Vanity pl8tes and their stories

Amphicar BUYER

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of really good vanity pl8tes on cars. I have one on mine and a web page devoted to Amphicar vanity pl8tes.

What does yours say and what is the story behind it?

Mine is "A WHAT"

"What kind of car is that?

"It's an Amphicar"

"A What?"

I had one on my 2nd '66 Caddy Ragtop - "HAD1B4"

On my '69 Bonneville ragtop - "RU4692" (Are you for 69 too?)

On my '95 Harley - "HD GIMP" (the plate frame is made from the 2 12" rods that held my spine together for 13 years. Talk about "personal"!)

I like this game, Ampliy. Years ago I ended up with an old 80 Chevy "wagon" as my part of the divorce settlement. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> It wasn't fast enough, so we put a Z28 350 in it and boy, would it surprise people. It got so bad the local cops would be calling Gloria and me by our first name as they walked up beside our car to give us one more ticket. As a matter of fact, I met the cop one day and just stopped before I passed him. I knew the procedure. Anyway our drivers started calling the old Chevy a "grocery getter"! As time went on we have gotten into Chevy 4 door sedans since you can no longer get the Coupes. Well, they weren't any faster, so out comes the catalog and the Freight trucks start bring these GM crate motors to the the Northern Neck. The first a 300hp job. At that time my wife, Gloria, starts calling this '84 Chevy a "bomber", no vanity plate yet. We just bought a '90 model Chevy last year, the last of the old body style, painted her a beautiful dark blue, chrome reverse wheels, wide whites, the works, except for the big white floppy hat. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> To go along with all of this, we got our first family car vanity plates, "Blue Bomber". Now the cars cool, the plates cool, but some "nut" in Northern Virginia decides to go on a killing spree, and as the cops are going mad looking for him, the word is out---"Look for a "90 model blue Chevy!!" Lipes!, Our car didn't leave the yard until they caught those guys. Pshew!, Be very careful what you ask for. Oh, we also had some trouble getting the tags from DMV, until we told DMV that I was in the service! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Of passing anything in sight. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Wayne

We once had an '88 Mustang GT. I tried to get "2FAST", "2FAST4U", but wound up with "2TUF4U" as the others had already been taken.

I don't have a vanity plate. But my favorite is one that says...

1STRIDE

It's on the car that the owner was brought home from the hospital in just after he was born, so it was his 1st Ride. Pretty cool!

It's a late 60s Dodge that stayed in the same family the whole time since it was brand new.

This may be unique, but I have three trailers and they have plates reading HVS 1, HVS 2, and HVS 3. This is not for vanity reasons but for a far more practical reason. If one of my trailers gets stolen, and trailers do get stolen, I will always know the tag number on it because they are numbered according to size with HVS 1 being on the biggie.

How many of you can tell without looking, what the tag number is on your TRAILER? Imagine trying to figure out what it is on three of them with each having a different renewal month. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I know. I could keep a list in my wallet, but this is more fun. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Interesting thread, John...

"VN-00080".

It is getting ratty from abuse by, from what I suspect are, 50/60-ish year old

c _ _ ards, excuse me, war protesters. Someone smeared chewing gum on it one time, it had urination stains on it one morning at a motel in Roanoke, VA, kicked about 2 times (one time I witnessed from a distance). It has been on 4 vehicles since PA started issuing them in 1987.

The state of Tn requires at least 3 characters on a personalized plate. I tried to get one with NO characters whatsoever, i.e. a blank plate. Denied.

My second choice was U812, denied. MNY-O-BRDY ( <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />) also denied. It just got to where they denied me no matter what even tho they could not figure out that last one ... at least not at that time.

My vehicles are registerd in a very low income hick county. As of 10 years ago i was not only the FIRST but also the ONLY registered ANTIQUE motorcycle plate in the county. It is not personalized but is ANT xxx on a 56 Cushman Eagle. How appropriate for a cushmna to have ANT as the first 3 letters.

Here in R.I., vanity plates are becoming extinct. They used to be $10.00 extra but a greedy governor wanted $60.00. So with the registration being a two year renewal that would have been $120.00 extra. That year I alone turned in 5 vanity plates. Now with antique plates costing $10.00 every 2 years, people opt that way instead.........Now the state is surly losing money.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Edited for Wayne...</span>

An otolaryngologist here (ear, nose and throat doctor) has "BGR PKR" on a big Mercedes. <span style="font-weight: bold">Booger Picker</span>

Kid down the street has a VW Beetle cabrio with "SPDR FUD". <span style="font-weight: bold">Spider Food</span>

Pontiac bud has a lot of fun with Tin Indian themed plates-"NDNUPRZG" <span style="font-weight: bold">"Indian Uprising"</span> on a TransAM, "WARWHOOP" on a tri-power Grand Prix and "HEAP BIG" on a Bonneville. His wife's Aurora has "NTRNLGTS" <span style="font-weight: bold">"Northern Lights" (Aurora Borealis)</span> since somebody already had "BOREALIS".

The Hurst/Olds wears "58THNDY" <span style="font-weight: bold">"58th Indy (500) <span style="font-weight: bold">"</span> </span> as it was a 1974 Indy 500 festival car, and I had "I8JAPAN" <span style="font-weight: bold">"I ate Japan"</span> on the Godzilla-sized 76 Ninety-Eight for several years. Wagon has "TBCORD" (Tobacco Road) on a Tobacco Heritage plate.

The Bravada has... what else? "RKTRDR"! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <span style="font-weight: bold">"Rocketraider"!</span>

And as bad as I hate to admit it, these ricer kids have some good ones. "FLUBYU", "WDETR" <span style="font-weight: bold">("Flew by you' and "Weedeater")</span> and "ZIPBANG" are all here, and one has an egg-yolk yellow Mazda with "CORNPOP".

I knew a guy once who told me that his urologist had "PPMD" on his Mercedes. I never saw it myself, just took his word for it.

An older friend of mine (73) bought a little red Mazda Miata. He wanted a clever vanity plate. I suggested "KIDAGN". He tells me he gets lots of attention with it.

Here in NJ, it is a one time fee for personalized

"Historic" plates. All "Historic" plates in NJ start with "QQ"

I have "QQ 72 MC" for my 72 Monte Carlo which I applied for

in 1998, right after the car became eligible (25 years old).

Since 1972 cars just became eligible, I figured I better apply

ASAP if I wanted a "72" on my plate. This combination was my first

choice of 3 submitted. I was fortunate to get it.

After waiting 8 weeks, and no response from the DMV in Trenton,

I received my cancelled check back with plate number written

on the check. I then knew that I was getting the plate number

I requested. The plates finally came in the mail 4 more

weeks later.

If I recall, the one time fee was an additional $100.00.

The paper registration is renewed every three years

thereafter.

My wife is in the garment industry, works on 7th Ave in

New York City. We once saw a plate "IDZINE", which we

guessed could have been a fashion designer. (I design).

Could have been a architect also......who knows.

Wayne, the best suggestion is to sound it out. IDZINE = I Design.

Or PPDOC = peepee doc

Or IXLR8 = I Excellerate. ate = 8

My one and only prestige plate was in Dallas. It was Anubus. Unfortunately someone already had ANUBYS so I spelled mine differently....I had a black on black 1990 Nissan Maxima GLX fully loaded with a recumbant black Jackel on the rear deck. I tried to design it so its head would bob but it did not work terribly well. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Would there be a way I could contact them? Or may somehow get a picture of the pl8s on the Amphis? I would love to add them to my Amphicar pl8 page. I think my last count was 30+- Amphicars with vanity pl8s.

Wayne ~ The trouble here is that Randall jus done had too much educatin for us simple folk. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Randall ~ When you tour 90 year old cars on the east coast and live in Wyoming 1800 miles away, trailers are a necessity. Trailer queens do not reside inside.

And Texas was too far away to ride my Cushman. My postwar stuff is driven to and from tours as far as 1500 miles away. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The best I recall is a Candy Apple Red Porche driven by a very attractive Blonde on I294 one day, she blasted past at 25mph over the limit, plate read "BEG4IT".
