  1. when i worked at the GM plant in wilmington, one of my co-workers had a 1957 pontiac bonneville convertable as a daily driver. the 2 things i remember most about it was the fuel injection, but it was also the oldest car i ever saw with factory bucket seats
  2. i kinda question the 1961 post 2dr as a real ss. i always thought the 61 ss was a 2dr hardtop, and all had the 409. in 1962 you could get any powertrain combination with the super sport package, and you could get the 409 in the 11 model(biscane 2dr)
  3. theaztek wins by a nose over everything with a saturn nameplate on it. but pretty much auto vstyling kinda stopped, and everybody tried to make thier version of the 1986 ford taurus
  4. not sure where you are but there has been a 1957 ranchero sitting along the highway just south of greewood delaware, looks like it might be both restorable and for sale. it's been there for 10 years or so
  5. b oy do those things go nuts when they break, had a 1962 dodge phonex, and you never knew what was gonna happen when you pushed a button
  6. the diesel is one of the reasons i stopped turning wrenches at an olds dealer. first when the head gasket leaks, instead of smoking out the tailpipe, it bubbles into the coolant overflow tank. i've seen a couple the were towed in because the owner thought the transmission hand gone out, when real what happened was the crankshaft had broken in two(yes, they will still run if the timing chain still works. the other gm gas engine to diesel conversion was based on a pontiac block, and it worked very well
  7. 225 is the reason, also the lesabre was known as a sword
  8. back then, gm didn't want the regal body style going too fast so they put a speed limiter chip in the computor. the story was that the FBI had a few of them without the speed limiter. also, the gnx drivetrain was available in the firebird for i think, only one year. it also did not have the speed limiter because gm thought that body style could handle speeds over 120 mph.
  9. the story at the wilmington delaware plant was that NO 4 speed cars would be built there after the first one was crashed thru a garage door because it was started in gear with the pedal to the metal, so yes, the 4 speed would be very rare
  10. imho, when everybody else made them an ugly afterthought, buick put the tri-sheild logo on the 1968 wildcat rear side marker lights, and they looked very good. i'd have to say the lamest emblems were the olympic rings on the 80's centurys
  11. i'm suprised that z28 didn't have the fabulous crossfire injection or even tbi
  12. from the photos, looks more like a dealer installed heater, does it have vaccume tubes inside it??
  13. i'm still amazed at how many people think the 327 AMC engine is a chevy
  14. just for fun, put a gallon of gas in a normal size bucket. lite a match and throw in in (while standing a couple feet away). 99 times out of 100, the gas will put out the flame. i know it sounds crazy, but i've done it. also if you ever need to solder a gas tank, simply run a hose from the tailpipe to the gas filler and start the engine. after 4 or 5 minutes it will be perfectly safe to use a soldering iron on the tank.
  15. here in delaware, it's easy to pass a car on to some one. you can title it AND/OR. if someone is on the title that way it's their car if you croak off. no transfer fees, taxes or even worse, blood-sucking lawyers. they must sign on the title application (both parties) but only one signature is needed to sell it
  16. hey, you never know what the general is gonna name something. the official name for a dip stick is bayonet gauge
  17. the olds dealer where i worked had a selection of brass tumblers in the parts department. when we had to replace a lock cylinder, we would code it to the key that fit everything else, it's really not that difficult to do
  18. i'm not sure about 1981, but cars with the 16 digit vin numbers have that number stamped in multiple locations and they must match. also some states require police anti theft units to inspect cars with questionable titles.
  19. the 4 speed manuel in the wildcat gs was extremly rare. funny story: since the shift knob on the 4 speed was the same as the floor mounted automatic. a guy at the wilmington plant got in one to move it. the 1965 had no clutch safety switch, you guessed it, he drove it thru a overhead door at full throttle. after that, no more 4 speeds were built in wilmington plant
  20. just a thought. you can buy brand new black porcelain delaware plates and get a metal tag with just about any year you want on them. the number must be under 88999. no letters. in fact, you can buy and sell low tag numbers here in delaware. i've seen 2 digit numbers go for more than a hundred grand
  21. i'm soon to come into some money, so i thought a classic car might be a good way to have some fun, and actually make a decent investment. as a buick dealership mechanic in the late 60's , i've always admired a couple of cars. my list is down to two, first gen. riviera, or 66 thru 68 wildcat. the riv seems like an obvious choice, but as i look, the wildcat seems a lot harder to find any suggestions as to which might appreciate in value more? i plan to use the car as an occasional driver. i'd also like to know the vin code letter for the GM wilmington assembly plant. thanks in advance.
