  1. John was the first friend I made when I bought my first old car in about 1978, a 50 Chrysler. He was then president of the San Diego branch of the WPC club. I think it was my second or third meeting, while I went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee and a cookie, John nominated me, and the club approved me, as the new president! Marc Capralis
  2. I have the D-24 Parts book, and the rear glass for the club coupe only fits the club coupe. None of the other bodies will fit it, including the business coupe. The part number is 901818. I also have an S-11 Parts List for DeSoto and the Club Coupe rear window is the same as for the Dodge club coupe. It's probably the same for a Chrysler 6 also from 46-48.
  3. If you are selling a car, you need to have more pics showing the engine compartment, the dash, the upholstery, etc. and tell what has been done to the car. Such as engine has been bored at .030 with .030 over-size pistions and rings installed five years ago, crank and camshaft were ground with undersize bearings installed. Etc. A good video without the corny background music showing a tour of the car, showing it start and run, showing it running from inside and outside the car, etc.
  4. For very old cars, a Darraq and a Spyker, I like the British film from 1953, Genevieve. And for a fun bootleg chase there's 43 The Petty Story. The first 12 mins. show a bootleg chase with a 46 Plymouth being chased by a 46 Chrysler Windsor business coupe.
  5. You might have a devil of a time trying to undo the pipe plug that drains the differential! On my 48 DeSoto, it is a female square plug that is the very odd size of 5/16's. I had to special order a 5/16 male square end wrench, and it was no help. Why? Because someone in the distant past had tried to unscrew it and now the female square is rounded out!

  7. My mom bought a brand new Chevrolet Impala station wagon in 1965, so it was the car I learned to drive in. At the time, I just considered it a big hunk of metal and rubber that got me and my girl and my surfboard to the beach and back.
  8. I just called my local auto paint jobber and got a clerk who really knows his auto paint. In Calif. they don't sell the old acrylic enamel anymore. He said most new cars and new car repairs are painted with the new water based paint. But you can still buy solvent based paint and urethanes. The solvent that is used is a blend of acetone and PCBTF. They still sell the isocyanate catalyst for this paint, which is required. I asked doesn't the isocyanate hardener violate the Calif. VOC laws. He said no. Isocyanates if used improperly will kill you, but not the trees, and that's fine with Calif. So they recommend an air supplied mask to use it. Also they still sell epoxy primers. they also sell the old lacquer primers. If you don't know what PCBTF is, here is part of an article on it from the Internet. PCBTF — also known as Oxsol 100, Parachlorobenzotrifluoride and p-Chloro-a,a,a-trifluorotoluene — is the most widely used solvent in the coatings and adhesives industry. PCBTF is used in field applied architectural and industrial Maintenance (AIM) coatings; marine coatings; auto-refinish coatings; factory-applied metal, plastic, and wood coatings; and in adhesives and consumer products, including paint thinners. The extensive use of PCBTF in industry products is largely because, in 1994, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted PCBTF from its list of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In addition, PCBTF has more favorable characteristics than other exempt compounds, for example it evaporates slower and has a higher flash point and therefore is less flammable than exempt VOCs including acetone.

  10. I was just told by a friend that he thinks acrylic enamel auto paint is no longer sold in Calif. He said he thinks it's all water based clear coat, base coat paint. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  12. I'm putting my 48 DeSoto together right now and have hit a bit of a roadblock. I installed a new Master Cylinder and the pedals, but can't find those little parts that connect the pedal to the MC. I am missing the End bolt that comes out of the MC with an eye or hold that a clevis pin goes through. And I'm missing the spring clip that you hook the brake pedal return spring to. These are the kind of parts that vendors don't carry and I think the only place to get them is off of a parts car. It doesn't have to be a DeSoto or the same year either. Do you know if your parts car might have these parts and if they are for sale?

  14. Wow! There are some incredible answers here! I didn't know any of that. I was refering to a car I saw in the Tad Burness book The American Car Spotter's Guide 1920-1939. The Peerless Motor Car Company of Cleveland,Ohio (1900-1932) went to hydraulic brakes in 1925 and strangely reverted back to mechanical brakes for their last two years in business, 1931-32. Why, I don't know.
  15. Many cars went from mechanical brakes to hydraulic brakes by the 1930s. Did any automobile company do the reverse and drop hydraulic brakes in favor of mechanical brakes?

  18. I am trying to attach my brake and clutch springs on my 48 DeSoto. I am missing the End bolt and the clevis pin. Anyone know where to get these parts?

  20. I looked up TDH fluid from Sunoco. It is cheaper, but the shipping is $42! The shipping from Zoro is free if you buy 3 or more gallons for the Mobil 1 iso 32, or just $5 for two gallons. Or I can buy it at my local (30 mile drive) Grainger store. Do you know what the capacity of a fluid drive coupling is? Is it closer to one, two, or three gallons?

  22. I have a lot of these manuals and none of them say that the fluid drive takes the same oil as the transmission. The semi automatic transmission says fill with 10w oil only, and the Fluid Drive unit takes MoPar Fluid Drive Fluid. Why would Mopar make a different fluid for the FD if it took the same oil as the transmission?

  24. Isn't the 10 W oil for the transmission and not the FD? I just talked to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and they said they sold a house brand Hydraulic Fluid that is ISO AW 32. I wonder if that's the same as Mobil's ISO VG 32? I wonder what the capacity of a FD unit is. Would one gallon fill it? I read some research on Fluid Drive units and it said the fluid should be changed about every 7 years. So I should replace mine. I read that the closest thing to the original fluid is Mobil's DTE Hydraulic Oil ISO VG 32. It's available online in one gallon containers for about $34. Also O'Reilly's sells their own hydraulic oil that is ISO AW 32.   25. I have been advised on another site that the burnt fluid smell is due to overheating. He said that overheated ATF smells like burnt rubber. I wonder how the fluid in a Fluid Drive gets overheated? He recommended that I change the fluid in the fluid drive unit. Does anyone know what is the recommended fluid these days for Fluid Drive fluid, since the Mopar fluid for this is long gone? I heard many people say they put 10W oil in the fluid drive, but sometimes I think they are calling their semi-auto transmission the fluid drive, which does take 10W oil. Concerning the 1000 miles check on fluid drive fluid level, it still seems strange, since I've never seen a fluid drive leak a drop of oil.
