MochetVelo
Can anyone suggest a source for good-looking leatherette? I guess it's all vinyl today, but just wondering if anyone sells a type that has a vintage look. Phil
Bill Harmatuk
Its illegal to trap naughas anymore. Therefore you can't get Naughahide. I guess vinyl will have to suffice. Bill H

Grimy
The naughas are found only in the Dupont Forest
JFranklin
What make/model is your car? If it was originally done in leather you should re-do it the same and not devalue your car.
edinmass
Naughas may be on the endangered list but the pleathers are still fair game; and pleather makes a fine seat covering. Most are shot in China. It’s my understanding that “them is good eating!”, just use lots of catchup and drink a nice Chanti. No fava beans! MochetVelo
My car is a 1924 Citroen. It had "similicuir" (as the French call it), or "leatherette" upholstery. Phil
C Carl
Obviously some type of coated fabric. Mercedes-Benz has used a faux leather on lesser cars over the years. A fabric they call "MB Tex". I really don't know how similar that would be for a correct restoration, as all my M-Bs have leather. - Carl
Bloo
I think If I really needed to replace it I would use real leather of some kind. IMHO modern vinyl never seems to hold up the prewar illusion for very long. As for the real thing, it may be a bit difficult to track down. A year or two ago I was trying to find a source for some real "leatherette". As I understand it, 1920s and 1930s "leatherette" was "Fabrikoid" in the USA and "Rexine" in the UK. Both were nitrocellulose products. I have no idea what was in French similicuir in 1924. I doubt PVC/Vinyl existed. As near as I can tell, Fabrikoid has been out of production for decades. There was an article circulating virally on the Internet a few years ago about a guy who rescued the last Rexine manufacturing equipment from a building that was being demolished. Supposedly he restored the machinery, started making more Rexine, and then discovered that Rexine was still in production in India. I'm not sure I believe the last part of the story, because if you search for Rexine in India, it seems that the word "Rexine" is also used for PVC/Vinyl materials. Of course the real thing might exist there, but if so, there doesn't seem to be a readily available Internet source, even now. For what it's worth "Pyroxylin" (the coating material) is a good search term. Here are a couple of potential UK sources that I never contacted: https://ratchford.co.uk/product-category/bookcloth-and-covering-materials/bookcloth-coverings/leathercloth/ http://www.hewitonline.com/product_p/cl-170-000.htm I hope you get more responses. This could be an interesting thread. Edited November 4, 2018 by Bloo (see edit history)
Tim Wolfe
Check out a material called RAVE, looks and feels like leather. Made by Spradling International. MochetVelo
Bloo's second source (hewitonline) sells "nitrocellulose coated" leather cloth. I may order some to see what it looks like. I may end up using leather, but it would be nice to investigate the original material. Phil
Eldovert
You might consider old leather coats from a thrift shop..or a big old leather couch for the "aged" material. Cheers,Pat

mike6024
Modern leather-look vinyl seems to come in a wide variety of surface textures. None will come close to matching what you showed there as far as I know. You may find a reasonably good color match, assuming you want that reddish/burgundy color, and some texture you like though. These samples, the small one is burgundy (20150) and the larger is Carmen red (U20143/R). The Carmen looks burgundy to me. The burgundy 20150 has some tiny black dots in it and looks more brownish. Burgundy 20150 - http://reoriginals.com/vinyloriginalburgundyseatandconsolematerial-u20150.aspx This is actually a brown - https://classicalfa.com/products.php?product=IN302-ALFA-CINGHIALE-(BROWN)-VINYL-SKAI-%2d-EARLY-CARS Edited November 6, 2018 by mike6024 (see edit history)
