Popular Post Rata Road
Some time back I noticed a post on here by someone looking for a 38 Dodge rim. He was in Europe and couldn't locate one anywhere. I thought that will be easy and somebody will sort that. A few weeks later I was scrolling through old posts and I noticed he didn't get one single reply? I contacted him to ask if he was sorted. He said nobody has responded at all, he had contacted auto wreckers in the USA with no luck. Issue is he cant get his restored car on the road as in his country a correct spare is a legal requirement. I said I should be able to find one easily here in New Zealand but the postage will be expensive. He said try your luck as I have to have one. Its winter here (no swap meets) so I called a friend who is a Dodge guy and he had an old neglected rim and tyre of the correct shape and size in his back shed for $40. I drove 5 yr return trip to pick it up, had to cut the old tyre off with a grinder, took it to another friends house were we water blasted it, wire brushed most of the crud and peeling paint off the front face. It came up like a brand new wheel. He then painted the front face with primer and then with black paint to protect it on its journey. My friend wanted nothing for doing it. He knew why I was doing it and said if everybody behaved like this the world would be a better place. I then found a box, used a heap of bubble wrap etc and got it ready for postage. The buyer has paid me for the rim and the postage and its currently waiting on the courier to collect it. I didnt charge him anything, not for my fuel, my time or for packaging but somehow I feel I got the better part of this deal. Kevin 46 5

John_S_in_Penna
Would we do what you just did? Definitely! That's an excellent example to follow. Helping fellow hobbyists is what makes the hobby strong.

8E45E
I've often found its a "pay it forward", Golden Rule thing. When you least expect it, a similar deed will come your way. Craig

Fordy
Yes I have done similar. I also do it with information, that is what makes this forum great - shared knowledge. Some "clubs" are reluctant to pass on info if you are not a financial member for some reason. There is stuff in my shed that someone needs to get or keep a car going and if its surplus to my needs its theirs. Some of this has cost me good money and I have covered many miles to get. My exception is on things I have restored to "as new" condition then I will charge a reasonable amount (mainly cost and no labor). I have had only one issue and that was an entire engine that needed to be sent to Scotland from Australia. I offered it at no cost to the guy and had it all packed up and freight organized at a very good rate (my brother in-law works in international freight). Motor was free and a "runner", but the guy refused to pay the freight, so it never left. I believe that car is still languishing for want of a motor and he is trying to sell it.
john hess
I have done similar and have also reaped the rewards of this 'paying forward in short order... it's not always about money... friendships and knowledge gained just interacting with people through the forums has more value to me than the $$$

dodge28
I said that 500 BC ago. This hobby is helping other members. I do that all the time. But it is unfortunate there are hyenas have infiltrated the club.

60FlatTop
Many expect a reward for things they do and never realize the greater reward in just being able to do the deed. 6
Paul Dobbin
A good story about a good guy, here Is another: On all my Great American Races I would self address stamped envelopes to me and write on the back in a red flare HELP, PLEASE SEND ME A COPY OF THAT PICTURE YOU JUST TOO OF CAR # 37. Inside with our Press Release/Story, Race information, Stickers & Sponsor coupons, I explained this way I'll have a picture for our Scapbook when we qet home. I do have a lot of great Scapbooks too! One year we were driving along on the Green River in front of the Palisades in Wyoming. When we got home there was a 16 X 20" printed on canvas, with note, "As Requested". People are great, Pay It Forward. Edited August 10, 2023 by Paul Dobbin re-position text (see edit history)
marcapra
As you were telling this story, I thought it was going to end like this. After I got the rim all wrapped up and ready for shipping, the guy in Europe said Never mind, I found one.
