  1. Fenders are too big for UPS (girth measurements). Consider using Greyhound Bus Lines. Supposedly if it fits in the cargo area of a bus, they'll take it and at pricing not much more than UPS.
  2. I too have used Delrin material as a Bakelit replacement. It machines nice and can be buffed. Another casting solution is from Smooth-On plastics (Smooth-On, Inc. - Mold Making & Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More). Their white urethanes can be tinted and they also have clear which can also be tinted to make tranlucent parts.
  3. For Sale: Automobile Quarterly Poster of early Lincolns; model L, model K, and model KB. dimensions: 25 high X 38 wide. Long out of print and suitable for framing, five available, one per customer, $30 each, plus shipping. Chris Wantuck email: friar1340@gmail.com
  4. For sale: A single plain Radiator Cap for a 1929 and 1930 model L Lincoln. The cap can be used as a night cap when overnight at a hotel or a touring cap if the owner doesn't want the grey hound to be damaged or stolen. This cap could also be used as a screw-on base for the grey hound ornamant by machining a hole in the center. Dimensions: Overall diameter is 3 3/4 inches, diameter of the threaded portion is 2 3/4 inches and the cap has a thickness of 11 /16 inches. Condition: This cap is recently machined from solid 360 brass stock with a knurled edge and polished. Even the new kitten likes the polished finish! 5. 1927 early 1928 model L Lincoln headlight parts: Headlight parts for a 1927 and early 1928 model L Lincoln. For sale are two reflectors, two headlight bezels and two Parabeam glass lenses. The reflectors are 10 3/4 inches diameter and 4 1/2 inches deep (5 1/4 inches to the end of the bayonette connector) and flange dimensions are 7/16 inch on the bottom of the reflector and 7/8 inch on the top of the reflector. The Parabeam lens is 10 11/16 inch diameter and fits in a 9 3/4 inch opening. The bezels are 11 3/6 inch diameter with Tee fastener to the headlight bucket. Condition: The reflectors are in good condition ready for plating. One bezel is virtually perfect and the other has two small dents which should be easily corrected by a competant plater. The glass lenses are in good usable condition with some polishing for show car use. Note the reflectors have the parking lamp inside and oriented to the top of the reflector. Also note the lenses are Parabeam not Depress Beam. Parts will be double packed to ensure safe transport. Shipping via UPS ground only. 6. Here is an example of an engine turned instrument cluster on a 1930 Lincoln. FYI, Skip Boyer in PA does this service as shown in the photo.
  7. Repair of the manifolds maybe an option. I have successfully welded cast iron using welding rods from Muggyweld (Muggy Weld Home - aluminum welding, pot metal repair, cast iron, silver solder). Look at their tutorial videos and follow instructions carefully. A little pricey but it maybe a good alternative for your situation.
  8. There is a series of books available from Restoration Supply Company, Escondido, Calf, (Restoration Supply Company) page 64 of their 2011 Spring catalog. The series is called Antique Auto Body Books Series for the Restorer. There is one specifically for Top Work which has a number of tips. But as David Coco just said there is much more to it. My two suggestions are: 1) make patterns using 4 inch wide masking tape peiced together. Each strip oriented from front to back that have slight overlap and taunt will show problem areas, especially around curves. Seems like a waste of tape, but it goes to making nice tight panels, and 2) make practice panels using mateial of similar weight and flex material that is inexpensive from the local fabric store.
  9. Bill, I believe the intent behind the dual point arrangement was to allow more time for the coils to reach maximum field strength (called saturation). It was believed that dividing the 8 cylinders up into two banks of four accomplished that. On my model L Lincoln, they used one set for the left bank of cylinders and the second ignition set for the other on their V-8. Again for Lincoln, there are timing marks on the flywheel for each set (R1 and R2). Using a simple Ohm meter-continuity tester, when the flywheel passes the respective mark is when the points are supposed to open (this is also called a static method). Look for marks on your flywheel to see if that is how Hupp did their timing (and possibly the valve timing as well). Let us know the results. Chris W.
  10. Rip a Fender Off a Car Send It In For a 1/2 pound Jar Burma-Shave And People Did!!
  11. Bernie, I'd like to see what you used for a rotissiere to flip the chassis over. My arrangement for my '30 Lincoln was a short A frame with cross beam and single pivot bolt. As for rubber, there is a moldable-liquid rubber product from Devcon that I have used for door cushion stops: Devcon 15800 - Flexane80 Medium Viscosity Liquid Urethane, 1 lb. $37 here in the states This right out of the can has a Shore A hardness of 80. There is also an additive from Devcon that will soften the hardness down to 60 or even less to suit your application.
  12. Try MSC Supply near Pittsburgh, PA: MSC Stainless Fasteners: Stainless steel fasteners for auto restoration, construction, industry and marine use
  13. This seems wider than 36 inches, looks like 38-40 inches wide based purely on optical comparison. If that wide, than right for 31-33 Cadillac or other large Marque. Restoration Specialties (Restoration Supply Company) has a a number of hardware components. Packard trunks I've seen have the blue Packard script emblem nailed on. As for hinges and hasps and other hardware, I suggest the polished stainless steel threaded rivet & brass threaded insert method: http://www.metroccca.org/tech_articles/tech_06_winter.pdf Chris Wantuck
  14. One more reason for my On-Line Flea Market suggestion I posted a couple of weeks ago.
  15. Bernie, I'll be a little critical here...Is this the stone guard you just referred to a couple of posts ago or will there a traditional stone guard mounted to the head light cross bar? This appears more like a facade for the radiator. Dont't confuse my comment...It looks nice....How did you attach it to the shell being as you already had it plated. If you knew you were doing this did you include some blind nuts before it went to the plater?
  16. Bernie, There is a 1926 orange packard Roadster that appeared on the front cover of the AACA magazine sometime in 1974. It has a nice stone guard design. Also attached is a 1924 Packard that recently debuted with a diagonal oriented guard. The other one is a 1929 I believe. These all seem to have a special design with an extra strand woven into the design. I know you're going to use what you purchased as is, so I would go on the diagonal. Chris Wantuck
  17. Like KenHupp20, I recommend going the repair route with MuggyWeld.com cast iron welding rods. You need both the 77 and 72 type rods: one for dirty cast iron (and an exhaust manifold qualifies as dirty) and the other to top over the first. I've used them successfully. Get a used manifold (perhaps a marine manifold from a junk yard) to practice on, (or whoever is doing the actual welding to practice on). Read instructions carefully, you have to use a back stich method of applying the rod. They're vidoes go a long way to show the results. Chris Wantuck
  18. 1. Plan on buying the $5.00 event program. Its a good resource during the event and afterwards if you need to follow up on vendors, etc. 2. bring your wish list. You said you're not looking for any parts, but you must have or need something. Bring pics of the part and/or dimensions to compare. 3. dress in layers as already mentioned with good walking shoes. include a hat, sun can beat down quite a bit. 4. bring a notepad to jot down notes, etc. 5. bring a newpaper style cloth sack or buy from Hemmings Motor news stand. Serious flea marketers use a hand truck with some sort of rubbermaid sealable container bungy corded. Folding shopping carts also work well. I've seen hand pushed golf bag carts with a 50 gallon trash can bungy corded that seem to work well.
  19. Bernie, The steering wheel on my 3rd series six is all wood. I like the Aluminum metal spoke version you have. It should polish up nicely or do you plan to do a dull finish. I had to peice mine back together and used a epoxy material available here in the states called Kwik Poly (kwikpolyllc.com). Kwik Poly is quite thin when mixed and wicks well into even the hardest of woods. You can also tint it with pigment to disguise/blend against the base wood color any material that may weep out the seams. Does your six have the central Bujuir Lubricator system?
  20. Bernie, and those following this thread, Stayfast is the modern replacement convertible top mateial that is cloth based to be period corrrect for our restorations. It comes in multiple colors and combinations for both inside and outside layers to suit many restoration coors combos. It is the replacement for Haartz cloth which was the original convert top material of the 20-30's. Interesting that the Haartz family is still producing their cloth, though not sure why its considered given Stayfast's good performance for water proffing and durability. Bill Hirsch Automotive here in the States is the vendor I purchase Stayfast.
  21. Bernie, Have you resolved what the color scheme is going to be, Last time we chatted about it you were thinking of a beige and brown. If that is the same plan then this swatch you shared should be striking. How does the proposed laminated Heat sealed with Butyl rubber differ than Stayfast brand top material. Would this three ply fabric be too thick to fold when the top is put down?? Chris
  22. Motoringicons beat me to it. Classic Services website is: King Seeley and Hobson Fuel Gauge Parts and Supplies
  23. Shop Rat, Restorer32, and Dave, Thank you for the comments and feedback. I did not want this to be an auction for the reasons Shop Rat stated. The ability to post wanted items is something I missed and I've revised my plan accordingly. Thanks Restorer32. This would be as automated as possible and believe their would have to be a moderator/webmaster of some sort. FYI craigslist claims to run their 700 regional sites with about 30 people. The length of time would have to be thought about carefully, even old ads could be still valid. The plan (concept) has been revised to permit a search function if the listing vendor knew what the item fits.
  24. Dick Whittington, Thanks for offering this response to my On-Line Flea market suggestion. You mention pursuing as an auction. In an auction venue, the seller has to know what the item is or at least describe it. At that point Ebay satisfies that need. My suggestion is not an auction, just a means to bring together parts and collectors. Chris
  25. May I suggest Kerosene instead? You may develop a leak from a seal until the replacement lubricant is added. Perhaps using compressed air to dry out the tranny or just air dry it. residual fluid may dilute the final oil fill.
