1941 Buick Eight Special serie 40 type 46S

Recommended Posts

Hello, as presented in the subject of my Electra 1969, my parents bought this weekend a very beautiful 1941 Buick Eight Special series 40 Types 46S, with its 8 cylinders in lines, 3-speed manual gearbox  .
This Buick belongs to a private collection/museum of two brothers in the north of France.
The paint had been redone some time ago and is in good condition.
The brakes, the exhaust line and various parts are new.
I love this Buick

Then we went to show it to friends and we came back from nights, when we did not yet know the car.
And that went very well :) !
It's the first time I've driven a car of this age, and it's the first time I've shifted gears with the steering wheel, and you learn quickly and everything went well .
The gear changes are very good, the driving is superb.
We loved it, it's a real time travel  .
The car is very well equipped / optional compared to European cars.
We love this Buick and we want to drive all the time, but parents are very happy and so are I .

Félicitations, Sebastien!  What a great purchase by your parents!  When I saw your post on the Electra 1969 thread, I was hoping you would start a thread on this car.  It looks fantastic.  I can only imagine what it must be like to motor through France in this vehicle.

As you can see, I also have a '41 so please feel free to reach out if there's anything I might be able to help with on this car.  The only thing I see from the photos that looks a bit odd is the position of the clutch pedal.  But if the car is running and driving well, I'm sure it's just a matter of adjustment.  I hope you and your parents enjoy this car for many years to come.  I look forward to following this thread.  I can't help but wonder: is the '41 going to get the same meticulous treatment that you have given to the '69?

Hello and thank you :) .
And thank you for your suggestion for your help ;)
My parents are very happy and we want to drive the Buick all the time :)
My parents have had the Buick since Saturday, and so far we haven't had time to look for the clutch pedal, I'll look at it on a weeknight or this weekend :)
The Buick is in good condition but there are some small jobs to do that my parents want to do :)
And I'll be there to work on the Buick :)
The jobs that my parents will do are:
- Redo chrome the front and rear bumpers (the previous owner had sandblasted and painted the bumpers, and he did not chrome them as original).
Redo the chrome plating of the headlights at the front and put the new glasses of the pilot light and the new rear headlights
- Redo the floor carpet inside, and the door panels (they are in good condition, they will see as you go)
- redo the steering wheel which is damaged
- do an engine oil change
- change the gasket of the gearbox housing which is leaking a little
- can be change the clutch
- .....
They want them to be in good condition and original :)

Hello, my parents want to change the engine oil on the 1941 Buick, and I would like to know which oil filter should I buy for this engine.
I saw on my forum that someone talk about the Napa FIL 1001 filter.
Do you know if this is the one I should buy ?
And where can I order it ?
Thanks :)

Order it from NAPA. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1001

Best of luck with this beautiful Buick. The first thing that I would buy for my car would be Shop Manual for the "41 Buick. There are reproductions available and the manual has a wealth of information and the cost (about $25 USD) is well worth it.

If the oil filter was either factory installed or done by the dealer, then the NAPA FIL 1001 would be correct.  But sometimes the filters were added by the local mechanic and may  have been an after market brand.  Case in point, my 1942 Buick has an Allstate oil filter added.   Thanks   Jim

I'm sure the oil filter is not original.

I'm not sure why you say that.  It looks original to me, and is labeled "AC Kleer Kleen," which was original equipment on the '41s.  That's what my '41 Super has.

If you are talking about the metal container then yes it appears original. The filter contained within probably not.

So the right oil filter is the Napa FIL 1001 , and I can order this filter now :) .

Do you know how much oil to put in ?

Probably from 5-7 qts to fill the system.  I would start with filling the filter canister after the new filter is installed. Put on the cap. Put 4 1/2 qts in the oil filler. Start it allowing oil pressure to build. Turn it off and check the oil dipstick. Top off as necessary.  Don't be surprised if it takes 7 qts.  My 54 nailhead takes 7 qts. The straight 8 may as well.

thank you very much for all this information :) .
I have just tried to order the oil filter on the "NAPA" site https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1001

, but I cannot buy in France on this site :( .
In the "region" categories for delivery, there is no France.
There are only regions in America.
Do you know of another website where I can order this filter ?
thank you :)

I guess all the other members do not realise that we are in Europe and NAPA does not excist here .Buy oil from Napa ??Buy oil in the US ?? are you crazy ?  No , i use regular 20-50 oil in my US cars , of course no syntetic oil .How much oil ? fill it up to upper mark of the dipstick , let it run and fill up again to upper mark .Oil filter , that you can order in the US if you don't find it here .But no problem , so many cars drive without oil filter , my cad -1950 has no oil filter since new , citroen traction avant in France never had oil filter .I would take it out look for the number and brand , clean the housing and inside and out put it back and go on internet to look for one .

Sebastian, I found similar issues where some suppliers would not post to Australia. Ended setting up a US Postal address through a couple of US based companies who then redirect your parcel for a modest fee. Often suppliers will free post in the States, so you only pay the overseas shipping. Shipito is one such company I have used.

cheers Rodney 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Thank you, for the oil I was also thinking of buying 20W50, and for the quantity of oil, it is to know if there is enough with a 5L container.
But I have been answered for this question.
I also bought the oil drain plug gasket.
I only miss the oil filter, and that's why I asked where I can find it :)

Thank you very much for this information :)
That might be the solution if I can't do otherwise :) .

I also have another question, I wanted to buy 8 spark plugs for the Buick but I couldn't find it on Rockauto.
Do you know which candle is needed and where can I order the candles?
I'll look at the spark plug models on the car this weekend if I can't find it.
Thanks :)

Either Bob's or CARS (oldbuickparts.com) should have the spark plugs.  I believe they are AC part number R45.

Don, are you referring to the non-resistor version (i.e., "45" vs. "R45")?

Must be NOS? I'm pretty sure the plain 45 is discontinued.

Thank you for your answers, but if the SP45R spark plugs on the internet links that I put are the right ones, I will order these :)

I strongly suggest that you contact this vendor before you place an order to make sure your items are in stock, and ask when they will ship. Unless their business practices have changed in the past few months you will get an e-mail confirmation of your order and your payment will be processed, but you will receive no further correspondence regarding when your item ships, if it ships. On two of the four orders I placed with them, the parts were out of stock and on backorder, yet I was not notified. I didn't find out until I called them after more than a week went by without receiving the parts or getting a shipment confirmation. I had no problem getting refunds, but I didn't care for the lack of communication.
