  1. The reality being stated on property "dictating" how we involve ourselves in our hobby of old cars may well be off topic but is a very relevant factor. I "went rural" several years ago as city prices had me out of that market. What I got 50 miles out of town for half city pricing was double the size of anything "closer". The "closer" thing is relative - I still worked in the city but my commute time was around the same due to less traffic to get there as there was no "across town and all the traffic signals etc. Now I am not working except for tinkering with cars, and I would not even consider living elsewhere. I went from a single garage and carport to a 4-car garage with workshop space which I have since added to - this allowed me the room to get more old vehicles and indulge in my love for them. The hobby almost demands ample space to house the cars plus parts plus the pieces being worked on - Inner city or nowadays normal suburban housing is tiny and cramped - make a noise and the neighbour is at you for disturbing him, or someone else complains about the "unsightly wreck" in your yard. The post may have "gone stupid" in old car fan's opinion but the general discussion within remains relevant to the hobby. Steve
  2. Ahh - the litigious world we live in. I guess I will need to call the T Ford tanks I am doing for a pal "liquid storage vessels" - up to him the liquid he uses - "I have no control over that your honour". Steve
  3. Steering box lube is "semi fluid" so thick in consistency it pours like frozen treacle. Steve
  4. I was just wondering if there is anyone in South Australia who uses this forum who would have or know of a chassis up for grabs. I have several pallet loads of suspension, engine and transmission plus wheels. The local "men's shed" I go to is thinking of doing a project to build up a pickup or woodie and I have said they can have my hoard of parts but there is no frame to go with them to make a start. '27 to '29 would be ideal and if we can get a cowl and fenders even better still. Thanks Steve
  5. The big nut applies thrust to ball bearings above and below the worm gear. Sloppy steering is either a flogged-out worm or the peg that runs in it, so a complete teardown and inspection is probably warranted. Jeep used Ross and available parts from appropriate vendors may suit what you have or be adapted to fit, they may also have info available on repairs. Steve
  6. I have been doing Rochester in tank gauges and they fit Hupmobile, Franklin and Stirling-Knight. Not sure if the actual tanks are the same though. Steve
  7. I wasn't aware of a vote taking place. I would have been a yes Steve
  8. I have an Engish Ford Prefect -10hp taxable. Not sure what the actual figure is but at least 9 of those taxable ones are in pet food now.
  9. I think you have paid top dollar for it and looking at the photos it is worth considerably less in its current state. Cleaned up and running will boost things a bit but there will remain A LOT to do requiring time and more money by the bucketload. Steve
  10. I believe all series R used the same valves and retainer so there should be no problem finding what you need. I have some here in Australia but sending them over could be pricey - As Jeff has suggested there are at least 3 FB sites for Hupps, The Hupp Club, Australia & New Zealand Hupp Register and Hupmobile cars and parts for sale or wanted. Any one of them may yield a result closer to home. Steve
  11. I am definitely happy to find another make they fit. Currently mid-way through another 10 of these and doing a couple to suit the early Franklins that are similar but minus the tubing and reserve selection - much simpler also = cheaper so I will be "testing the water" with the first 2. Those ones have the Franklin script on the dial but I suspect they were also fitted to other makes. Currently corresponding with Bill regarding his needs. Steve
  12. No better reason - hang the expense and get him involved. Steve
  13. Conveyor belting has the weave only going in 2 directions throughout the thickness. I believe it is laid radially on the drive couplings. An alternative would be a modern polymer that I can't recall the name of - I used it for the tailshaft on a Hupp after I saw a demo were the bolts broke before the material even looked like it wanted to tear apart.
  14. There are DC-DC converters around fairly cheaply from hobby electronics retailers. I would be trying one of those. Steve
  15. Hupp utilized the same mounting method on Model R and A so probably on others as well. When I refitted the Radiator to my cars I used what we called "waffle pad" in the air-conditioning industry. It is rubber sheet available in various thicknesses to reduce vibrations transmitted from equipment into the building structure. Steve
  16. My initial thought is that it is way too sharply focused to have any age. Also, unless it has only just left the showroom the paint finishes also look "modern" - I believe it is probably a very recently snapped image. Steve
  17. When I reproduce a part for someone I "retain the right" to do more but don't charge a setup etc. Tooling up with the jigs and dies etc. can be an expensive exercise and some of the "sketches" I have had to work on were like kiddies crayon scrawls. I prefer to have an example on hand and reverse engineer what I am doing to match and make my own blueprints. I quoted one customer $150 to make a one-off piece that was no longer available using a pdf copy of one of the factory drawings - he thought that was too high when it was essentially materials cost and token labor charge. Some things I will do multiples of "just in case" - most of those I still have! Steve
  18. It sounds to me like there is a problem within the insulation of the windings. This is essentially varnish and I would bet it is breaking down with the heat of the motor. Not exactly causing a short but reducing dielectric strength of the varnish. This is also made worse by any gunk that may be in there too. Only sure fix if that is the case would be a full rewind of both the fields and armature. Steve
  19. Wow. Talk about a complicated system with different requirements across all the states. Sitting on the outside it makes me wonder when you will need a "title" so prove you can legitimately sell a chocolate bar to someone and you didn't just nick it off some kid down the street. It is obviously working on the assumption that if you can not prove legal ownership then you must have stolen it. Steve
  20. I suppose we should just all feel gratitude that we have a nice squeaky clean sanitized forum where any dissent gets suppressed or kicked to the side? The crux of the matter revolves around entire threads disappearing without notice or a justification being given. This is an injustice to everyone who made a comment - good or bad - and says, "your opinion is worthless" (in the eyes of the moderator who removes the thread). Do we really want this nanny state to continue? There should be more howls of protest over this happening. The moderators are not gods empowered to impose their will or morals on the rest of us at their discretion. Questioning what I (and others) see as a badly made decision(s) should be a matter of course and I for one believe they (moderators) need to be more "in tune" with what we the users are asking for. I repeat that more people need to protest poor decisions being made that sanitize discussions and nip it off when discussions wander off topic into "conversation" which is the root of friendships that get formed via the forum. Silence merely reinforces any "smugness" they already have. They can do what is being asked but it is pure stubbornness and an abuse of powers making them "dig in" and resist change. Steve
  21. HMM something not quite right here...? They say it can NOT be done - that is removing individual posts that they deem "offensive" or otherwise unwelcome and leave the bulk of it remaining. If it can NOT be done, then how has the content of this thread altered noticeably since I last checked in? Methinks I smell a rat. It obviously can be done, so they need to take on board the advice that has been given - "PLEASE STOP DELETING ENTIRE POSTS!" If only the energy spent arguing the point to us "dissenters" was spent constructively carrying out this simple request. Despite using the complexities of the forum software as a smokescreen as to why it cannot be done - miracle of miracles - IT HAS BEEN DONE! What will be the next excuse when a whole thread goes away? Steve
  22. Can someone explain to a hick living down under this whole title thing? I can buy a car from anywhere without any documentation and get it registered in my name by presenting it for an "identity check" where the numbers are run on a national database for its status as "stolen" or whatever. I would have thought you US guys would have similar. Steve
