VW Photos for Peter G

I had a buddy who loved VW. I restored 1952 for and with him. He was a mechanic and a body man. He painted many a van of all types in the 1970’s using his artist license. He was involved with the Kool cigarette ad painting silver and adding graphics on many dozen of bugs. As time wore on the Beetles faded for sight. I asked him where they all went. His response was on a quiet day you could hear them rusting away.

My oldest brother was a bonified hippie (ironically he started a military career and retired as a captain after many years of service) and always had a VW of some type when I was a kid. A few bugs, and a couple of vans. He is also an accomplished artist and would paint them quite colourfully. I was too young to push but my 2 other older brothers told me the tales of how most of them needed a good push to get started, and what a POS most of them were. That burned into my head and is my thought of most I see. I suppose that is an unfair judgement as the reality is that they were most likely worn out well before he even bought them.  I am sure he paid next to nothing and drove them until they simply would not run any more, only to find another cheap, clapped out car somewhere else.

I think most VW beetles were just used up.  They got passed around in the family and got sacrificed for dune buggies and other platforms and faded away.  One of my favorite ads.  VW had great ads.

Used up? Not me I've had this one (A 1965 type 111 1200"A" Custom) since the 12th grade or 54 years. FYI, 1200"A" Custom is a subset model of the 1200"A" or former standard model. The one on the left of screen is mine. It's got 180,000 KLM and is all matching numbers. Original chrome too. The one on the rt. is a rare 1966 1200"A" Type 115 ragtop sunroof. note 117's were the deluxe metal sunroof.

The one below I bought 43 years ago. It's a U.S. spec. early production 1964 Type 113 (deluxe) just turned 181,000 miles last week.

For $3.58, you could have bought him this as a gift to start it!!

I worked for VW service department back in the day, I took home the parts delivery bus one weekend and it was cold and very windy, my drive way was a slight incline, after parking the "BUS" the night before in my driveway, I woke up the next morning to find the "BUS in the street in front of my house, engine had low compression and and wind blew it down the driveway and into the street.

I had to pick up a rototiller at a warehouse that same day it was in the street, extremely windy out, I drove over I-80 bridge on Harlem Avenue (4 lane road) and the "BUS" traveled across all 4 lanes of road with the wind, thank goodness no traffic at that time, I just had to go home and change my under pants.😂

I do LOVE the old Karmann Ghia's and old school buses like "FLUFFY" the comedian.

Our current and mist recent VW has been with us for 33 years.   This is the 10th VW we've owned.   Got my drivers license in  my father's new 1961 VW.

Had a 1957 in Germany while in the USAF.   Had another 57 rag top, a 73 Super Beetle,  a 71 Beetle, a 57 Porshce Speedster and a MGTD Replica Car on VW Chassis,  2 VW Dune Buggies, and a 64 Beetle while living in Hiedelberg, Germany for my junior year of collage (69-70).  The current one is a 1966, a Veteran of many AACA Tours. 2039082283_VWFounders.jpg.945699acf241348929998d567d81a0ec.jpgTours since 1994..

Sorry, the 1965 Canadian 1200 Custom come with the 40hp engine. The European 1200"A" and 1200"A" Custom come with the 36 hp engine. What is unusual is this is the last year for the 36hp, the end of an era of the original "E" motor that dates back to 1937 when it was designed by Franz Reimspiess of the Porsche design team. Also, in 1963 all VW engines get heat exchangers and new fan shrouds and tin.

Notice the difference in architecture between the 36 and the 40hp

36hp has the fuel pump to the left and a cast in generator stand. 1965 111 is also the last year of the manual choke. And although the cars both use the new (1961) tunnel type of transaxle the 65 1200"A" still uses the 4.44 ring and pinion of the split case compared to the 40hp's 4.375 R&P

The Porsche 356 engine design wise is in-between these two VW engines meaning they have a bolt on generator stand, but the fuel pump is over on the left like the 36 hp, the Porsche also uses a three-piece engine case instead of two, although the original early 356 used the VW engine case.

FYI the original VW logo was thisFile:VW logo 1937 to 1939.svg - Wikimedia Commons

Reimspiess also designed the suspension for the first 911 (901).

Here in the upper Midwest everything thing rusts. Knew a guy that had a VW van that was experiencing the CO in the heater issue. He didn’t have the money to fix it. One winter day we passed each other. As he went by I saw he was wearing a snorkel with the tube sticking out the window. You guys in the desert have it easy.

My 1958 VW when I was stationed in Germany after Vietnam 1971.  Drove that car for 16 months thru Germany and down to Italy on a short vacation. That gas pedal was always floored and never any problems.  Now I own the 1960 numbers match 36 hp Jade Green and a 1958 Light Bronze just like the one I had 51 years ago.

Way back in my college years, myself and another individual took it upon ourselves to swap the plug wires on a classmate's yellow bug convertible.  And it still ran.  He mentioned that it didn't seem to be running quite right but he still drove it regularly.   Seems to me it was at a Halloween party so they were swapped for 7 months before we put them back in their proper firing order so he could drive the 700 miles home.  Don't think he ever knew.
