Raise your hand if you drove at least one old Buick this weekend

Our friend David Schultz invited us to bring a few cars to the Glenmoor Country Club this evening to help celebrate the club's 30th anniversary. People in the area may recall that this was the setting for the Glenmoor Gathering and Mr. Schultz was the guy behind that great event. Anyway, we loaded up the '41 Buick and the '56 Chrysler wagon and headed an hour south to Canton for the evening. There was entertainment, food, and a few other cars, including one that I'd never seen before. It was a nice evening and the big Buick thundered home in the dark without incident--it really seems to like driving at night, it feels stronger and smoother in the cool night air. A good final run before the end of the season.

Well this post is over eight years old now, and I often see it in my “not read list”. Always wanted a big 30’s Buick, was mostly Intrested in a 90 series. We ended up landing a 34 Series 56C for Phil, and after sitting 62 years we have it running and driving. Since I took it around the block, I can say yes, and raise my 🖐 and say I have driven a pre war Buick for the first time in over thirty five years. Fun car, and I expect we will bring it to the Miami AACA show in January next year.

Participated in the 2022 Revival AAA Glidden Tour last week.  Toured historic sites in and around Princeton, NJ.  On our own, upon completion of the day's scheduled activities, we stopped by President Grover Cleveland's house.

I'll post more pictures from the tour soon on my "Me and My Buick" thread...

Hi All,

Another fabulous Autumn day here in Australia. Labour Day holiday here on Monday so I had decided to take the Buick for a coffee run with my wife. We did the coffee run but it was such a great day we decided to go for a drive and ended up following the back roads route to the Hunter Valley, a major wine regions a couple of hours drive north of Sydney and 50 minutes from my home. 130 mile round trip for the day. Cheers Paul

Timing is everything!  ;)

I got that shot sort of by chance. Went to the Dollar General for a case of water and saw the light getting nice on my return trip. When I pulled in two guys from Missouri in a 1966 Volvo P1800 stopped by to chat, and then a local mural artist stopped by as well. By the time we were done chewing the fat the light was perfect, and I took the shot. Been with friends at their home in Corrales, NM since Friday. Getting back on the road today.

We've been there.  A neat art deco service station with gas, repair, and a restaurant all in on facility.  It is now the local welcome center.

An interesting note is that behind the building there is about a dozen Tesla charging stations.

We went to the welcome center but didn't hang around long enough for the cafe to open. Definitely a neat place. The mural artist mentioned the Tesla charging stations. It's my guess that there aren't enough of them along Route 66 to accommodate a trip like mine.

We had an interesting Buick day, or rather afternoon. Graham and I finally had the underside of the replacement hood cleaned and ready to paint. Then the adventures began! The regulator on my spray gun malfunctioned and but I thought it was the spray gun, so I grabbed another, and it didn't work right either. Finally I took the regulator off and presto, we have spray again, instead of dribbles! Good thing this was just primer (epoxy) or else the paint job would have been trashed.

I'm still on the fence as to how far to go, but I'm thinking of getting a quart of paint mixed to paint the quarters which are in primer so it looks more cohesive. When we do a complete we will take a lot of time to strip and fix all the little imperfections on the body, etc. So a biggish job that I'd like to leave till we get the engine sorted out.

After clean up and supper we decided to take the '55 out to fill it up. This time Graham did the deed! It is only the second time it has been to a gas station but we only put a partial tank in it last time. Here's a picture of Graham about to fill it up.

He is driving the car more as well which is good as these cars drive quite differently from modern ones. On that subject I'm more and more pleased with how this car is turning out. It drives smooth and quiet, no wind noise at 50- 55, we haven't had it past 60 indicated and the speedo seems to be just a few mph optimistic which is typical in my experience.  Only about a dozen miles on this one tonight.

With the dead cylinder it's pretty chuggy off of the line so we take it very accelerating, but it smooths out about 30 and cruises at 50 with just a crack of throttle, so we are looking forward to getting the engine fully sorted. Next year's project!

Then the Electra kind of needed a spin around the block and I decided to go far enough to get it to flip over 54,000 miles, so about 20 miles on the Big Girl tonight.

Weather has been fantastic around here, with daily highs between 25-27C the last few weeks (normal high temp for us this time of year is around 14C). Only problem?… all time high gas prices!  Both Buicks were close to empty so I bit the bullet and got the Electra out for a short sunset drive.

then of course the reckoning…. Filled up on my way home. That’s $2.689/liter for 94 octane. 😢

well worth the smiles per gallon!

It was unusually rainy in NM over the past week, but that isn't putting a damper on the trip. The real buzzkill is the cost of gasoline. My wife and I are debating whether to sell the Buick when we get back to finance the trip, or avoid going into CA so we can keep the car 🤔.

Prior to Hershey I spent a week getting the oil pump pressure spring dialed in.

DSC00677.JPG.c9dad550aadfae13b2670780f49bb07e.JPG

Getting loaded up for the flea market we could not get her out and about much.

After Hershey and the truck was unloaded we were able to get Beulah out for a 20 mile Sunday drive.

Oil pressure holding very steady around 25#. It is getting chilly so the top will soon go up.

On October 6th I took the Electra to visit my sister in lower NY state.  Linda and I grew up in this area and our parents are buried at area cemeteries, so I used this opportunity to visit their sites for the first time in several years. I'm sure no one would want to see the few photos I took that trip. But I did have a Buickful ride, and had a great time visting my sister and several friends who attended a service for Linda and then went to lunch with them all. The Queen ran nice for the 330 mile round trip, and got lots of compliments.

Then, yesterday I took the Super for a 140 mile ride to the southern Adirondacks. There is a lake I have wanted to see for several years now but I could not find the time to get there.  I did take some pictures on this trip and can share those with you.

On the way to my destination I passed Caroga Lake. This lake was a popular get away destination where Shermans Amusement park was opened in 1921.  It closed for good in 2010. Lately there has been a preservation effort to keep what little remains

20221011_124210.jpg20221011_124348.jpg20221011_124420.jpg

The lake itself is a beautiful spot

20221011_124147.jpg

But this was only one of the lakes I passed. This one is Canada Lake, which is itseld 128 acres on the surface. However it is attached to two other lakes for a combined total of 710 acres.

20221011_125128.jpg20221011_125209.jpg

I did not have time to drive all the way around it but may do so another time.

Along the route to my destination I stopped several times to take some pictures. It was a cool 44* morning

20221011_130400.jpg20221011_130442.jpg20221011_130550.jpg

Unfortunately the day before this trip it rained heavily in this region and it knocked down a lot of the leaves.  Still it was a beautiful ride in a virtually unused area.

20221011_130719.jpg20221011_130740.jpg20221011_131726.jpg20221011_131819.jpg20221011_132220.jpg

The road just winds its way northward.

20221011_132458.jpg

Till I finally arrived at my destination, Piseco Lake.  I have been interested in visting this particular lake because there is a local weather spotter there. A weather spotter is someone local who calls into the news program to offer weather related information at their site. Although the person calls in often they have never shared any photos so I just got a curious.

20221011_134132.jpg20221011_134335.jpg20221011_135106.jpg

This lake is 4.5 square miles of surface.  And the area is developed pretty well even though it is a few hours drive to anywhere.  Again, just a beautiful place it would be nice to have a cottage at.

After looping around the entire lake I went to the town of Speculator, NY, where another weather spotter always sends a report.

Here was found Lake Pleasant, 1425 acres with 9 miles of shore line wrapping around the perimeter.  I have to go back during the summer.

20221011_142455.jpg

But I had to head home.

20221011_143911.jpg

20221011_144226.jpg

Just follow the river south on Route 30 to Wells, NY where there is Lake Algonquin.  259 acres with a six mile shoreline.

20221011_145323 (2).jpg

20221011_145307.jpg

And further south another shot of the river

20221011_150019.jpg

20221011_150029.jpg20221011_150103.jpg

Rt 30 follows the river all the way to the Great Sacandaga lake, which should not be confused with the Sacandaga Lake back up north in Speculator.   on the north end of the Great Sacandaga Lake is the town of Northville, where the self described "oldest five and dime in the US" is located.

20221011_152225.jpg

Another trip required for a visit inside.

Then I went through the town of Edinburgh where there is a bridge over the great Sacandaga lake

20221011_153519.jpg

20221011_153545.jpg

The bridge was needed because the lake is 29 miles long.  This is a man made lake implemented for flood control of the Hudson River.

The Super lived up to its name.  It ran great, got nearly 16 miles per gallon, and gave me no trouble for the 5 hour excursion.

Thanks for sharing, John.  You sure had some quality 'Buick time' this week.  I usually don't venture much farther that the Old Forge/Inlet area of the Adirondacks since my wife has a cousin in Old Forge, but your trip has me thinking about a more extensive tour of the area.  I think it's past-peak up there now, so I'm going to put that on my 'mini-tour' to-do list for next year.  ;)

Yikes!  Gas has dropped $0.46/litre here in the last few days It’s crazy but apparently some refineries in the west coast have come back on line this week.  I feel stupid for filling up both cars last weekend, but I guess my crystal ball is on the fritz. Hopefully prices come down for you in Cali soon.

It was about the same when I was in eastern MA last weekend...  It's about $3.80 here in CNY.

Probably one of the last weekends for driving and the weather was beautiful. I brought the '41 Limited home last night because it was our sons' homecoming dance and our youngest, Riley, had asked for a ride in the limo to the dance. He was meeting his female friend at the dance, but we didn't make a big deal out of it. Our older son, Cody, hitched a ride with his buddies--he's too cool to hang out with his parents anymore. We did cause a bit of a stir pulling up amongst all the other kids and parents and yes, one or two modern limos. I think Riley was excited about it even though he was pretty apprehensive about the dance overall.

That giant kid is only 14 years old!

Then today, Sunday, we had the Ohio Region CCCA annual clambake. It was about 40 miles to the other side of town, so we picked a scenic non-highway route and took our time. Once again Riley joined us (he loves clams and Melanie and I hate them) and it was a gorgeous day for a drive. Good colors and the host's house was near the lake, so there was some great scenery. Plenty of cool Full Classics at the clambake, too:

Yesterday, I took my 1937 80C to the local Cape Fear Optimist Club's annual "Fillup the Outfield" show. The car was a hit. The crowd really likes that fact that I play 40's music (loud enough to hear but not loud enough to be obnoxious) on the original 1937 Buick Radio while parked.

We took the 55 Buick of my son's to a larger local show today, and annual event which is partnered with a local Fall Fair, called Pumpkinfest.

This is close to home as it's only about 10 miles each way so 20 miles or so total. I had just finished painting the quarter panels and then a buff on most of it which brought it up pretty well and helped to blend the difference between the old paint and new. The cars repainted sometime in the 80's or so we believe, as it's definitely not the original paint.

The turnout of cars was incredible nearly 1,600 I was told. So many beautiful cars of many makes and models, but I've pictured a few of the Buicks, of which there was quite a number in attendance.

I've also included a couple of pictures of a rare beastie, a 1954 Meteor glasstop. Rare when new. The Meteor was a Canada only models, a lower end car with but based on the Fords and Mercuries of the time. The more pedestrian model were quite popular in Canada and I had a couple of later model years in my early days.

I needed to work some on Saturday, and the Puget Sound's perfect Indian Summer continued for another glorious weekend. So, it was a further opportunity to enjoy Buick's Wildcat power.

The lighting conditions were not ideal for photographs, but the shape and style of these '65 Wildcats have made them  life-long favorites. I snapped a few photos near my office, then briefly visited Tacoma's former Woolworth store and Morton McCarver Middle School -- one of Tacoma's many great historic school buildings.

As I drove home, I switched the radio to the AM band, just in time to catch KIXI's "Beatles Backbeat". A featured song was the great 1965 hit, "Ticket to Ride". And it was the perfect soundtrack as the big Buick V8 hummed along Interstate 5.

Oh, and I still love the turbines on that car!

Thank you, EmTee!  I have now gathered a set of correct chrome-plated road wheels and center caps for the car, and a Riviera owner is after me to sell him the turbines.  I'm thinking that I will hang onto the turbines, though, because they really do "fit" the style of the car.  I'd like to be able to swap back-and-forth between the turbines and the road wheels.  (Wish I could afford two sets of tires to make it easier!)
