in next Monday night so I think we convinced him. We're going to meet at his house and escort him. Should be fun!

Took my Stanley to the neighborhood Fourth of July picnic and gave rides until the oil pressure quit. Took the Stanley home, brought out the '12 Buick, and gave a few more rides. Then I regressed (or was it progressed?) to hot dogs, apple pie, brownies and ice cream. Good day!

Well, instead of driving the '70 Bug out to a local-area car show like I had been thinking of doing, I decided to work on finishing up the Creeky '69 Bug's brake hydraulics (a project that started out as a simple master cylinder replacement a month or so ago, and which "blossomed" into much more)...

Once I was finally finished, I decided to do some local-area test driving on a beautiful morning, Thursday, July 4th, 2013...

First stop was the southern end of Thimble Islands Road, at the intersection of Flying Point Road & Prospect Hill Road, in Stony Creek. Some of the Thimble Islands themselves are visible in the background...

post-34222-143141993071_thumb.jpg

And after that I drove over to Guilford, to another scenic couple of spots, at the end of Trolley Road, and the beach at Joshua Cove. Looked like low tide, and some clammers busy out there also...

post-34222-143141993102_thumb.jpg

Later on in the day I attended a big family cookout (drove the '70 Bug there--with the TOP DOWN of course!).

In all, it was a Great Independence Day 2013!

I bought 27 random (mostly Carter) fuel pumps and a few other odds and ends from an online auction about 45 minutes from me.

Felt it was only natural to drive a classic car to pick up classic car parts, so took the '65 Wildcat.

Beautiful day and I had a beautiful co-pilot! (someone please tell my wife I said that....I need the points!)

Drove the '88 BMW 528e a short distance. It had been at a repair shop for 3-1/2 years, and now the fuel delivery system has been replaced piece-by-piece, leading us to the next step of re-doing the tank, or replacing it. This used to be a fun little sedan to drive. It will probably take a while to get it back to being dependable. Tomorrow we may get out the '70 Caddy convertible or the Packard.
