  1. This KdF-Wagen key I found after 15 or so years of hunting for it in Europe. Lucky to get it as they are Incredibly scarce and never had a chance at another one. Around 1945 the key cut profile and tumblers were flipped over (like a mirror image) and stayed that way moving forward. From what I understand the power on dash switch, drivers door handle, trunk and engine lid handle were all keyed alike. Most KdF-wagen beetles that survived were updated to 1946 era tumblers and keys soon after.
  2. When I would go into a really old locksmith shop it was always fun to see all the old car blanks hanging up and try to figure out what make cars they were for just by the shape of them.
  3. Are some of these keys posted up here an aftermarket or an accessory key you could buy? I'm thinking so.
  4. Original KdF-Wagen Key. The First version. KdF-Wagen Beetles were built 1938-1944
  5. I may be biased but VW Keys sure looked cooler to me than other brands. Have any cool looking car keys? Post them up.
  6. Years ago I got a long drive in a unrestored 1911 Buick in NC. The one that tops it though was last year at Amelia Island I was in the passenger seat of a Porsche 911 that was set to go fast up and down an airport runway. We hit 172 mph each way. My driver was Hurley Haywood! Boy, was that fun!
  7. Like others have said here. If not for you, how about your friend. Imagine seeing your friends car starting to burn and you had your fire extinguisher at home in your garage?
  8. That must have felt horrible. Couldnt imagine. Sorry to hear that. Maybe others can learn from that terrible expierience you went through and prevent the same thing from happening to them one day.
  9. Schwimmers did come with a tool box that was really cool. At least most of them had it I believe. Here are some photos of a 1942 KdF tool book I have. Wish I had some of these tools! 😊 Maybe one day I'll find one for my collection.
  10. Maybe it was my friend Rich's Demo? That was back in the mid 80s and 90s. Was always fun to watch folks reaction, especially at a Non-VW event. My 44' and 47' beetles will fun to crankstart up at carshows for folks never having seen that done before. Gotta finish em first though.
  11. Does anybody remember the VW option (aftermarket) pulley, and rope with T handle? The pulley attached to the engine Pulley and you would be able to pull start the motor with the rope and T handle just like starting up an old lawn mover. My friend Rich had one and would do demonstrations of starting the car up this way on his 59 beetle at car shows.

  14. I remember seeing once a top US war hero soldier honored by having a US flag draped over the coffin that was placed sideways in the back of a WW2 Jeep. Fellow soldiers walked along both sides of the jeep as pallbearers.
  15. Not my first thought either, but the old Land Rovers are as indearing to the British as our WW2 Jeeps are to Americans. When I thought about it that way, plus knowing Prince Philip actually worked on Land Rovers as mechanic and loved them so much, I started to get it. He was a Car guy.
  16. Brian, looks like instead of "SWEET CAROLINE" maybe the Beach Boys hitg "I GET AROUND" might be more appropriate for you!
  17. Update: Ivan Dutton, the Buggatti restorer will be on the following week so that AutoLabs own Robert Erskine can cover a story LIVE from the UK about Prince Phillip's custom built hearse that Prince Philip designed himslf. Prince Philip as well as the Queen herself, were mechanics during the War, so Robert Erskine will be talking about that as well. I will share what I saw at the AACA Southeastern Spring Nationals in Charlotte last weekend. And of course, my friend (and mystery guest) will be on LIVE to share the amazing story of the famous Porsche 550 Spyder "container" find that he bought and now owns. Watch the show LIVE here on Facebook live: https://m.facebook.com/autolabradio Saturday morning 7am - 9am AM970 The show is archived each week and be seen later on at our website: www.theAutoLabShow.com
  18. Fire extinguishers are like Car Insurance. You should have it, but never want to have to use it.
