Kosage Chavis
Not much has happened over the last week and a half. Final trimout of the electrical work was completed. Still waiting on the power company to run their line to the meter. Also, started moving things into the new garage...which means finally saying goodbye to the good old carport. It served it's purpose and I am glad that I had it, but I am not sad to see it go. 8
Kosage Chavis
Chavis workshop is finally open for business! Dominion Power finally showed up. Bout damn time.Next order of business is to organize this mess, remove my old work bench from the other garage and then build another for this one. 9
EmTee
Lookin' good Kosage! So, did the utility company or city make you run a dedicated service to the garage as opposed to adding a sub-panel from the house, or was the house service maxed-out?

Our house service is maxed out. Either way, I think we would have went with the option of the garage having it's own service anyway. 6
Kosage Chavis
Over the weekend, I cleaned and organized the new garage as best I could. I can't really work in here like I want to until I have a work bench. So, that's what I started to work on. Removed the old work bench from the other garage. Then, started putting together the structural part of the new work bench. I don't have a table saw and I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to buy one. So, I made one with a regular circular saw and scrap wood! All I need to do now is make a decent fence for it and I can finish one of my work benches.

JoelsBuicks
That’s looking good and I think very highly of your disciplined approach to get an organized workplace before you get knee-deep into a project. I need to take a lesson from this myself. Thanks again for sharing it with us! Joel 4
Kosage Chavis
Build the fence for the table saw today. @JFranklin, also made a pair of these to keep my fingers away from the blade.Out of all of the tools I have ever operated, the table saw is what I fear most. Got to respect it. I cut my first piece with no issue. Went ahead and cut a few more pieces for the bottom portion of my work bench. The cuts look good. Now, to finish this work bench this weekend!
EmTee
That big table is certainly nice! You would have had to spend thousands to get a real table saw with half that work area. Nice work!

Kosage Chavis
Phase 1 of the work bench is done. This is my stationary work bench. I still need to put my vice onto it.I will also add a fold-down portion on the end to extend my work space if needed. It will also allow for more floor space when I need that more. On the other side of the garage, I will build another work bench with a fold-up portion. I want this work bench to be multifaceted. The idea is when needed and both folding portions are in place on both work benches, I will have work bench space along the entire length of the backside of the garage. The other work bench will be a roller that can also fold down entirely on the wall. In the meantime, I need to build a set of small shelves to hold both bumpers from my Buick. That way, I can finally move both Buicks in the shop.

EmTee
I see you have multiple outlets at the bench - that's a good thing! I'd also suggest that you consider anchoring the bench top with a couple of lag bolts into the studs. You 'll be glad when hack-sawing or leaning hard on that stuck bumper bracket bolt (or whatever) clamped in the vise. I already took care of this. 3 at the top and 3 at the bottom.

Kosage Chavis
We now have clearance to the new garage. Here's a before picture showing the tree next to the car. Here's an after picture with the tree removed. The 3 wooden panels were laid against the garage door to protect it from the stomp grinding.
MrEarl
What kind of tree was it? Did you get a piece of it for say possibly an anvil stand?

It was a green oak. I didn't keep anything. The tree was rotting out from the middle really badly.

Kosage Chavis
I don't know, but it's growing on me. The body seems like it belongs there with the garage in the background. Makes it look like a car shop from a tv show. If the kids were out of the house, I'd probably keep it. 2

EmTee
OK, now I'm jealous! Next, you need to have an 8x10 picture of yourself done-up in a nice frame. Place it on the fireplace mantle, coffee table, or other appropriate spot in the house so that your wife and kids will remember what you look like... EmTee
Yeah, I did notice that later... So, when are you adding A/C to your new garage?
Kosage Chavis
@EmTee, I would love to add some AC, but I have no idea when I could do something like that. The priority right now is to make the garage as functional as possible. I want to add a car lift and a small homeade elevator (don't laugh). EmTee
Agree - adding a lift is certainly higher priority (after a refrigerator, of course...).

Kosage Chavis
A small update to the garage. Lighting is one of a few things that needs improvement. Exterior lighting would be easiest. So, I did that first. Ran wire and boxes. Also switched out a single switch for a double to operate lights at both doors independently.Lights are now functional and they even look nice for the main garage door.I also switched to a matching light at the smaller garage door. That is all for now. 5

Barney Eaton
I purchased a window heat pump from Walmart (online) did not want to obstruct a window,so cut a hole in the wall. Think it is about 17,000 btu and it does a good job of both heating and cooling. Dont recall the price but it was maybe $600 Neighbor did a inside/outside unit because he has more sq ft I am only HVAC part of my shop, about 750 sq ft Edited October 20, 2021 by Barney Eaton (see edit history)
