Johanhansson
anyone who knows what they are for? bought an Oldsmobile 1931 in parts and these I do not know where to sit. can someone help me?
capngrog
They look like part of some sort of latching mechanism, perhaps for the hood or a window. That's just a guess, but I'll bet that someone on this Forum will know exactly what they're for. Cheers, Grog
ragtop4two
Those look like the window crank and lock for the small triangle vent window on the doors in front of the side windows
Johanhansson
what window do you mean? @ragtop4two
Bud Tierney
Did they have the little front vent windows as early as 31?? Well, fools rush in---is something that goes thru the circular parts clamped when the handle pushed down?? If so, extyerior trunk tie-down clamps?? Didn't google for pic; more fun guessing... keiser31
Are they big enough to be roadster/touring top holddowns?
mike6024
Looks like an eccentric mechanism that levers down. Interesting mechanism.
Jon37
wouldn't have anything to do with the sidemount spare hold-downs, would it?
Alfre
top part of a hood latch you are missing the barrel ,spring, and center rod that attaches to the car. Al
Johanhansson
@Alfre do you know somewhere you can see a picture of how it will look when it's complete? I have stuff left in boxes but do not know where everything is going to be sitting
Alfre
I don't have a photo but you are looking for a pipe that is threaded on one end and crimped almost closed on the other also a spring that fits inside the pipe and a rod that goes inside the spring that has an large flat washer that will not go through the spring and has a ball end on the other end that hooks into mount on car frame. Johanhansson
@Alfre do you think it's an Oldsmobile? or maybe someone else?
capngrog
These are the hood latches I was thinking about, but they seem to be of a different configuration from the mechanisms that you have. What you have could be similar to the tops of the latches shown and as described by Alfre in his Post #9 above. Good Luck, Grog
keiser31
Although I have never seen that "lever" type of hood latch, I agree with that identification. Those chrome items look to be high end car type. Edited June 18, 2018 by keiser31 (see edit history)
Graham Man
Graham had lever style in 1931 but they folded into the hood, one year only. I am putting my money on hood latches. They would have to have springs in them to stop the latches from bouncing around when you drive. Not correct for this 1931 Olds, similar type as the Graham. This is a 1930 Olds Coupe, still not correct
GARY F
If we could see a picture of your Olds that might help.
Steve Moskowitz
I have never seen these latches on a 31 Olds. They are way to robust an ornate and my bet they are for a much more higher end car.. My 29 Olds is a pretty similar car and I have pics of a 30 and 32 and they are all essentially the same common hood latch. I am trying to figure out what else they could have been used for and it is escaping me. My bet, is that they are not Olds but I will look at the parts book tomorrow and see. Johanhansson
I have the same hood lock as the blue you sent a picture of, a loop you grab, they are not mounted on the image I sent, but in the torpedo and in the front is a stick as it hooks in @GARY F
60FlatTop
Looks like something pirated. By someone who thinks he is a mechanic. Edited June 18, 2018 by 60FlatTop (see edit history)
Mark Shaw
These look more like a convertible top latch to me.
oily rag
With the height above the hook I don't think they are for a top latch. Rear trunk clamps is more likely. In the locked position with the handles down the handles would even with the bottom of the luggage rack.
