It indeed appears to be that, but the shadow it casts on FDR's shoulder seems to indicate that the object may be something else, or at least not being worn as a collar by another person. Note that there appears to be something like a cord attached to it leading to the center of the windshield frame. Perhaps the military in WW2 hung rank insignia from their rear view mirrors, inspiring the post war fuzzy dice craze.

Looks to me a two star general, ,maybe Air Force, is sitting close behind FDR wearing a helmet. The uniform collar is aligned with the rear view mirror and you can see a uniform patch on the left soldier shoulder. Everyone is looking to the sky, perhaps a military air display. The only thing I can’t pick out is the no filter? Cigarette brand!

Curious, what is located at the top center of the windshield?  Could that be a windshield mounted antenna on a convertible?

 Yes. I believe all '40='53 had the antenna there. AND that is a Super, not a Special.  1951, looks like to me.

I was there the day Jackie Gleason toured the Linden, NJ B-O-P (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) assembly plant on US-1. My Dad, a Linden Firefighter, had been assigned as driver for Fire Chief Miller. He and Mayor Hurst greeted Gleason at the plant. Chief Miller, knowing I was born a "Car-Nut", invited Dad to bring me along. There were several photo-ops throughout the plant all during that day, and somewhere I have the newspaper article detailing the event.

 

When much younger, I used to hang on the plant fence to see the new cars rolling out of the plant. Many years later (fall/winter 1968-1969) while working for IBM in mid-town Manhattan during the day, I also worked nights for Anchor Motor Freight, driving new cars off the assembly line (the gate), into the receiving lot at the plant. Later in the shift we drove groups of cars from the plant lot around the complex, across US-1, and to another lot behind Linden Airport to be loaded onto the transport 18-wheelers, hopefully not running out of gas along the way. Some drivers took shelter from the frigid nights by sitting in the cars with engines and heaters running until the transport van would come to pick us up for the return trip to the plant.

Jackie Gleason In Visit To Linden GM Division

 

 

Jackie Gleason, who will be the star of the Buick Motor Division’s television show starting in October, and his manager Mr. “Bullets Durgen”, visits with employees of the General Motors assembly plant in Linden, last week and met hundreds of the employees who are currently producing automobiles in record numbers.

 

Mr. Gleason was very much interested in how Buicks were built and was photo-graphed numerous times as he observed first-hand the cars being assembled.

 

The employees answered his many ques-tions as he toured one end of the plant to the other. On several occasions, Jackie took over a tool from one of the men and tried his hand at actual manufacturing.

 

Miss Barbara Proudfoot, of the Accounting Department, who had her picture taken with Jackie remarked, “He is really quite shy and quiet off the TV stage.”

 

Company officials including Marshall H. Boden, Manager; E.T. Azar, personnel director; Carl W. Dobos, production

manager, and H.T. Anderson, resident comptroller, escorted Mr. Gleason

through the plant.

 

The plant tour was preceded by a luncheon where Mr. Gleason was informed that the Linden plant’s present employment figure is 5,336. The payroll for the plant for the year 1954 amounted to $23,316,718.

 

The Linden plant’s production for the month of April was 790 cars, which was a record month in the history of the Linden plant which dates back to March, 1937.

 

Other guests included Frank Hartung of the Kudner Advertising Agency of New York, which handles the Buick account,

and A.V. O’Keefe of the General Motors public relations department, in New York.

 

Following the Linden visit, Mr. Gleason drove his new Buick convertible to the G.M. Training center at Union, where he was greeted by Ray Fisher, manager, and shown the facilities there that are used by the dealer groups throughout  New Jersey for training purposes.
