Besides the horror stories how do I find a good shipper.

Hello, I am new to this site and I am excited to get involved. I am considering making an offer on a Stanley Steamer that is on the East Coast and I need to get it shipped to the West Coast. I have spent a couple hours searching these forums and after reading the advice I am not looking to go the cheapest route. I agree with Click and Clack that it's the chintzy guy who pays the most. But I have no idea how to find a company that is well regarded. Are there particular one that are considered top notch and reputable. What ever the cost I can work that into my thinking on what I offer. As far as details it is late steamer that needs a restoration and it rolls. It is a sedan so I wouldn't have cloth tops to worry about.

Use one of the national big truck carriers. They're slow as hell and you'll pay a little extra but they don't make many mistakes.

There are good individual carriers but few of them go cross-country and it's hard to connect with them, so you're never quite sure who you're going to get. Do not use a broker or just call a company that sounds good and give them a credit card. 80% of the "shippers" are just middle men scraping off a few bucks and then subbing it out to the cheapest possible hauler to maximize their profit. The big names will get it done without incident.

I recently used David Phelps to move my Packard 1,000 miles. It was a good experience.  He took good care of it, kept in constant contact with me, and his fee was very fair.  I wouldn’t hesitate to use him again and refer friends to him.

Take out insurance on the car as soon as you buy it and before it's shipped.

I just used Passport to ship a high-value car and there were no issues. See Matt Harwood's advice above.

By the way, a Stanley sedan does have some sort of fabric on the roof -- full one-piece steel roofs did not come along until later.

Intercity Lines has been my go to for a long time, stellar reputation, can't go wrong. Reliable is my backup. Do not skimp on this, you get what you pay for. Could write horror stories for an hour...

Wow! She's a beauty! I've never seen a mountain wagon in person. They seem like fun considering all the seating.

To the original poster, there are people on the forums that transport themselves if you don't trust a company to do it. If you scroll down the forums homepage you'll find some of what you are looking for. People are constantly moving their cars around and often have extra space to carry other's cars too. I'd head down there and see if anyone is moving something sometime soon and has some extra space. I've known guys that have done this and practically got their car across the country for free. Nonetheless, make sure you insurances are both up to date no matter what, these cars are priceless... especially Stanely Steamers 😎

Check with your insurer, but most don’t cover a car during shipping.

That Stanley Steam Mountain Wagon was operated by my friend Grant on Orcas Island Washington as the only commercial tour operation in the world using a Stanley Mountain Wagon.

That picture was taken on July 4th weekend when I delivered it to the

new owner in California.

I got to go for a ride in it which was great !

Grant replaced that one with the

Stanley Mountain Wagon he bought from Pat Farrell.

Pat & Grant are good friends.

I have visited Pat’s collection and I have

visited Grant twice now and stayed a few

days on Orcas Island at his magnificent

home overlooking the Pacific Ocean

that he designed and built himself.

I have the best job !
