  1. the replacement for it is metal. also while you'r at it, replace that plastic fast idle cam
  2. looping the heater hose, as suggested earlier, looks like the best quick fix. cooling system sealer isn't much good for radiators or heater cores, but works well when the leak is between 2 machined surfaces
  3. didn't the Z28 engine have solid lifters? that would clear it up.
  4. i worked at GM in 1964. my job was installing side mldg clips. while we didn't build the electra there. those clips look a lot like the ones used on the 1965 impala rear quater. they were placed into the hole, then an air tool was placed into that oval slot. it had 2 fingers that expanded to secure the clip. so maybe you could install clips with something similar to snap ring pliers
  5. here's a hint for the novice: as you remove a part, thake a picture showing where it goes, and put all attaching parts in a labeled bag taped to that part. and yes, the fine folks in here are very helpful rather than judgemental.
  6. necessity is the mother of invention. back in the 70's, it seems the timing marks on ford v8's were impossible to read. so here's what we did, we would advance timing a little(with vac. advance disconnected), then power brake it until it started pinging, then back it off just a hair. if it cranked ok when hot, we were done. never had one come back with a problem.
  7. still have fond memories of working on a 1965 jetstar with a four speed in it. i forget what it was in for at delaware olds in the early 70's, but i do remember racing the metroliner on gov. printz blvd. on the road test afterwards
  8. no, it's slated to become a distribution site for some chinese company
  9. http://www.delawarebusinesstimes.com/former-gm-plant-at-boxwood-approved-for-demolition/?fbclid=IwAR2SyPjqre3qd8AY my very first job in 1964
  10. it's deja vu all over again for me. here in delaware we lost both GM and Chrysler plants. that was 15 years ago. there are less than 600,000 people in the state of delaware, so yeah, we felt it a little bit. as of today, both plants are still empty. another good point raised was that the chrysler was a main producer of tanks during world war 2. i guess if another conflict breaks out, we can buy them from china or mexico. why is it a nation that loves cars so much is so stupid about where we get them from?
  11. generally speaking, oil starvation affects the bottom end of the engine more than the cylinder walls. you might not need a re-bore.
  12. did chrysler still use manual choke in 1949?
  13. before you spend another nickel, get yourself a 12v test light
  14. when in doubt, you could drain oil, put in 1 quart short of full. that would give you correct place on dipstick, or as gm calls it, "bayonet gauge" to scribe a mark for "add". then add a quart to show you where the full mark should be.
  15. a quick test for the stop lights: take the 2 wires off the brake light switch and connect them together, the lights should work, and switch is bad. if they don't you have a bulb/wiring/ ground problem. also, it might sound too simple, but the tail lights have a separate fuse, have you checked that?
  16. i forget which, but it is a grounded wire, unhooked or broken wire or bad sending unit.
  17. the best tool for diagnossing vaccum problems on 60's buicks is a small hand opperated vaccum pump. how much are you getting at the main control, how much at the air door diaphram?you can have the answer in a minute or two. also, you can see if any amount of vaccum will even activate those diaphrams.
  18. thank you all for your comments. you have made it very clear.
  19. my father was a total car guy, which got me intrested in them and a learned a lot from him. he also raced stock cars in the 30's and 40's. he once was talking about some type of car that i never had heard of. i think the term reffered to a special race car suspension of that era. he used the term "underslung". i wonder if anyone in here can shed some light on that term. thank you all in advance.
  20. my first job was at the GM plant in 1964. the car carriers were on strike, so they hired about 20 of us to drive from the plant to a storage area. one day i got in a impala super sport and noticed it had a speedometer that read up to 200. after i parked it, i looked at the maroney label, and noticed it listed that the 283 was a special compression version. now i was really confused. turns out the car was an export model, the engine was a special LOW compression model, and the speedo was in kilometers.
  21. back in 1984, while i worked at a pontiac dealer, the new fiero took america by storm. there was a long waiting list for them, and the place went crazy when a truckload showed up. they were being sold for 2 grand over sticker if my memory is correct. a new salesman got so excited when his customer's ordered car arrived, he rushed for the phone to tell him of the arrival of his car. talk about bad timing, the future proud owner shhowed up just in time to visit the service department and see his car getting prepped. he also was just in time to watch it fall off the lift on it's side. long story short, with those plastic body panels, the guy still accepted the hard to get fiero.
  22. had a similar problem with an old packard, felt really dumb when i discovered it was supposed to be POSITIVE ground
  23. my brother's family recently sold his 1954 bel aire 2dr ht that was absolutly mint. it had power seat, and autronic eye. it was turquoise and white, and needed nothing. they sold it for less than 20 grand. remember that when you set your budget.
  24. i'll go with the chevy for perhaps an odd reason. have you ever heard of anyone proudly installing a 57 ford engine in their street rod? that being said my 57 bel aire was possibly the worst car i ever owned.i did however, make a pretty good profit on mine when i sold it 6 months after buying it in 1964. and while on the subject, whatever happened to putting the glove compartment in the middle of the dash?
