  2. Denatured alcohol. Works great. A little bit on a small cotton cloth or paper towel. I know it won't harm clear coat, but haven't used it on single stage paints. Bill H
  3. Nice car!! You lucky rascal. Please bring it back to its full potential or clean her up and drive it. That hubcap in your picture. That is the first one I have seen on a complete Chrysler product. I was told by an older fellow that the car came from the factory with 3 that were the "mushroom" shaped hub cap and one that has the hex design with the C script, like you have. From what I was told, the car wore it on the left side facing away from the curb as if it were parked on the street. The 2 larger "mushroom" shaped caps were facing the curb / side walk. My 30 CJ sedan came with the same hubcap as you but it is damaged. I also have the wrench that came with the car, that fits the hex cap on one end and the spanner wrench on the other end of the tool that fits the "mushroom" type cap. If ya wanna sell that cap send me a private message and I'll send you a replacement "mushroom" style cap. Every 29 to 31 Chrysler I have ever seen in pictures has 4 "mushroom" style caps..... Except yours. The fact that your car still has the one bastard grease cap, (the hex one), tells me something about the originality of your car. Congratulations on your acquisition. Bill H
  4. When I was a kid, I used to make gaskets from cereal box material all the time. Carburetor, transmission, differential, water pump, etc. A little coat of chassis grease, spread with the fingers before installation and your good to go. Never a problem if done right. I guess I am the only one to admit to it. I learned the trick from an old man that once used a piece of his belt to repair a connecting rod bearing on the side of the road. Just a few years ago I used to make gaskets for turbine steam pumps for a power boiler at a pulp mill, from gasket material that cost hundreds of dollars a foot. I guess the old fellow taught me something. One day a lion will appear from a Frosted Flake box. Bill H

  6. NICE Car!! Get it safe and dependable. Clean it up. Enjoy it. I think they are beautiful as is. Its easier to take it apart than to put it back together. Believe me I know. Work on what needs the most attention and leave it alone. More people will look at your unmolested surviver than the pristine cars at the shows. Bet you anything. Count the lookers. Bill H

  8. Very Nice!! I wish I still had the one I sold for 350.00. Mine had a 283, 4 speed, with 1957, 5 bolt hubs, with a perfect body. Nice job. Bill H
  9. I would say your valves are stuck. This is just a random guess. My Chrysler is like a Briggs and Stratton motor. All it needs is a spark and gas. After 11 years of sitting, you might have other issues. Dump some Marval Mystery oil or some diesel fuel in her and let it sit. If it were me, I would fill her up to the brim thru each of the spark plugs. What are you going to hurt??. Turn her over about twice a day, (with the plugs out), for a week and drain all the foreign petroleum products out of her. Then fill the crankcase with some cheap 30 wt and give her another try. If she ever starts the heat will free things up. It won't be pretty if it starts... with the residuals from the witches brew. Thats where I would start. My 2 cents, and / or suggestion. Bill H
  10. The two, flat, thin metal pieces on the right, with small nail holes, look like body, sheet metal that is tacked to the wooden frame work of the Durant. I have similar pieces that are tacked to the wooden frame, inside the doors, (rear door jambs), on my Chrysler CJ. I just looked at them and wondered if I should remove them and paint under them. The window shade brackets are valuable. A pair sold on U Pay, (EBay), not long ago for, like, 60.00. I think they were for a Plymouth. Good luck and NICE Durant!! Bill H
  11. I worry more about a black cat crossing the road in front of me. Left to right.....Right to left. One way is worse than the other. Don't know which. I always put 3 X's on my wind shield, with my finger, when a black cat crosses the road in front of me. The 3 X's are supposed to alleviate or cancel the hex. I believe in ghosts. I've seen a few and felt one next to me and lived in a house with one. I walk under ladders. Friday the 13th is just another day. Besides.... 13 is my lucky number. Bill H
  12. I've seen spark plugs used as the weight, in place of a lead sinker, for bottom fishing weights. I thought it was a good idea. Used spark plugs are free and they are the same basic shape and weight as a lead sinker. Just an observation. Bill H

  14. Go to a lawn mower repair shop or a salvage yard or a friend and get a plastic gas tank off a push lawn mower and run a neopreme gas line directly into the carburetor. Hang the plastic gas tank from something on the fire wall with a piece of wire. Bill Harmatuk
  15. Most people I talk to are more busy when they retire than they were when they were working. Every one says that "How did we ever find time to do all this stuff working a steady job"?? I am as busy as I have ever been. I Quit after 32 1/2 years at a paper mill. To keep it simple.... It wasn't fun any more. I got my Real Estate brokers license and now I work for my wife. Don't know if thats a good thing or not. She has only fired me twice. I sleep with the boss. Eat supper with the boss. Spend 24 hours a day with the boss. I haven't thrown away my steel toe shoes either. Life is good. Bill H
  16. I would do a compression check on each cylinder. If the motor pops back through the carburetor.... It is a symptom of a burnt valve. Good luck. Bill H
  17. I threw some potential E Bay items in the trash, rather than deal with the fees, pictures, listing, and the time it takes to box and mail. Postage ain't cheap. Time ain't cheap. The good stuff, (car parts), that are / were, too good to throw away, I sent to forum members..... Free of charge to them. Don't get me wrong, I have made some good money on E Pay but just too much hassle. I've been gathering some of my valuable junk for another round of E Pay. Bill H
  18. Is or was there a big difference in a Canadian made 1930 Chrysler CJ-6 and a USA built CJ-6?? Mechanically and or Body wise?? Just asking. Thanks in advance. Bill H

  20. Does anybody know if the company, Uvira, Inc. is still in business?? I only want to have my reflectors done right and according to old threads and Google Uvira is the place to have the job done. Is Uvira still requiring the headlight reflectors be nickel plated first before their process?? If so, where is a good place to have the reflectors nickel plated??   21. First of all, the body is a Fisher Body. There were not biscuits but rubber pads between the mounting flanges and the body to frame contact points. The rubber pads are probably 1 1/4 x 3 1/3 with a 3/8 hole in the middle. I can see on the chassis were the rubber pads have been for 82 years. Will get pictures. I have pads of different thicknesses. If I am not badly mistaken there are 18 body to frame bolts, total. There isn't really any rocket science in assembling the car but it is foolish not to ask when I know there are people that have walked down that road before. I have been a mechanic all my life and took an early retirement from Weyerhaeuser Paper Company where I was a Senior mechanic, welder and pipe fitter. I am basically looking for reference material. The car deserves to be assembled correctly. And it will. I'll start looking for all the reference material you guys have quoted. It would be nice to have something to look at. Buying paint today. Just waiting for the weather to break with a few days of 65 to 70 degrees. Thanks a million for all the recommendations. Bill H
  22. I know every inch of the CJ, along with every nut, bolt and screw, but I just want to put it back together correctly. Might save a lot of time with assembly and disassembly as I go. Thanks for the information. That is what I needed to know. I'll keep a look out for the two manuals. I think there is one available on EBay now. Thanks again. Bill Harmatuk
