AUTOSPARKER
For what was the purpose of the square hole on this circa 1916 advertising piece.
46 woodie
The "hook" is probably a bottle opener. As for the round and square hole, the wheels and the blunted screwdriver can probably used as a multi tool. Just some sort of give away from a car dealer. The square could be used on a water, valve stem.
chistech
Bottle opener and a outside water valve spigot wrench. Don’t know how many times my dad would go looking for the small handle to open the water valve on our house. Truefully, I’m only guessing but a guy in his yard on the weekend walking with a beer in his hand and a wrench to open the water sounds about right! 1912Staver
If it circa 1916 the square hole is to turn on and off a prest-o-lite tank. Greg in Canada Edited December 13, 2018 by 1912Staver (see edit history) 3

PFitz
Some of you many not be old enough to remember the days before lace-up roller skates. It may be a "skate key". The old clamp-on roller skates used a square holed key to tighten the front and rear shoe clamps. It was also the age of needing a bottle opener for soft drinks after working up a thirst skating all over the neighborhood. Paul
HarryLime
It is for the Prest o lite tank valve. And so ubiquitous all advertising key fobs had the square hole, even the ones from brewers .
keiser31
It may also work for the square fasteners on the outside of the brass lamps....
cessna195
I also think it is for a Prestolite tank. John

A tank of gas to light the road ahead by gaslight, pre electric lighting.
