  1. I remember that thread. Mistakes happen. Just be careful and ask questions if need be. Hopefully nobody making fun of learning like they did there.
  2. What ever you use be sure to use some kind of filter to catch the junk before it goes back in to the radiator. Pantyhose works well and is cheap and you can just throw it away.
  3. Maybe the inverse is true. By putting in chargers he is hoping people will stay longer and buy more. Most gas stations dont make much from gas but alot from soda and a coffee and chips.
  4. If your truly worried buy a plane ticket and lay you're own eyes on it. Make sure theres a bank near by that you can get the cash out of if the car is good. That's the only way to be sure.
  5. Another 12 volt conversion success story...
  6. Phaeton is what Buick called their 4door convertibles. Most called them convertible sedans. No idea why they chose to make it confusing.
  7. Those Lasalle's used the Olds I8 engine pretty much unchanged.
  8. Leaking oil is an old car's default state.
  9. Wow that would be alot of fun!!! Just tidy it up a bit and get it running and go to shows.
  10. Your going to tow a 1900's wood wagon with wood wheels on the street at modern speeds with an antique car? You're a brave one.
  11. John are those wire wheels under the cover's? Is it a radial?
  12. What is that picture showing? I dont see a broken wheel just a flat tire. I dont think anybody said radials go flat any easier. I thought we were talking about radials breaking wheels? Flat tires happen all the time. I have to agree that I have never seen a broken wheel from a radial. By the way I have used radials on my 56' Olds 98 since 1984. Four set's of them. Never any issues I just replace when they start to feel old. I know its not an older car like some others but the wheels are the same design as 40's cars maybe even some 30's. I dont know if I would put them on a car with wood wheels or anything like that but steel wheels should handle it no problem.
  13. Blackwalls would of been standard but whitewalls were common so go with what you like and it will be right. You're wheels should not need tubes if they are in good condition no matter what kind of tire you use. Correct size is probably 7.00-15 the 7.60's are a little too fat.
  14. Rust rust and rust. Sitting outside with the frame rails on the ground I would bet a cup of coffee that everything below the doors is rotten. These are not very expensive cars I bet you can find a decent one that will be closer to be running that is not too crazy expensive. Look at the way the rear axle is on the passenger side. Spring mounts gone? Frame damage? Thats more than just the car sitting at an angle. I would look at the bottom very carefully on a car that has been sitting like that for too long. A/C is aftermarket but common for the period.
  15. I wonder if the cloth was to help warm it up quicker in cold weather?
  16. The larger fender lights look more like those on the Franklin then on the Lasalle but I can see the headlights going either way.
  17. Would of been nice if they didnt store the cars in their pigeon cage.
  18. Holier than thou arguements have probly killed alot of clubs.
  19. Why not install one and report your results? Nobody here think's its a bad idea. Is it worth the cost and time? Find out and tell us. None of the people here are saying dont do it maybe only that it doesnt have enuf benefits to justify the cost. My Olds is now 63 years old and has 80something thousand miles. When I restored it in the 90's I pulled the pan and checked bearings but it didnt need a rebuild so I left it. Still no smoke or oil pressure problems. 30thousand miles later and all still ok. The question is if the wear that happens at start up is enuf to wear out a engine that doesnt get driven much and will a preluber system make a engine that will already last forever last even longer? I'm not planning on saving it for the next guy but it doesnt look like Im using it up too fast either.
  20. I cant believe nobody at the American auto makers ever stopped to think about what happens when gas is $5 a gallon again...... Oh thats right its America. Dont worry gas will always be nice and cheap. Keep selling the big trucks. Who needs to sell to a global marketplace when your in a global marketplace right?
  21. Isnt a early 216 splash lubricated? I can easily see over reving the engine causing damage and like the others are saying it probly isnt limited to just one rod. Their might be only one making noise but woudnt it suck to fix that one and start driving the car and then another one starts to go bad a short time later? Better safe than sorry right? Maybe the shop that did the engine could take a look for you and make sure its all in shape. Dont get discouraged. Everyone here has good intents. While it sounds like they are being hard on you they do want to make sure your engine gets fixed right and not just patched up which will lead to later problems. Stay with it (and us) and you will learn alot and your engine will be healthy again. After some time when your not upset about it all this will seem like common sense. Good luck!
