Not just any 1942 model but the top-of-the-line Studebaker President Eight Skyway Land Cruiser Sedan.  At $1,276 fob South Bend, under the Raymond Loewy Associates design consultancy lead by Virgil Exner, the clean elegant styling themes of the Cadillac 60 Special were made available to medium-priced car buyers.

Your caption to the conversation going on between the women in their mired touring.

They're not saying anything out loud. Just quietly gossiping amongst themselves while the chauffeur stands next to the car.

There are many photos of old race cars like this and they always use the word 'sur' (French of on). In that era you sat on a car rather than in it.

Btw note the size of that front sprocket - a sure sign that it is geared for speed, maybe 80-90 mph/1,000rpm. This is the 'Heroic age'.

True words, well stated. Many seeing this will never think of that unless you have ridden in a car of that era ( and lack of fenders, doors, etc) the driver had a steering wheel to hold on to to be somewhat "secure" the riding mechanic usually nothing. I have been in the riding mechanic seat on several early pre WWI cars ( Mercer type 35, chain drive Simplex and Locomobile all of considerable horsepower) and to see the ground go past you in a blur while knowing that a good bump in the road would send you flying out of the car can be a test to your stamina.

Panhard et Levassor 12-14HP Sydney 16th June 1906.

"Lady Tennant luches at XXXX today and afterwards I took her to Manly in this fine Panhard car" from the Allen family album, State Library NSW.

Can anyone work out what the XXXX part is? That old cursive is tough to decipher.
