Automotive weird-ness

Amphicar BUYER

Recommended Posts

As you know I love Amphicars. Why? Because they are strange and have a unique" talent". I have always had a passion for the out of ordinary especially cars. My dream car is the Ford Skyliner for it's retractable roof. Another dream car is the 1949 Taylor Aerocar. I finally got to speak with the man who owns 1 of the 4 surviving and the only regularly flying Aerocar left. As luck would have it, he lives here in Colorado and one other Aerocar lives here too. He is rebuilding the engine and soon it will be runnnig again. This is the last one built and the one Bob Cummings owned and was used in his TV show.

He said he'd be happy to trade rides between one car with 2 propellors and another with a single propellor! I can't wait!!!!

What other weird automotive ideas can you recall? Accessories and vehicles. I remember an automatic cigarette dispensor that would hand you a lighted cigarette from a dash mounted box.

This is Ed's Aerocar....

I always thought the clock mounted in the center of the steering wheel hub of the 57 DeSoto was cool........

or the retracting rear window in the 57 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, which also had a flat-topped steer wheel for better visibility......

John, wheres the prop. on that puppy?? With ref. to your retractable, the owner of a foundry here in Binghamton ny bought one brand new. Put the top down and had a heck of a time getting it back up. He got so angry when he finely did get it up he drove the car inside the foundry, never covered it and just let it sit near 40 years. Sold the foundry and sent the ford to the junk man. Car had less that a thousand miles on it. dick

The prop on the Aerocar is at the end of the fuselage. It's a pusher type. The door is steel on the Aerocar.

I saw a '57 Skyliner in Tooele, UT in the early 80s with the top half up. I stopped in to inquire about it. He had the same problem, got mad and left it as is from 1958 until I saw it. As I recall it has only a few thousand on the clock. Probably there until he died by the way he was still mad when I spoke with him.

how about the record players for cars they sold in the 50's, you couldn't play anything unless you were stationary.

Or the steering wheel of the Allegro (BMC car). It was a rectangle with the corners rounded off..

I am sure there is more, just cant think of them at the moment

Hi there,

This is my first encounter with AACA forum, been an AACA member since about 1964. One thing Ihave to say is there's an awful lot of mis-information on here in general. Fro example in this forum there'sa comment about cr record palyers that only played when the car was stopped. I was car-savvy at the tiem and just because I never heard of one doesn't mean it didn't exist....but I recall and now own TWO original Mopar Hi-Way Hi-Fi record players. The play 16 2/3 rpm ( half of 33 rpm 7" records and they play just as weel driving as staying still. When encountering a big pothole they will sometimes skip, just like a CD player does in a modern car.

On the subject of the automatic cigarette lighter that dispenses a lit cigarette on damand, I own several including two new inthe box with directions. Glad to send a copy of directions, give my your mail address. Plugged into lighter, you load 20 cigarettes into the hopper and when you wnt a fresh-lit one, you push a button and a few seconds later it's ready.

I don't recall the clock in the steering wheel on a 57 Desoto, but I do have a clock from a 50 or 51 Olds as such. I believe several makes had them in the early '50's, by 57 I don't think they were offered any longer. anyone have any informaiton ??

By the way, I use my real name here, everywhere, and even when I meet people in person. I use dto introduce myself as "battleship_succotash_885764.34" but when giving out autographesd photos the signature took too long.

I don't have a picture of how it appears now, but somebody has motorized

one of the Rocket ride cars from the long defunct Euclid Beach park here outside

of Cleveland. Last summer, I seen this thing ride up and down the street

with a full load of passengers (minus the suspension cables!)

Thanks,

Joe

That would be my off hand remark, yes they worked, while the car was going, just not all that great, unless of course your road was boulevard smooth, but dont take things too seriously, it was an off hand remark..

Mis-information is for village idiots. Check your facts thoroughly before you utter word one.

I've seen at least three '56-'58 DeSotos with the clock in the steering hub.

And if you think the Turnpike Cruisers are full of their share of oddities,

check out this little piece of Merc-work.

Back in '06 there seemed to be some carryover from the CB radio days and people signed on with a "handle". I did, eventually, manage to get my name and location in my signature. But this is car stuff and no need to work in the shadows.

However, in another area I go by Owen Cornelius Dalton We will be incorporating under the name of The OCD Group once I get the paperwork organized.

Bernie... err.... Owen

Even in the dark daze before the Internet I've always been just "Padgett" except when additional characters were required. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Group ? Have been known to resemble that remark.

BTW one of the oddities of the internet is that in many places a question will languish like an orphan but propose an answer and people will come out of the woodwork to prove you rong - and some may even be rite.

ps back in CB days I used the handle "Water Buffalo" but that was for the bike I was riding.

They were offered on 1955 DeSotos for sure, and it was made by Benrus.

I no longer find them 'out of the ordinary' with their resurgence in popularity; especially the number of European manufacturers now offering them.

The '57 Ford is somewhat 'archaic' as nearly all the new offerings allow the trunklid to be opened in a regular fashion for loading and unloading of goods, which explains their appeal now. One no longer has to load/unload them from the sides.

As a side note, I had to correct the curator/tour guide at the Lemay Family Museum in Washington. He tried to tell us the '57-'59 Skyliner was 'Ford's only retractable hardtop'. I reminded him Ford offered an Escort in Europe and Australia from 2006-2011 as a retractable. (Escort C-C)

Say, How many noticed that this post is over 10 years old according to post #1. Dandy Dave!

Good eye, Dandy Dave, I for one didn't notice the misplaced decade. Well, for me, that misplaced decade was the 1960s, but that's a hole 'nuther story. Anyway, it looks like all of the posts through Post #14 have lost a decade somewhere along the line. Could this be some sort of a computer glitch, or is the "Mother Ship" lurking nearby? Of course we can see that the Original Poster is from "Northern Colorado" which is only some 500 air miles from Roswell, New Mexico:rolleyes:. Need I say more:P?

Cheers in 2017(?),

Keiser 31,

Where and when did you see that thing? To your knowledge, is it still on the road? My initial impression was that it's one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, but then the workmanship looks pretty good. Even though perhaps misguided, that took a lot of talent and $weat to do.

Cheers,
