AJFord54
This was found in a cemetery basement. It may not be al all related. Has anyone ever seen this?
46 woodie
Cemetery basement, the only thing I know of that's below ground in a cemetery is coffins. Wow, how macabre! Perhaps a tool for picking up something. Dead animals, etc?
AJFord54
It really doesn’t have the ability to lift anything heavy. I was thinking of a battery carrier. Thought of some sort of measuring device because of the small wheels. Floor duster?

zepher
It has a spring mechanism. Show us what it looks like with the mechanism open. Like it would use spring pressure to hold something in place.
AJFord54
It only moves about 1/2”. It has a limiting oval.
1937hd45
Probable held a bag for a carpet sweeper, was there a crematorium down in the basement? Bob Edited February 29, 2020 by 1937hd45 (see edit history) 1
AJFord54
Small hook on top near handle that might control the spring mechanism. Bob - you may be onto something. But don’t concentrate on the fact that it was in a cemetery basement, as the previous caretaker collected antiques as well.

Bob I tend to agree on the carpet sweeper concept. Maybe there was once wood attached.
Peter J.Heizmann
I would guess nothing to do with old vehicles.

capngrog
I've seen those before. They're used for transporting lost souls to the River Styx landing. Cheers, Grog 3

Hudsy Wudsy
Its pure blithering speculation on my part, but the limited distance that the spring mechanism allows for makes me wonder if part of it wasn't meant to hold something taut -- perhaps like fabric, or a bag of some sort. There's an antique tool site, if I recall right. Those guys are master speculators.
CHuDWah
Cemeteries have basements??!! Anyway, I'd guess carpet sweeper/dust pan. This one is a little fancier than most, with wheels and spring-loaded lid. I'd guess it once had fabric or tin over the wire frame to hold the sweepings. Here's a similar but less complex example. I've seen them as advertising novelties with the name of a business on them, including funeral homes - may be the cemetery connection: Maybe you can adapt it to a car 😉:
Rusty_OToole
That is an old dust mop. Have seen similar ones before. There is a cloth part that goes on the metal frame, it has a chenille cover. You sprinkle it with mop oil and run it over your tile floor or hardwood floor to keep it clean. Here is the modern version. Edited February 29, 2020 by Rusty_OToole (see edit history)
mike6024
Yep, that's why the spring mechanism only moves a little. It only needs to clip onto the mop head.
Rusty_OToole
Here is the vintage dust mop and mop oil ad. Could not find the exact model, the one in this thread is a large expensive type that would be used in an office building, store or other commercial establishment. It is the basement of the office of the cemetery where they stored documents, old flower pots, brass items, etc.
