  1. Welcome fellow Aussie! Where abouts are you located? We're in Melbourne
  2. I generally don't grease or oil anything that's not listed in the book, as I don't know where it might end up
  3. Is it really that much of a big deal? The cars are typically being used so infrequently that you’re probably not going to wear it out any time soon vs potential damage to your gears
  4. when I meant steam what I was talking about was in terms of driving experience not that it used steam
  5. That doesn’t sound anything like my 22 cads so I’m not sure it’s actually working properly (I think it’s the same unit to the 1915 and very similar setup to the Buick) You hear a very definitive clicking sound that would be about as loud as a socket ratchet. When you press the starter it it groans a bit deep down (if the gears mesh otherwise a clunky and you take your foot off and try again) then it fires and you hear it spinning very rapidly as it disconnects and slows down when the motor is running. Mine fires with about 1 second from cold and instantly when it’s been running. It’s a bit easier to see what’s going on the cads because it’s right on top of the motor I’m out of town for a few days but can grab you a video in good quality if that would assist you
  6. Curious if anyone has any experience driving the “first hybrid” the Owen Magnetic? Does it just drive like a normal car from the period or is it a different beast all together. I’m imagining some what of a cross between a steam and normal petrol engine for the driving experience. I know Jay Leno has one but I don’t think he’s done a video on it. there is also one list for sale in Hemmings which looks interesting (bit out of my league!) https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/owen-magnetic/unspecified/2335978.html
  7. On my Missouri title, it uses VIN and Chassis number interchangeably though technically my car is “matching numbers” lol
  8. I've bought more than my fair share of caps from ebay that haven't been measured properly 😐
  9. My 22 cad has an oil can on the firewall next to the data plate
  10. The worst experience I had was changing a flat in peak hour in a no standing zone with trams (light rail) in the lane next to me (in Melbourne trams and car share the road) and it was on a hill... in the rain
  11. We were up at Tocumwal on Tuesday and it’s incredibly dry at the moment, it’s not surprising the potential for damage
  12. My early ninties honda was a 'modern' style jack which basically expanded as a diamond on a central screw - was great except for the fact it slipped on the screw constantly and was unsafe as anythign
  13. Not sure if it's made the news in the US, but two of our states here (New South Wales and Queensland) are currently experiencing some extremely challenging wildfires (or bushfires to us aussies) I know we have some members that potentially live in the affected regions, so hopefully everyone is remaining safe!
  14. yep my cad doesn’t need choke to start, it fires within a second and if it’s been running it starts the second you touch the starter it also leaks fuel like crazy when stopped (tank is still pressurised) but given they literally put a drain under the carb I suspect it always did. I wonder if I could put a catch can on the end of the drains to stop it going on the ground
  15. That’s an interesting theory, I’ll see if I can hear it with a stethoscope
  16. BMW ruined the latest iteration of the 1 series by going FWD, now it's just the same as everyone else but more expensive.... My 125i will do 0-60 in about 6 seconds and get 40 mpg highway - fantastic little car. Though I"m not sure that my wife will approve my next car being another hot hatch 🤐
  17. The bottlebrush did ok in the recent hot weather but the Rose is looking a bit sad
  18. My brother has a mercedes CLA AMG, and it's certainly no-where near as practical as a station wagon (*cough* shooting break) was back in the day - I doubt it really fits that much more practically than the sedan variants I had a Volve XC90 as a rental in the UK, that was certainly an interesting experience taking it down small country lanes
  19. I've recently finished overhauling my 1922 Cadillac, and I can believe it would reach something in the vicinity of 60mph (they claimed 75mph top speed but I very much doubt that) but there is absolutely zero need to push it that hard. Around the local streets, I wouldn't be able to accelerate much faster in my modern car owing to the amount of parked cars and other stuff going on. Given the very limited data most people have, it's very hard to know what normal sounds or feels like as well - we've seen plenty of cars on tours that look fancy but don't run right. I think the other thing to think about is what body style is the most practical, open cars can be good but not as practical (or affordable) as the closed cars. The caddy has plenty of lockable storage built in, which should make it good for rallys. What I wasn't expecting is that my 1922 Cadillac feels quite different from the 26 Buick, so again benchmarking what's normal is quite challenging. Buick made some great cars in that time period and are typically much more affordable than the cad's and other luxury marques, so they're also worth looking at. Australian cars have Holden manufactured bodies which seemed to have a higher grade interior (e.g blackwood dashes), I suspect it's because Cadillac's were so expensive at the time so they were positioned as a luxury brand.
  20. Penrite make high zinc content oils, which I believe you can buy from restoration supply co https://www.penriteoil.com.au/applications/speciality/vintage-classic It's pretty much a religious debate about what's best for your vehicle, about the only thing people generally agree on is that modern stuff is better than what they had in the day
  21. It appears to have auto corrected Essex to Excess
  22. I wouldn't touch it unless you've spoken to your insurance company already - my policy has specific sections on parts etc following an accident
  23. Glad you're ok! I second the calls here to talk to your insurance company, let them deal with the hassle I'm actually impressed with how little damage there is as well
  24. The fan is driven off the camshaft directly
