Mark Shaw
JD, If you decide to head south to go back via the Columbia River Gorge, feel free to stop by on your way. I am just 11 miles North of the river.

JohnD1956
@Machine Gun partly, but I don't have a route planned just yet. I do need to stop in Illinois to pick up some parts so undoubtedly I will ride some of the same roads. Meanwhile, for yesterday, the 16th. The ride to Dan's was long and hot, but full of sights. We started with breakfast at the Broadway Diner, which is in a convenience mart 3 exits west of the host hotel. It was approximately 61° Then it was road time through the fields about 80 miles to the Coulee Dam. Truly impressive! To think this was completed in the 30's and within such a short time span means it is just short of a miracle.
JohnD1956
From there we traveled along the old Columbia River bed to the Dry Water Falls. Here are a few scenes along the way. And here are some scenes from the Dry Waterfalls site itself. By 10:30 it was already getting hot outside.
JohnD1956
It was clearly in the upper 80"s and Annie was running great albeit a bit higher on the temp guage. We pressed on through the desert like area. On one long uphill climb, even with the heater on high speed the car pegged the gauge, only to immediately cool back to 180 ish on the other side. We took several roads to wind up on Rt12 headed for White Pass. No pictures on this section as it was enough to concentrate on the drive and to watch the temp gauge. But here we caught a bit of a break since the ambient temp began to drop significantly. Annie climbed to the peak without complaint and I actually passed Dan near the summit as I didnt want to lose momentum. On the downhill side we stopped to get these shots of Mt. Rainer. The pictures do it no justice. By the time we fully decended on the western side of White Pass the temp gauge was back in the 160° range.
JohnD1956
It was mostly a flat run and a bit over 100 miles to Dans arriving roughly 7:30 pm. All together we topped the tanks 3 times and did 503 miles. Gonna be here a few days before moving on.

JohnD1956
Today Dan and I went 86 miles to Ocean Beach Washington, where I dipped my feet into the Pacific Ocean . It was warmer than I expected but foggy just like I remembered from Lincoln City in 2014. From the ocean you could hardly see the car And I noticed some of the chipps were forming rust. So a picture, or a few, and we were on our way back. I almost got it stuck on the beach. Thankfully I was able to back it out on to the wet and hard packed sand. Pi Many thanks to Dan and his beautiful wife Vicky, not to forget pups Kelly and Casey, for hosting me since Sunday at their fablous place. Tomorrow I am off to Portland

JohnD1956
Left Dan's paradise around 9:30. Today will be a short trip relatively speaking. Going to visit my cousin in Portland OR for the overnight. Just running on US 5 to Portland. Not to sceanic yet and lots of trucks and traffic.
JohnD1956
Left my Cousin's place earlyvtrying to beat the heat. I did want to go to multnomah falls but apparently I had to reserve a spot two weeks ago. Oh well I did want to beat the heat. Took one of the bypasses for the falls. I think one could spend a whole week on just this 7 mile bypass. More later. I just stopped for lunch in Pendleton. Dead mans hill is 17 miles ahead and its 3800 ft. Everything has been good so far. Gonna try to clean my coolant filter before hitting that hill.

JohnD1956
Thanks @Fast-T. Today was a bit of a devil. It got warm early and my cousin warned me that Rt84 was an up hill climb. The Buick reacted to the heat and the climb. It never boiled over. In fact, it really didn't overheat either. But it did run to 210 on the steeper hills and pegged to hot on one steep climb. Once over the crest it would cool right back to the q80-190 level. But as the day wore on it was running warmer and warmer so I packed it in in Backer City Oregon. Tomorrow I will drive about 4 hours and stop for the night temps are predicted to run 106° and screw it. I am not bound by any appointments. I would recommend this Rt 84 run from East to West direction as those people look like its all down hill on that side.

JohnD1956
Tried to get another early start to beat the heat, but the waffles for breakfast foiled my plan. Well, that and re fueling-and dealing with an ornery air pump for checking the tires. I enjoyed the scenery as the low sun threw dramatic shadows on the mountains and hills. Will have to add pics later. Currently at Desert Winds truck stop East of Boise, where an excited woman asked if she could take a picture of my car. Seems her husband has the exact same one, only its red and a 57. She was from Austin Texas. Lol 4
JohnD1956
Okay, for the record, I am not excited about driving miss Annie in the desert heat any more. But apparently there is a lot more to come this way. I know that it is not boiling over, but the numerous times I hit 210* on the continuous hill climbs was a bit unsettling. Still the panorama views were GREAT today. And for a good portion of Oregon, it was a downhill slide. Just that in Idaho it felt like it was back to 6 mile climbs with 1/4 mile down hills before a plateau. Had to stop twice and clean my coolant filter. I also learned (or more likely forgot) that this coolant filter has a by pass valve. When I pulled it out to check it there was a buildup of larger debris. So now I am pulling it all the time. Here is a sample of what I am finding. I guess the hot runs are stirring up the recesses of the block and flushing this stuff. I don't know how much more there is in there. I hope it clears up before the end of this trip.
JohnD1956
As the day wore on I got less inclined to take pictures. There is a back story to that which I won't bother to bore you with. Lets just say I will be buying a separate GPS unit before I attempt anything like this again. Here are a few from Idaho Sorry this one is missing the right side. I couldn't see the screen on the phone camera in the bright sunlight 9
JohnD1956
And before dinner I went to these two landmarks. Annie had her photo taken a bunch of times here too these are the famous Twin Falls that the town is named for.
JohnD1956
And the 2nd site. 1st the approach. And the ramp And the view at the end of the ramp And the event. Probably when he did it there wasn't enough time for the nest of red flying ants that attacked me at the top to develop. Lucky guy..🫠 13
dmfconsult
Is 210 really something to worry about in a 322? I know the Electra seems to run in that temp range all day. (The hot light doesn’t even come until after 250 I think) Edited July 23, 2023 by dmfconsult (see edit history) 1
avgwarhawk
Hills always make the temp climb with my 264. It is unsettling but these nailhead make it to the summit. Sigh of relief and then watching the needle return to cooler readings on the decent.
