Club coffee car project.

Our club is going to build a coffee van  / bbq van. For our rally’s and events we have.
Jude and I picked up the 29 DA dodge today from South Australia. We got 2 cars,3 engines 10 wire wheels, heaps of guards, 2 radiators one brand new core. And a heap of other bits and pieces. The body is in excellent shape with almost no rust.
The wheels are also in great shape and we have the drums to suit them. IMG_3389.jpeg.fbeaa0131be71b9f237f97857f1cd026.jpegIMG_3390.jpeg.34fc6ac4eb9edf885ecd57f0f1be1655.jpegAxles. IMG_3391.jpeg.2ee566540898baeb67048f55ffcfa514.jpegwire wheels IMG_3392.jpeg.25271ef4a346c8bd0516ee5d41b189d9.jpeg1 of 3 engines. IMG_3393.jpeg.7bc81bfe93e4778e04adc2af91b7781e.jpegtourer body complete with windshield bonnet and engine curtains. IMG_1914.jpeg.87d50b35e6f4aa37ae282a6e3cf9d357.jpegend result will hopefully be something like this.
Im hoping to create a bit of interest with club members to get on board and give a hand with the build. Basically anyone that wants to learn a thing or 2 and be part of it all.
Not sure how long it will take.

Devils advocate here...

Is it a Touring or a Phaeton? Looking at The Dodge Story and comparing it to the cars on page 67, it looks like it's a Phaeton.

If it's a Phaeton then there can't be but 1,000 or less of them produced.

If that's the case, then why not just hunt for a original late 20s panel body or complete a Phaeton project with what you have? I think the group would still learn just as much while respecting the heritage and history you'll be salvaging. After all, isn't that what we are trying to save as being members of the "club"?

Awesome project, and I commend you guys for taking this on.
Good luck and enjoy!

The other body is in a bit worse shape so it will probably be the one we sacrifice. Trying to find a panel body here would be very hard. The back section has to be built to health standards on the inside. So while it will look old outside the inside will have to be to what the health department standards are for serving a bbq and coffee.
I have built many food trucks for Melbourne so the inside will be done by myself. This is the other body IMG_3387.jpeg.b2562248a72764ffd819f1b84a1743c4.jpeg

As long as you keep that curved headlight bar I'll approve ;)

I've always wondered what a DA or U Dodge panel would look like with one instead of the straight bar.

Unloaded it all today and got a bit of hot wash cleaning done. The body and chassis are in great condition with not much work needed on the timber work either. IMG_3426.jpeg.d51493e5f1e72ea0bc4b20c6769f9724.jpegbody off ready for a clean.

Alan the fella we bought the 2 cars off was good enough to bring the other car and parts over from South Australia which is a good 9 hour drive from me.
I thought that was an extremely generous thing for him to do.
So we got another complete car and engine.
So from here I’ll work out what needs to be sand blasted and get that organised.
IMG_3707.jpeg.5296614fab2198f3c49dfd37cfc9ec83.jpegThere is 2 sets of hood irons and bows in this car. Rear guards are in excellent condition as to are the front guards.

We had a Saturday working bee on the car today. Grant and Rich came over and we got stuck into pulling it all apart ready for sand blasting.
IMG_3982.jpeg.a5ccdbe1d3e4fda2dc61aff5c57c503a.jpegGot the chassis up on the hoist so us old bastards don’t have to bend to much.
IMG_3983.jpeg.24c294c386b63d90233a318e6fe20984.jpegGrant giving the Diff a hot wash.
IMG_3984.jpeg.364a3f57eda1e263dc168f563987de6c.jpegwe gave the gearbox a good clean and it is In unbelievable condition so it got some fresh oil and will be buttoned back up.
IMG_3986.jpeg.82143077921cc99bc6072be0962eebf2.jpegDukes inspecting the chassis to make sure we got everything of ok. This is also in great shape and after a sand blast it will be painted. No repairs needed. IMG_3985.jpeg.2a713e015fac08561e28f6e1abaf774c.jpegAll the chassis parts.
IMG_3987.jpeg.fa3d2754bb3e65c90105a669d9f84f40.jpegwe gave the hinges a good soaking of MDW40 and they were freed up by the afternoon.
Our sandblaster is pretty busy so hopefully he squeeze us in soon. IMG_3988.jpeg.aced4cc380a05971741739b7bbec3cac.jpegAll the guard’s ready for blasting. The need a bit of repair.
I will make brand new running boards.

The whole car is amazingly good Doug. The guy we got it of thinks the milage is close to original. 47,000. He thinks something happened to the engine at that mileage and it was parked up into a shed and left. Looking at the condition of some parts I think he’s not far wrong.

Our sandblaster turned up this morning and did all the blasting for me today.
All the parts are in amazing condition.
IMG_4400.jpeg.0fd8379e022a87585b54ad1a6b0d3229.jpegBeautiful day for it in the cow paddock. The cows were all pretty interested in the car until he started and then they spent the rest of the day over the other side.
IMG_4402.jpeg.9daf79d7840fd1ccbb58110f58d64e97.jpegChassis ready for a coat of etch primer. IMG_4405.jpeg.35429239029a9685b3aab5ac3c2078a6.jpegIMG_4406.jpeg.951c00817896a470e5f183d29bf4efd8.jpegwill probably only use the axles and tailshaft out of this diff. Once I get the wheel of it’s not coming off with out a fight. IMG_4407.jpeg.9834c3c2c2dd014b8ffc97202d2090b8.jpegI managed to get 5 really good wheels out of the 10 we got with the car. IMG_4408.jpeg.6d3bc7e41274cd468b904a893fb51a30.jpegI will give these another coat of high build primer and the give them a good sand, before topcoat. They will be a great set of wheels for the car. IMG_4413.jpeg.872bbf662db3ef5c6280c7451d581470.jpegNo repairs are needed on the cowl, and I’ve given all the old timber a runny coat of epoxy resin. It all looked a little dry but with the resin soaked in it will be all good again. 72154435817__9B6EC546-96FB-42CA-887B-33395098A698.fullsizerender.jpeg.381cd7d94aabd79a0d3f9a2a25eaae53.jpeg

The guards will need some work to get them right. I’m going to put the spare into the left hand side guard I think at this stage. I’ve just got to see what will work the best.

Cowl looks good, Matt. In the US a wire wheeled DA would have dual side mounts.

It’s in amazing shape Doug, I do have the other guard but it’s in very average shape so I’m just going with the one spare. It will also keep the weight down with everything that’s going into it.

Yes I’ve got a bit of an idea.
the back will have 3 lift up doors, the coffee machine will be on the left side and the bbq will slide out the back.
the right side will be sinks and a stainless steel prep bench. That’s the plan at this stage anyway.
IMG_3409.jpeg.405c35a9d807534df22313451a5e491b.jpegI’m hoping it will end up a bit like this. Same colour also.

Great club project, I'm surprised we don't hear of more club projects like these. I realize someone has to take the initiative and offer/find a space to do it all (at least 600 ft sq for 6-12 months)), and that is often a challenge. Thanks for taking this on and keeping us posted.

I'm sure the facts you pointed out have much to do with it, but I too would like to see more of these club projects.

Here's an idea I found while doing some research that I believe would draw a lot of interest into the DBC, especially for the mid to late 1930s crowd. Since Coke has had such a universal appeal I believe it would be something maybe even the Corporation could get behind for funding.

@Mattml430

can you maybe touch on ideas for funding that you may have came across incase others are willing to take up that mantel?

So far we have my paint supply guys looking at doing something for us. I want to see if the tyre guys will help out in some way. We have a couple of old tyre suppliers in Melbourne. We will have a few working bees on the car where club members can come and give a hand. Dennis our local antique bearing supplier is going to supply us with all new bearings and bushes which is fantastic.
When it comes to building the back section I’ll take a few weeks off and get it knocked over.

$15 per cup?

Yes our $65 a year membership certainly goes a long way. We all get very good value for money in our club.
We won’t be charging for coffee or anything out of the van but personally I think it should be a gold coin donation to contribute to the cost of running it. So 1 or $2 in our country.

I think it was Churchill who said

NEVER WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW

Around the world we have clubs and groups of all persuasions relying on very skilled and dedicated but some times unappreciated members to keep everything working.

There are three types of people.

Those who make things happen

Those who watch what happens

Those who wonder what just happened

Thank you Matt for supplying the majority of the project without fanfare.

Grant Rich and I have been spending a couple of Saturdays on getting the axles ready to fit them up to the chassis. The club is organising a working bee on the car in April so we have been trying to get a bit of the time consuming stuff done. The rear axle is almost back together and the brake shoes are going off to be relined. I actually machined the rear drums today so the brake guy will fit the linings to each drum for us.
IMG_5550.jpeg.5f951cab3b7ff9371d14f08fd6127975.jpegAlso machine the rear seal carrier to fit a modern seal.
IMG_5556.jpeg.04f885bb7fcdc7c82a5ab5d4e2232798.jpegGrant got all the rear backing plates sandblasted and they came up like new.
Some pics of before we started here. IMG_5532.jpeg.ba943d8eb4dd067cba5ac96503502ffa.jpegIMG_5534.jpeg.413cb3f8a002bf82bf3dbbb6cc3e21b2.jpegThe cylinders came apart ok and cleaned up well.
The engine is almost completely apart now after a mammoth job getting the pistons out.
IMG_5403.jpeg.f1f5f3979a9c5411fd270a81657c909e.jpeg
Some of the pistons may need some JB weld to get them back together. They were the most stuck pistons I’ve ever come across  IMG_5404.jpeg.93773f067b4c906a9bccfb68c37afe6d.jpeg

I managed to get all the drums machined today and the rest of the shoes and backing plates blasted.
IMG_5561.jpeg.8bbebb68b8dd32778e44f81db41a2550.jpegThey came apart ok and just need to do the brake cylinders.
IMG_5569.jpeg.230213a6dd2c510aeb2ab3183944e2ea.jpegGrant got the rears done on Saturday and the I finished the fronts today.
I managed to make up one good master cylinder up out of the 2 we had. The inside of on was just mush.
IMG_5566.jpeg.3df18ff2ec4f19b7f437a68c9896d833.jpegThis actually cleaned up ok.
IMG_5567.jpeg.6c87eeb02ace4ba39abf8ac8cad15432.jpeg
This and the brakes are going in tomorrow to be redone. The master cylinder will get a new stainless steel sleeve and a new kit put through it.
