  1. Ok My original brake cylinders were screwed up by a well known rebuilder. The bleeder seat on the cylinders was destroyed by an over acheaver on the bead blaster, when they cleaned them up prior to re-sleaving. Cut the machined seat for the bleeder valve all to............. Sent them back. They installed heli-coils and what ever, and they still leak from the bleeder valves. Not looking back. I'm moving forward. Cost me a lot of time which is expensive. THE QUESTION I have a new set of 4 brake cylinders that have 1 1/4 and 1 3/8 bore. 248.00, thank you. My old brake cylinders were a straight 1 1/4 bore. I don't think it makes a hill of beans differance in regaurd to the stepped bore. . Am I wrong?? Hope not. I'm using the original master cylinder. Which way is the larger bore on the brake cylinder supposed to be orientated.?? I hope the front shoe. Thats the only way it can bolt up. Yes, I'm using silicone brake fluid from Cartel. Thanks in advance Bill H
  2. I was once a NC state certified welder. I've seen a lot of welds and one of my best friends can weld cast iron. That is a pretty weld for cast. But pretty means nothing. Penetration looks good. Some one knew what they were doing. Don't monkey with it. I would count my blessings and don't worry about it. I might put some very, very, very slight pressure on it when the head is re-installed and check for leaks. If even that. My 2 Cents Bill H
  3. I've seen a speedometer go all the way around and come back to 15, in a (built), 1967 RS/SS 350 Camaro. My brother dogged that car to death. Ended up selling it for 250.00 with bent valves. That was when 67 Camaros were a dime a dozen. (I don't think 67 Chevrolet had a stop on the speedo at zero.) I saw it go to 15. 5 Liter Mustangs were killing a BUNCH of kids around here when they first came out. Bill H
  4. This will get you going. All 4 door automobiles are bottom dwellers. They have no significant value. Least desirable. Coups, roadsters, touring cars and victoria body styles are the most collectable. (I'm being an @&& #**)!+} Other than that I LOVE this site and I think I'm addicted to the posts and info that is shared. I have met some AWSOME fellow enthusiasts through this web site. Bought some nice parts. (Got some I need to sell / give away also.} Thanks for the moderators and the job they do. I visit the AACA Forum close to 6 times a day. You get the first click when I open the laptop. Thanks everyone. Bill Harmatuk
  5. Thats a China closet piece. Pretty. Hope it finds a good / correct home. Bill H
  6. 1959 Chevrolet Impala convertable with 348 3 deuces, every option, including wonder bar radio, dual antennas and continental kit, with fender skirts. Parked under a tobacco barn shelter, off the beaten path. Black with red and white interior. The old man would even wax it from time to time. Get this. 2800.00. Probably 1989. Didn't have the money and it sold before I could get to the bank. I was told that some one from Virginia Beach came with a roll back..... Counted out 30 one hundred dollar bills and drove off with it. I cried. Still haunts me.
  7. The reflectors are still in the plastic. My "rebuilt, brass sleeved", brake cylinder, bleeder valves are beating me up. 2 bleeders leaking. 1 bleeder stripped. gonna have to get 4 new brake cylinders. I quit for a while. I'm having the fenders and splash aprons painted. Haven't gotten to the headlights yet. Great advise on grounding the socket. Thanks.
  8. Have another shop work on it. Leave the press alone and seat the race and bearing the old fashion way. Some one doesn't know how to use calipers either. All you're talking about is a shaft, bearing and a hub. Yes. Ive seen / put on 3 bad, new / rebuilt, alternators. I guarantee that they are pressing the bearing in the hub with / by /using the inner race. A No no for a tapered roller bearing. Good luck. I feel your pain. Bill H AND. This car is front wheel drive?? So the rear does nothing except rotate. Find another mechanic.
  9. Bought this at an antique shop in New Bern. Payed too much for it. Thats probably why it was there a week later. I couldn't resist. A real prize. NEVER saw one before especially in my home town. Yes. We have lots of water. New Bern is nestled in the junction of 2 rivers. Thats why I've lived here for 62 years. Bill H
  10. Was going through my parts for my 1930 Chrysler CJ. Thought you guys would like to see an example of Uvira's work. I first had these nickel plated then sent them to Bill. Great Guy. Talked to him for about 20 minutes. Interesting Man. Can't recall thee prices of the nickel and Uvira's coating but it was reasonable. This is the same coating on the light at the dentist office. Bill H
  11. Thats just an aluminum bell housing isn't it?? I may be wrong but won't a Saginaw and Muncie interchange?? Same bell housing?? Don't know if length is the same. I think I have a bell housing that I had as a spare for a 1968, 327 Muncie. Never owned or swapped a Saginaw, so I don't know. I'm not using it. When some one confirms that "all bell housings are the same" your welcome to it.... Not much more than shipping. Bill New Bern, N.C.
  12. Looks like your dealer stuck it to you and you didn't do your home work. I would have taken the car back and called the police or sheriff. Or threatened to drive it through his window. I own 4 Toyotas. 2017 Tundra Limited 4 days old. 2016 Land Cruiser, Wife"s car. 2008 Yaris hatch back, 145,000 hard miles and not ONE problem. 2000 Tundra, 245,000 miles, Runs as new. Looks great. Owes me nothing. 1997 Rav 4 (daughters car), bought new, 340,000 miles. Driven every day. Owes her nothing. No Problems at all. EVER. I will not own a Ford. Chevrolets are built to give the dealer"s service department something to do. European cars are money pits. If you want the low down on an automobile.... Talk to a good ole boy tow truck driver, in a big city, about Fords, Chevrolets, and Volvos. Hope I didn't P)&$ you off but Ive been working on cars for my entire life and still do most of my preventative maintenance and oil changes. Bill H
  13. Went to buy a Mustang in 1979. The gaps in the hood and doors, fit in finish, was disgusting. I went to the Datsun dealership and this is what rolled off the show room floor. 1 per dealer. 1001 produced with the stripes and whale tail. Datsun, 280 ZXR. I drove the crap out of it till I got married and along came a baby. 144,000 miles with NO problems. No baby seat in this. Wish I had her back. I think I payed 14,800 for it. Bill H
  14. Flat head 5 hp Briggs and PURE nitromethane. Of course we wanted to see what would happen if we poured the pint of nitro into a half empty, or less, gas tank on my buddies go cart. Dumped it in. No body on the go cart. Pulled the recoil start. It took about 2 seconds for the nitro to get to the combustion chamber. The motor screamed. The wheel spun. We froze. The go cart took off. Ran into a tree. Broke the frame on one side and the motor Exploded. All this happened in about 5 seconds and we still never moved. It threw the piston into the sump and busted the side case. My friend that owned the go cart started crying and myself and my other instigator buddy, started laughing. No You Tube back then.
  15. Sitting in my Dad's lap?? 51 Chevrolet sedan. Lap 52 Ford 1/2 ton truck. by myself, around the lot next door, when my parents were gone. Before that it was Towmotors. Sitting in various laps. Probably 5 or 6 years old. Most AWSOME. 1955 Chevrolet 210 with a REAL 427, 4 speed, tunnel ram with 2, 4 barrels, crammed between the fenders with a 4.10 rear end gear. I was about 17. I sat in a AA/ Fuel Dragster, with it running, one time. Owner wouldn't let me drive it but he gave me a pint can of PURE nitromethane to take home. Thats another story about my buddies 5 hp go cart. I was 14. ( Centrifical clutches, flat head Briggs, and nitro don't mix. ) Bill H
  16. I once had a fly wheel loosen up. It was a 56 Ford but it made a constant clunk, clunk when idling. That is where I would start. With a manual transmission it would require dropping the transmission and clutch / pressure plate. Good luck. Bill H
  17. Great thread people ! ! The 73 "Cuda is a COMPLETE rust bucket. And is complete. Motor, trans, everything, with air. 360, 2 barrel. What I hate is.... Over its life. How many people asked the owner.... Do you want to sell the Cuda?? I know where there is a 59 Chevrolet Impala convertible in the same shape. with a 60, 61, 62 Impala 2 dr. hard top sitting next to it in the woods, not for sale. Makes a grown man cry. Bill H Let me find the pictures of the 63 Corvette, 427, 4 speed, with hard top, sitting in the field. NOT FOR SALE. I chased it for years.
  18. I have a 30 Chrysler CJ 6. I use Auto Zone batteries in everything. Do yourself a favor. Go to Rhode Island Wiring Company's web site and get their duplicate of original Negative and Positive cables. Your Desoto and my Chrysler are basically the same car. The cables should be the same. I can send pictures. Never a problem cranking my 6 cylinder, and I have a flooding BB-1 carburetor. (with a rebuild kit next to it) and the generator isn't hooked up. Bill H
  19. When I see a "hulk", (shell), of a 1967 Camaro.... rusted and sitting on the ground. The owner asking 5000.00 for it. I say the market is going....Stupid. Between Barrett Jackson and all the other shows...Nothing is realistic any more as to collector automobiles. Then we have the rat rod culture whom I can Identify with,.... but 23,000 for a rat rod? I looked at a plain jane 1965 Chevelle convertible yesterday. It is driveable. Needs 2 door skins and a quarter panel patch. Floor patch. total job, you might say. The guy is asking 11,000.00, firm. For the hobby. Nice automobiles, restored, not rodded, can be had at fair and some "give away"prices in the 1928 to 1954 slot. Just my observation and 2 cents. Bill Harmatuk
