Dad had the use of a 28 Packard with a rumble seat to take to a show for a distant relative in the early 1970s. Mom and dad in the front with little sister, us four older siblings (oldest about 11) lined up in the rumble seat.  What a great time!

I was much younger than today.

But I had restored a 64 Nova SS and took it to the Portland swap meet and came home with an Amphicar.

I remember the first swim, Always glad it had a good bilge pump.

As a 75 year old, I've had many memorable rides in cars airplanes and other military equipment.

As a almost 50 year member of AACA, I've had the pleasure of riding with many other hobbiests on their cars

As a owner restorer, I've restored and driven my own cars from 1915 to 1987.

Last year in the midst of the Covid pandemic, I had a friend come in his 1913 Oakland 640 Touring car and take the 6 cylinder 40 HP car at 50 MPH ride.  Then over a mountain and up a  unpaved river road to another car friends house.   At that point 1913 was the oldest car I'd ever ridden in or driven.   (The 1913 Model T was the previous record for me, What a Difference!)

HIs next vist was in a 1909 Stanley Steamer Mountain Wagon (Not a carpet Cleaner)    A strong fast quiet car with accleration like an Electric car.

The ex-wife and I had gone to Rome, Italy in 1994 to see the sights.  On the last day, the hotel concierge arranged for limousine to take us to DaVinci airport.  On the way out of Rome, the driver went past St Peter's Basilica as a nice final visit (we'd already spent two days there).  Then he tried to get on the freeway, traffic was stopped.  Sounded like the driver swore in Italian, reversed out of the entrance ramp and went tearing through surface roads to get on the highway at a different point.  Once we got on the highway, the driver accelerated his Lancia limo and started tailgating, honking his horn, and flashing his lights as he wove in and out of cars.  I could tell we were going fast.  I looked at the speedometer which was registering 170-180 KPH.  He got us to the airport with time to spare and I gave him a good tip.  That has been my wildest wide so far.

Well, with few hundred thousand miles driven/ridden all over Europe and US in large variety of vintage cars during past 4+ decades, I’d have to say majority of mine have been quite memorable and it would be impossible to qualify one above others, especially when considering numerous experiences involving x-rated content/encounters (many in or on public places/roads/streets/etc) and which all by themselves, if recounted in detail, could fill a book or at least a long chapter or two in one…

One of my most memorable rides was on the 2002 Glidden in Daytona Beach.  On the ride home from St. Augustine it was a picture perfect postcard day with the top down on the Model A.  Linda, my wife, was next to me with Nathan, Marty Roth's three YO grandson, in the rumble seat, the Atlantic to my left and the warm ocean air in our faces made it just one of those rides to remember.  I lost Linda six years ago today so writing this now is both wonderful and difficult but it is still a good memory of a great life I have had in this wonderful hobby.

Back in the early seventies I was working in a foreign car repair place.  We had a fellow come in with a 1965 Cobra with a 289.  We put the clutch in and then the boss said we had to go test it.  We both thoroughly tested it out and found that it was working.  Some of my friends were saying that a 427 would have been more fun But I thought it was fine.  Very memorable.

Since I listed my most memorable ride,  there are many many others that could be 2nd.   First time I drove my GTO in HS was pretty cool.   Milk crate for seat,  no plates, registration, etc.   That seems like a bad idea in retrospect.

This one I happen to have on video,  was my first time driving a steam car.   Now I'm hooked.  Which gives something else to worry/think about.

Wow ! You drove a Ferrari in High School !?!

Now that must’ve been beyond cool.

Was it a 250 or 330 ?

To tell the truth, my most memorable car ride was when I street raced a 1967 Camaro in my 1968 Road Runner and avoided getting busted by three police cars full of cops. I should probably say no more about it....

Years ago I got a long drive in a unrestored 1911 Buick in NC.

The one that tops it though was last year at Amelia Island I was in the passenger seat of a Porsche 911 that was set to go fast up and down an airport runway. We hit 172 mph each way. My driver was Hurley Haywood! Boy, was that fun!

12 years old. Uncle’s friend had a real Torino Talladega.
from a dead stop, that car just launched. Honestly, and young boys that age tend to be stupid - it scared me badly.   Very memorable.

That was the inspiration for a movie …

  • 3 weeks later...

One ride that stands out as unique and interesting to me was the ride from the parking garage behind imperial Palace to the front parking lot of that casino back in 1985 in the backseat of a Tucker during the Tucker meet. sounded like a big corvair.

Driving from Richmond Hill to Burlington. Almost an hour each way. I had to fill up gas after the trip already started but he was cool and let the meter run while I did that. We listened to the Leafs game broadcast on TSN 1050 (AM!) and talked about computers and hockey almost the whole way. Friendly guy.

In a different life I wandered around India in 1970.  Ended up in Darjelling, which is a town at 6000 feet in the foothills of the Himalaya.  47 miles uphill on one of those roads you see touted as "world's most dangerous".  Coming back down was quite an adventure.  47 miles downhill in a 1960's Plymouth Sedan. The driver never once actually started the engine.  We drifted the whole way and the brakes were very marginal at best.

Just got back from yet another memorable "vintage" ride.

1056 miles (Riverside-Pebble Beach-Riverside) in one week and 10 hrs. Details coming in a day or two on "my" thread...
