    Weak Turn Signal

Phil,If the flasher is the normal style where it depends on the current flowing through it to flash, then I'd say the bulbs are not high enough wattage to draw the required amount of current to flash. A solid state version suggested above (also referred to as a heavy duty flasher), does not rely on the current through to operate. A typical appliation is when towing where the addition of the trailer lights adds to the current and you get a higher flash rate. Try the solid state version first.
  3. Does anyone know what the capacatance value (in micro farads) of a condensor for a four cylinder 6 volt ignition system? This is for an eight cylinder engine that uses dual ignition; two seperate sets of points, coils and condensors. The originals are shorted out (background in photo) and their packaging requires a replacement that has a mounting flange with wire to the points (candidate in foreground), all intenal to the distributor.
  4. PM sent. Agree $400 seems high for just some bezels. Terry is right, just let a plater do the whole job. You'll be happy in the end.
  5. Checker, You're not being specific enough to fully answer your question about the part you need fabricated. 54 inches long is large, and proabably too big for the 3D printing suggested by Harry. May I suggest the molding urathanes and plastic resins from Smooth-On plastics: Smooth-On, Inc. - Mold Making & Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More Chris
  6. A suggestion from another DF user is to use the gauge from McMaster-Carr: McMaster-Carr Since I make up model L gas caps (Antique and Classic Automobile Restoration: Model l Lincoln Gas Cap) , I should be able to make the required adapter. 10. Agree with Restorer32, plastic won't work, just waste your time. While black beauty is good, unsure how good in a syphon blaster. My blasting tips: 1. Totally and I mean totally degrease the parts, with hand wire brushing. Blasting is not a substitute for degreasing and will triple your blasting time if you don't. 2. Use the play sand, double or triple sift it 3. Dry it in the hot sun or on a gas grill. It should flow freely through your fingers. Absolutely no moisture. 4. For pressure blasters, run air at 40-50 LBS, not 100+ its not needed and gives a smother finish with minimal clogs. The syphon balster may need extra air so maybe 60-70 LBS. Not everything is done at 125. 5. Wear a good double canister air respirator under the hood
  11. For those not familiar, there is another Discussion Forum called Garage-Journal.com There they offer construction, heat, electrical, flooring , and more ideas. It helps quite a bit if you plan to build or seeking improvements. Great to learn from others experience: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/ On there, is a thread about shop lighting and overall illumination which came from the woodworking hobby: It applies well to our hobby: Sawmill Creek Woodworkers Community - Lighting the Small Workshop - by Jack Lindsey Chris Wantuck
  12. To document this topic of recoating headlight reflectors, I spoke with Bill Atwood, president of UVIRA. Bill still offers his service to the collector car hobby. Bill himself is a car collector. According to Bill, even OEMs now use this process of aluminized coatings. Its also used in Hospital operating room overhead lights A customer must have his reflector copper and nickel plated and polished by a plating shop. Not chrome, the chrome layer defeats/reduces the reflection percentage. Then ship them to UVIRA where they will give it their special coating. Fee is $75 for a pair of reflectors. I used telephone (541) 474-5050 As a previous customer of UVIRA, the light's performance is outstanding and I recommend it. Chris Wantuck

  15. Phil, A source that is often overlooked for us in the car world are the trades and craftsman in other hobbies. In this case check out the medieval tin smiths. These are the guys that can roll and bend metal into tight tolerances. Isn't this funnel assembly like an arm covering? I believe they can be found under this consolidated website: METAL WEB NEWS I think there are NewsGroups out there for many trades like casters, glass blowers, etc. Like us, they like a challenge. 18. Ken, Assuming Tony was your Penn contact (its a small world) and he can't supply the red, investigate outside the US. I believe the burlap backed Linoleum is manufactured in either Switzerland or Sweden. I have a contact in Germany who maybe able to research a little on your behalf. What about using the white or grey and dyeing it deep red? Not the same I know, but something to think about. Perhaps vintage boat restorers?? Funny how Tony Lauria shows Red on his Webpage: http://www.battleshiplinoleum.com/Colors.htm Also check with the Australians, they come across materials we don't normally see. Restoration Supply Company in Escondido, CA offers grey and black. Perhaps they can refer you to their Supplier: http://www.restorationstuff.com/
  19. Curt, Radio Shack via the on-line store has two more candidates; part number 272-1142 a 6Volt bulb or part number 272-1128 a 6.3 Volt bulb (this one seems to be the standard #40 that was mentioned above from Chicago Miniature) RadioShack - mobile phones, MP3 players, laptops, and more
  20. These should be available on-line from larger distributors like Mouser Electronics: Mouser Electronics - Electronic Component Distributor Their catalog shows a couple of 6.3 Volt bulbs (CM40 or CM46): http://www.mouser.com/catalog/catalogUSD/645/2347.pdf Mouser part numbers 560-1775 or 560-7320 Also Chicago Miniature Lamp lists some threaded base 6.0 and 6.3 Volt bulbs: http://www.chml.com/products/pdf/2-49.pdf Mouser is a distributor for Chicago Miniature

  22. Happich's Semichrome Polish seems to fill the niche for both aggressive and fine polish whether the part is on or off the car. In My opinion, Happich Simichrome Polish - Metal Polish - Only $7.99! And, is it Wedol or Wenol that Dave referred to?
  23. A Google search showed: Uvira Inc has a location in Merlin, OR. Active officers include William W Atwood, Margaret Atwood and Kenneth Newfarmer. The company's line of business includes Mfg Search/Navigation Equipment Commercial Physical Research Mfg Optical Instruments/Lenses. Website: uvira.com - uvira Resources and Information. This website is for sale! (domain name for sale) direct dial: (541) 474-5050 Category: Mfg Search/Navigation Equipment Commercial Physical Research Mfg Optical Instruments/LensesDetection apparatus: electronic/magnetic field, light/heat, Optical instruments and lenses, Commercial physical research Source: Dun & Bradstreet last refreshed 11/14/2011 I have used UVIRA in the past and am satisfied with the results. UVIRA makes lighting systems for medical operating rooms and the company founder, Bill Atwood is a car collector. Bill would include a customers reflectors in with a batch of the companies product. Bill used to have the reflectors plated locally and then run them through his process. He now requires the reflectors to be shipped to him already plated in Nickel. As for plating: two possibilities, 1) Pauls Chrome in Evans City PA (near Pittsburgh) and 2) Lakeside Plating in Conneaut, Ohio. Let us know how you make out as this topic has come up several times on this and other car forums. Call again and ask for Bill by name, which should get you through the front door. I fear once Bill leaves, this capability will cease to exist. Chris Wantuck
  24. Jerry Saunders, This 6 volt Regulator-Adapter would not be suitable for your 12 volt AM/FM radio you are planning to install. This Regulator-Adapter being polled is specifically for use with modern electronics like cell phones, IPOD audio players, and GPS. The latest GPS units do have a cigarette lighter plug to operate on 12 volts, but inside the plug or somewhere in the cable is a regulator-reducer to the 5 volt level. This is why they come with two cords: cigarette plug for cigarete lighter and USB for cars now offering this modern connector. To operate your 12 volt AM/FM radio on the stock 6 volt system you would need an inverter, a device that takes 6 volts and bumps it up to 12 volts. More on these is at this article. The Meyer unit should be satisfactory for your installation: http://www.metroccca.org/tech_articles/tech_08_summer.pdf FYI these inverters do their 6 to 12 volt conversion at a price and can be taxing and/or drain the 6 volt battery if not carefull. My advice is to operate it only when the engine is running and the generator charging. An alternative is to consider a MP3 player that runs on USB power (hence you would need this regulator-adapter) and small accessory self powered speakers for use with laptops or IPOD's etc. Chris W.
  25. General interest question to the forum: Is there any interest in a special regulator/filter Adapter for operating modern electronics such as a GPS or charging your phone or operating an IPOD?? Such Regulator-Adapter would be packaged in a small box about the size of a pack of chewing gum, contain electronic filters to remove unwanted ignition and generator noise, a regulator to keep the output constant, and have a USB connector and output (rated at 5 volts at 1.0 Amp). Input would likely be screw terminals to connect to your ignition switch or power as you choose. This would only be for 6 volt positive or negative ground cars. Comments, interest, suggestions?? 1. Yes 2. Maybe, depending on price 3. No 4. No interest in modern electronics in my 6 volt car. Chris Wantuck friar1340@gmail.com
