WPVT
Has anyone seen the new NetFlix movie, "The Irishman". It's a 3 1/2 hour gangster movie starring Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel among others. In the very beginning DeNiro is driving what looks like a big 1952 Chevy box truck down the road when it , lurches and dies. Pesci happens by and diagnoses the problem. Leaning over the fender, he fiddles around a bit and says it's the timing chain, which he proceeds to set right, warning DeNiro that it needs to be replaced. I once had a '52 Chevy with a 216 engine. I don't recall that or the 235 having a timing chain. It had a phenolic cam gear. I know, because I stripped the teeth off once, downshifting too aggressively. I had to tear apart the engine in a restaurant parking lot, 100 miles from home.. Wish I had had Joe Pesci to help. 2
Mikefit
You are right I worked in a Chevy dealership for 3 yrs and got very good at replacing the timing gears on the 6 cylinder Chevy.

John Kelso
If you looked closely he was moving the distributor cap as if a clip were loose. As we all know if the timing chain were broken it wouldn't have restarted. Gave me a chuckle too.
mercer09
Pesci knows nothing about trucks! dont tell him I said that though- he might wipe me out............... movie was too long and meh.
Pfeil
As we all know Chevy straight six has no timing chain. It's gear to gear. Anyroad, when it comes to watching movies I generally have nothing to do with a movie in which the actors/ producers etc. are engaged in political activism. John348
I caught that timing chain comment as well, I am sure most of us broke down with our cars somewhere and somebody offered some useless advice, so I just chalked it up to just that. Then when Deniro found out he was he just politly thanked him for his advice. (I know I would) What I did notice is even though they were able to make them look younger facially, they all moved like men in their mid-70's in certain scenes. Real noticeable when Pacino was getting out of a chair, and when Deniro was laying a beating on the store owner. I watched it twice and was enjoyable to see the three of them play the roles that they were meant to play. I thought that the soundtrack was better in Goodfella's and Casino, considering Robbie Robertson was the music director. Looks like they wiped out a few Checker Cabs in one scene, but then again if they made them look 40 years younger who knows.... 59 minutes ago, Pfeil said: Anyroad, when it comes to watching movies I generally have nothing to do with a movie in which the actors/ producers etc. are engaged in political activism. mike6024
The timing chain was not broken, just so very loose that it jumped a tooth on the sprocket. Pesci reset it on the sprocket so the timing would be correct.

Is that all political activism? or just the activism that you don't agree with? Safe to say you did not see it then Yes, it is ALL. Just because you are a celebrity doesn't mean you are a authority on any given subject and with a big soapbox because of that notoriety you can spread a lot of misinformation and create a following. Besides it's not all that fair is it? I mean not everyone in the industry can say what they want, and if they do they loose a lot of work. 2

Movies are pretty much like books. I have started reading books and found out the author was a real jerk, didn't agree with any of my ideas at all. The I pick up a book some genius wrote that repeats all the things I have been saying and I will read it two or three times. I would have missed a DiNiro movie anyway, anything for a buck has been. I almost made it to five minutes on a grandfather movie he was in. I guess he thought it was better than making a commercial for old people life insurance or a walk in tub. I just hut the TV off completely and read a book. Excellent book, I could have written it myself. Activists. There was another old has been actor at a Senate hearing on dumping plastic in the ocean. They all seemed confused and inept. It aired at night. I told my wife there were a bunch of barges waiting to dump the next morning. Don't let them do it. Sort the stuff out like you were supposed to. Duh!

For me, the same applies to just about EVERY new television series coming out of Hollywood lately. Comedy, drama, etc. Just a few episodes in, and the propaganda machine springs to life. (I think Rosie O'Donnel may secretly be writing all the screen plays). I seem to be using Netflix more for old movies and vintage TV series. The one exception I'll where I'll give in fully to propaganda, is a good old WWII movie. 😄
padgett
I like "Chasing Classic Cars" but the assorted "Street Outlaws" shows has me confused: if they constantly need computers to tune the engines and transmissions, why can't the same computer control wheelspin ?

Don't be confused, they are not using a ECM and sensors that have that provision. My 2012 and 2019 NISSANS have it so we all know it's out there. They probably feel they can pedal it more effectively like many road racers feel about ABS, in fact ABS can be a PITA when you want to hang the tail to point the nose to the apex of the turn you are going through. padgett
I like ABS and TC on the street but agree if on the track you may want to overload the rear end (AKA 4 wheel steering) or even get it swinging through a slalom

Sort of like the IMSA insignia. Once the car is pointed it's a straight line through
padgett
That was the idea of a Peterson Box. Used to demo to complainers by putting an Econoline van straight through without lifting. ps the unnatural stuff is for tight turns and 180s (for 180 I just pinned the nose on the pylon and overpowered the rear. On wide open turns I used to carry the inside front tire on the 'vette over the speed bumps at the apex and just carry about a 20 degree drift. Sunbird was a little softer. Dandy Dave
Of Movies and sound tracks. In Seabiscuit there is a scene where there is a two cylinder John Deere tractor on the track and the operator is told to remove the tractor. When he starts it, the sound track sounds like a Model A Ford driving away. Everybody knows that old John Deere's go Putt, Putt.
