He spoke of a Miller Ford and the other I remember was one with a v8 Hisso airplane engine converted to 4 cylinders. Not sure which one this is. 1937hd45 Posted April 8, 2020 Share Posted April 8, 2020 The V-16 MILLER engine was removed from the Lockhart wreck and powered the Sampson 16 Special in the INDY 500 driven by Bob Swanson 1939 & 1940. A Woolf Posted April 9, 2020 Share Posted April 9, 2020 This is a great thread with lots of neat photos. To add to the fun here is a photo of 1913 American Underslung Type 32 roadster. This was the midsized car in the American lineup in 1913. It had 37 inch wheels and used a 30 Teetor Hartley engine for power. They shared a chassis with the Type 34 American Tourist. No roadsters still exist but there are several Tourists in existence. The building in the background is interesting. I have another photo of a new American that has that building in the background. According to Google there is park near the site of the American factory in Indianapolis that has a building called the Pagoda but it is not exactly like the building in the old photo. Here is a smattering of photographs that show their evolving tastes in early automobiles: A 1911 Ford, Then a 1912 Reo with unusual tire tread (obviously the family favourite- the "Gibson Girl" behind the wheel in more than a few images is David Sr.'s daughter Elsie) then a 1914 Packard. From a point of view of heraldry, nothing should be surmounting the national colors, albeit in black and white. Not failing to mention the Ebenezer Scroog looking chap surmounting the flag at left.
