Driving a prewar car is most likely the closest I will ever get to being in a time machine.

You should try a steamer some time. Basic elements of fire and water. no electricity involved. Quiet smooth natural power.

I would love to!

But unfortunately I don't know anyone that owns one.

I've ridden on a train that was pulled by a steam engine but I really want to be in the cab where all the excitement is.  😊

There is a very good chance that California, being the most progressive state, will be the 1st state to follow other countries around the world to ban ICE vehicles, how they go about it will be interesting.

When the Chinese start mass producing cheap electric cars, similar to what the Japanese did in the 70's/80's, the snowballing will start. The opportunities for the future thinkers will be endless. Vehicle 'ownership' will not be the same as the past.

Never going to happen, not in the US. When even more people join the present exodus from California, they will realize nobody wants to live in their liberal Utopia, and allow people again to drive whatever they want. The people that are leaving are the job creating business owners and working taxpaying citizenry, the back bone of any economy. This sort of thing is going to accelerate the looming bankruptcy of California. Nope, sorry this is just another bad idea that will be shelved. hide and watch.

Wonder how many "Greenies" know gas cars are 97% pollution free and have been since the 1980s?

If electric cars are 98% pollution free and gas cars are 97% pollution free and electric car batteries cause a lot more environmental destruction, and are harder to recycle safely, then what is to gain from electric cars?

Control, they only want us to be able to move a few hundred miles each day. Hard to fight off an invasion when you cannot move into a position to defend yourself.

Electric cars have no soul. They are an appliance. They are about as exciting as a toaster. Nobody has or will ever wake up on a cold sweat dreaming of an electric car. If you think I am wrong then you have never brought an engine back to life after sitting idle for decades. That first pop, the smell the sound as the machine literally comes to life. Plugging and extension cord into a wall socket doesn't have the same appeal. We have to go green and electric while China pours acid into rivers and pollutes like mad men? I say no. I say be careful who you vote for. Just to be safe I recommend a straight Republican ticket for the next 50-60 years. The extreme left wants your money, guns, cars, freedom and even to take away your pet dog. If you want universal basic income and socialism move to the USSR. Oh wait a minute it didn't work out so well for them did it.

Fixed that for ya 😉

Oh wait, there's no such thing as a hybrid toaster....? give it time, I'm sure it's next on the agenda.

AOC's thought process while at home:

"Damn toasters ! They have to go !!! They are creating fumes in my kitchen that are ruining everyones breathing"

Solicitor standing at the door:

Uhhh lady, it's called smoke, I think your toast is burnt....🙄

Sure, laugh at the stupidity of it, but trust me, they are capable of "forward thinking" like no other. HT's are coming people, it's only a matter of time.

Looked at any new gasoline cars, er, SUVs lately?  They are just rolling WiFi hot spots with all the soul of your cell phone. But at least they are all really fugly.

Joe,

You are absolutely right. When I look at the new cars I feel like I took the bad acid from Woodstock, where the competition between designers is to see who can come up with the worst concept and still get the public to buy (the emporer has no clothes!) Chevy's hideous new Blazer is displaying its atavistic link to the (thankfully) extinct Pontiac Aztec.

Just a caution folks...legitimate subject but let's not let this thing go down the rat hole.

SEMA and all the clubs with legislative activism will need to be diligent in contacting their legislators.  I imagine other industry groups will be active as well.  Most importantly, the car culture in California is strong and those folks need to call and write!

Not only is the car culture strong in California as to vintage cars, but the state as a whole is a huge player in the entire new automotive industry and resulting US economy including component part manufacturing, distribution, and ... - you are basically talking a "mecca."

What the general populous in Calif need or want means nothing to the politicians and special interest in this state.

All that matters is political power, campaign contributions, virtue signalling and furthering the Leftist agenda.

In my youth, riding a motorcycle, that black smoke photo is reminiscent of being stuck behind city buses and coming home nearly as black as the smoke.  There are pluses to cleaner diesels on the road today.

Interesting thing about Diesels, you want power just turn the boost way up, use a big intercooler and keep adding fuel all the way down the power stroke.

Power output can be truly amazing. Look at military high speed marine diesels vs civilian. The Company I worked for  started out with civil spec engines on their high speed vessels , rapidly upgraded to the military version after numerous blown turbo's and heads.

Turbo's and aftercoolers are almost as large as the engine.

Reasonably compact package , better economy than a similar output gas turbine.

Engines like these are why I used to joke with certain co- workers that we were really " global warming " engineers rather than Marine Engineers.

Just remember that the California ban proposal is not just gasoline, but diesel as well. California is not alone in this thinking as the EU and the UK are already on board with this and so are many people. A example of this is this;

XXXXXXXXX will introduce legislation to mandate zero-emissions vehicles make up all new car sales by 2040.

The bill is co-sponsored by three XXXXXXXXX running for president in 2020 who support the Green New Deal.

Again, "new car sales", not a "ban" on existing IC vehicles.

If Pennsylvania decided to band Gas Cars we'd go bankrupt here with out the 30 cent per gallon State Sales Tax.

Highest Fuel Tax in the US and a large Oil Producing State.

Although we do have a large segment on the population using Horse and Buggy...........The Amish!

California has already worked that out. Every electric and Hybrid car will be talking ( GPS) to motor vehicles dept. to calculate how many miles you've driven to you can pay your fair share of road taxes. Arizona is already in deliberations of how to implement this too.

SO LAUGH ALL YOU WANT!

It may take a bit to get it  done.. Some one  cut the cord on the California’s high speed rail project..

People will  only buy the other cars  when it makes sense because gasoline is too high.. It all about what will it cost to drive..

I am old enough to remember the history of 1970 -1974.. No gasoline.. No more Hemi cuda's -  They all started to buy small cars from Honda, Toyota..

So what is the cost of gasoline in Calif today?
