  1. There is a totally restored Playboy in Lexington KY. If I remember correctly it’s in a front window of a photography business at 427 S Mill. It may be Lee Thomas Photo. Not positive of name but address should be correct. My daughter lived across the street when she taught at KY U a few years ago. They had the area open to the public and all kinds of poster size pics of original sales material on the walls. They may be able to sell you copies. dave s
  2. War is and always has been hell as everyone knows. One thing to think about today compared to The world wars is these kids ( they are just kids to a 74 year old) are surviving as wounded warriors at a much higher rate than our fathers and grand fathers did. Helicopters get the wounded to MASH type units much faster than a jeep or 3/4 ton could in WWII or Korea. Viet Nam saw more disabled troops coming home the nation was not prepared for. In 67 Walter Reed Hospital didn’t have wheel chair ramps on a lot of the buildings. Iraq and Afghanistan have sent home so many PTS cases the system couldn’t and don’t know how to handle. I guess I’m trying to say WWII gave us the greatest generation but every kid, girl or guy that has served to protect this country deserve our everlasting profound thanks and respect. Don’t just say “Thanks for your service” mean it and if possible help a vet in need, they’re out there and unfortunately you really don’t have to look to hard to find one. dave s
  3. I don’t know how many horsepower my Austin Healy had but it would break all the spokes in the wire wheels on the rear if I popped the clutch in first. Not stock of course. A Ford 289, 10.5 to 1 forged high rise pistons, 310 duration cam, solid lifters, deburred intake and exhaust headers, 4 barrel Holley (1200? It’s been 50+ years), 4 speed and echlin gold plated points/spark plug wire ends and distributer cap. We extended the oil pump so it had 11 quarts to help keep it cool. We put tubes thru the oil pan from front to rear to act as an oil cooler as there was no room for an actual one. Corks would go in during the winter if too cold. Made a lot of cash running it against the muscle cars of the late 60’s. Lot of fun back in the day ( well my day anyway) dave s
  4. He led a special spectacular life, these no doubt about that. He supposedly had a major regret in that he wasn’t chosen for the astronaut program and wasn’t the first man in space for the USA. There are also stories he would get in a plane and ask the mechanic how to start it, knowing if he knew how to do that he would probably be the test pilot as he had an advantage over any other test pilot on the base. Quite a character. dave s
  5. I was sent to Germany after I got out of Walter Reed in 68. We would talk to older Germans in the local guest house (bar to us) about the war. They told us the same story a good friend’s father that was a light tank commander told us. The GI’s were crazy guys. They would come to a town and at night knowing there was a brewery or winery in the town would load up a truck and get a tank and take the brewery. Drink all night and then have to fight their way out of town! They said more small towns were taken from fighting out of town than going in. They also said they were very happy we were over there protecting them than them having to be the protectors over here! God bless all of our young people that have ever served for the ideas of this country. dave s
  6. Thank uncle Al, all of those kids were heroes that sacrificed more than just their youth. Too many gave everything that I fear a younger generation just doesn’t understand. My era was Nam, that, Iraq and Afghanistan just were not the same total commitment that WW II did in many ways.
  7. 2403 lives lost at Pearl Harbor if I remember correctly. If you have never been to the Arizona memorial put it on your bucket list. The fuel oil leaking is the tears of the nation.
  8. Wayne are you saying you were happy he was 70 miles from home? Lol dave s
  9. The Americans of Japanese heritage had one of the most decorated battalions in the Pacific campaign. It’s amazing they accomplished that when their families were being treated the way they were back in the states. dave s
  10. Rusty OToole Leno then put another $500,000 into restoration of that car. dave s
  11. One thing that may help is to reboot your modem/wireless connection. I’ve had eBay hang up before and for some reason when I do that it works again. Sorry I’ve never invoiced on eBay and have no idea how or I would do it for you. dave s
  12. You’ll love this. We were just processing change of addresses and undeliverable cancels for the last pub we have still as a customer. we got an UNABLE to DELIVER or FORWARD for a magazine going to the “USPS authority” for checking on magazine advertising percentages! You have to love the USPS
  13. I would never personally have a collection like that. If I had the cash I would love a 34 Auburn 12, a 34 Pierce Arrow Silver Arrow and a Jaguar Mk IX. I’ve always loved the big jag for some reason. That would be it so I could drive them! I would give anyone a ride if they wanted too ( post pandemic of course, mask required). I would rather see a dirty classic than walk thru a building with cars just sitting shined up to look good but never driven. But again to each his own. I will say there is no accounting for taste!! I don’t like his but that’s just me. dave s
  14. I refuse to use the USPS when I ship anything. It’s FedEx or UPS. I did work for Pro Football Weekly for about 25 years. The magazine was printed Sunday night, we had people keying stats from every game into a program that produced a tape the printer could load and print from. We sorted the labels based on flight schedules out of OHARE to about 20 different USPS centers. The first issue we did went smoothly and the printer delivered the magazines to OHARE and the one USPS main Chicago post office. The one that the Ike expressway ran thru. Wednesday the publisher called me ranting we messed up no one was getting delivery. This was a major problem as many used the stats and injury reports to place bets! I called the printer and he said there was no problem the sorts and labels were perfect. We met the publisher at the Chicago PO. They said all was in order so we asked to talk with the department head that signed off and we found out a replacement guy thought the pink tag on the bags were for dead letters not immediate delivery bags! We literally drove are cars around the third floor of the Chicago post office collecting bags and getting them to the correct area to send out. They threatened to arrest us until the publisher said his lawyer was already drawing up the lawsuit. The USPS just doesn’t care about mistakes because they do so much correctly. It’s just too big to worry about the small stuff. dave s
  15. It has to be the USPS doesn’t like ED! I just received suspension parts from Florida in 3 days. Ordered Monday afternoon and arrived today. So there can be no other reason his is taking so long! dave s I guess my Great White ride is in jeopardy.
  16. He is/was a successful guy. He’s enjoying his hobby. It may not be the way many of us would spend that kind of money or on that kind of collection. But it’s his money and we do live in a free country! It’s his right, he’s not hurting anyone and he gives back to charity! If you don’t like his collection don’t go see it on the days it’s open but donate the money he would have to a charity of your choice. dave s
  17. Fh4ever. I’ll be happy to take pics and post. Please know I have a few other things to finish before that happens. Also I’m not going to do it until the retainer is available. The 38 and 39 should be almost identical, mine works fine but just makes an annoying noise as I go down the road. The 38 is my daily driver around town. dave s
  18. Got it figured out. With the car on jack stands nothing seems loose but put it back on the ground and it’s a different story. The right steering rod knuckle is worn and loose. Up off the ground and the weight of the wheel and suspension parts weight keeps it from moving. It was hard for an old crippled up fat guy to slide under it and start trying to move parts and see what part was moving. I lift would have made things much easier but this is out of my budget range. ordered both knuckles as I figured if one is worn best to replace both for the extra $38 knuckle cost. Going to have alignment checked tomorrow. Total cost of 2 knuckles, 2 tires, mounting, balance and alignment was just over $600. dave s

  20. I think the young ladies would be a little older now and probably would say that is just too politically incorrect!
  21. Ed, are you saying the workers had the white steam cars and the BOSS had the Great White model? dave s
  22. When I was in the army and sent to Germany after getting out of Walter Reed they didn’t know what to do with me, so they made me a radio operator. On 8 off 24 with a 3 day pass every 3 weeks. We would pull a double just before the pass and actually have a week off. We had to transmit in code from the secure radio code room. As it was a secure room we non-coms would hold our short timers parties in it as the officers could not have access. One night a message came in when we were having one of the send offs that I decoded saying the battalion (we were headquarters co and had 4 more companies-about 1200 troops) was being sent out on alert. I took it up to S3 or S4 what ever the intelligence group was called. They said I was nuts and go back and check again. So I sent a request for a resend. Same thing. Again S3 said no way they always have advantage notice about an alert. So back to the radio and instead of using the radio I called battalion and told them we were in the middle of a short timers party what were they sending me? They were asking for a radio status report. I was not very good at deciding Morris code. I went from a Spec5 to a Spec4 the next day! I can also say I made Spec5 more than twice in my two years. dave s
