  1. or, possibly consider finding a rusted out 58 pontiac parts car, with an engine that turns. you'd have almost all the parts you'd need, and end up with a much more valuable car.
  2. as a wannabe old car buyer, i think you are making a good decision as to the 4 door approach. my personal favorite is the 4 door hardtop from that era. still a few around, and priced right. this forum was also a great choice, nearly all the info i've read here is spot on, and everyone seems to want newbies to succeed, best of luck.
  3. used to be anco or trico, now i think you might need to be fluent in chinese to name all the manufacturers.
  4. ever notice the badge "flex fuel" fuel on the newer cars? all it means is that the rubber parts that come in contact with the ethanol will not be damaged by it. it's really that simple, no special engine settings or injectors. just a different rubber compound.
  5. anything that close to lancaster should have great food. find an amish place
  6. how far we've come. my dad was a mechanic in the 30's and 40's and showed me a few old school tricks. his remedy for a squeeking fan belt was to hold a bar of soap against it with engine running. ironically, when he was in his 80's, he lost a finger tip while doing this very fix.
  7. BACK IN THE 60'S, US POOR KIDS WOULD BUY WHITEWALL TIRE PAINT AT PEP BOYS. I'M NOT SURE THEY MAKE IT ANYMORE, OR IF THEY DO, WHERE TO FIND IT, BUT AS A LAST RESORT? ooops, sorry about those caps.
  8. there is an outside shot the door jamb sticker is still there, it would have the weight on it.
  9. my all time favorite would have to be the extyremly rare 1967 impala ss427. it lists production as around 4600 units, i disagree. that year, i installed the trunk moulding on the chevy's at the wilmington plant. i used less than 2 dozen the whole year. assuming the day shift guy used about the same number, that makes it rare in my book. there is a little confusion about this because you could get a much more common super sport with a 427, but the one i'm talking about is a separate model.
  10. wow, my parents bought a 1957 chevy 210 4dr ht. i never saw another one. from your production figures,. i now see why.
  11. would changing the spindles help, or are they just as hard to find too?
  12. sad but true, china apparently has a calendar, and noticed it's the 21st century.they are getting so far ahead of us in clean energy, and have you wondered where all the older classic american cars have gone? just go down to the port and see what's being shipped overseas.
  13. i'm becoming a big fan of the 4dr hardtop too. think about it, was only made from around 55 thru 74, and an awful lot of them were cannibalized for the much more common 2drs. was kinda impressed with the cadillac escala concept, hope it makes it into production. we need a new car that's not boring.
  14. my father's moon touring car, not sure what year, late 20's i think
  15. its possible that the ridge that has formed has made you measurement faulty.
  16. a couple things to consider. have the front seal, and pretty much leak tested since that seal probably got kinda hot. i would consider conversion to 131 freon, and finally, unless you have a/c repair experience, i would go to a repudable repair professional to have the work done. good luck.
  17. even easier than a door panel, the glove box lock, usualy l just one easy clip
  18. and then there's the tried and true method, leave the nut on by a couple of threads, apply massive pressure with both knees, and tap the end of the steering shaft with a brass hammer.
  19. ONE OF THE BIGGEST NIGHTMARES OF MY OLDS MECHANIC CAREER.a 1974 olds ambulance that kept having weird electrical problems. first the reason it had them was because of the front shocks were worn out. what the hell you say? the front tires were hitting the front inner fenders, the genius body conversion company saw fit to run the main body wire harness on the UNDERSIDE of the inner fender, since it was plastic, nothing shorted out, but the insulation rubbed off the wires and everything connected to almost everything else.blow the horn and the flashing red lights would come on, stuff like that. ok, got all of that fixed and found out the voltage regulator had the gen putting out about 17 volts, causing tail light bulbs to blow. esay job to replace bulbs on a 98 sedan, but on ambulance, had to discharge the airconditioner, remove the entire rear a/c unit to get to the bulb. ah, the good old days. anyway, have fun with your restoration of the olds ambulance.
  20. i replaced a timing chain in my parents 1969 buick many years ago. the car had almost 200,000 miles on it, and it quit running while they were cruising down the road. i remember that job very well, i did it under a bridge by the C&D canel, took about 4 hours without any power tools.
  21. it's seems a little strange that the left ball joint was the first to wear out, usually, it's the right side(except in england).
  22. you were very fortunate. most cars that were rust-proofed in the 70's and there were a lot, due to dealers wanting to increase profit margins on imports, those that were sprayed were often the first to rust out. it seems the rustproofing sprayed into the inner panels often ran down the sides and plugged the drain holes causing water to build up in places it wouldn't ordinarily.
  23. and that my friends is why casinos use chips and not cash
  24. i love how people quote consumer reports. a couple things i noticed in their reviews. they hated the ford explorer sport (2 dr), but they loved the mazda navajo? both built on the same assy line. they also were not very fond of the ford t-bird back in the 80's, but loved the mercury cougar? i've seen a lot of things that pass for gospel over 40 plus years in various phases of the car business. like the 78 olds cutlass we got in at the dealership that had the prettiest, most perfectly assembled interior we got that whole year, too bad it was all for a buick regal, right down to the radio knobs! and there were the comments about fender rust on the honda civics? yep they would rust a little at the cak corner, but the part that concerned me was all of the front undercarrige that prompted a major recall. it seemed a few engines FELL OUT! while we're on the falling out engine theme, i acually saw it happen once on a corvair, i learned that wasn't all that un common.i guess having cars that look like they all came from the same cookie cutter is the price we pay today for all the auto makers past sins.
  25. when i was 14, dad gave me good news and bad news, got to drive a ford tractor on the road! bad news was a top speed of 12 mph.
