1937hd45
Mike, Right after Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was released both cars, the running one and the stunt flying car were bought by AACA member George Button. At the time we all thought he was nuts for paying $35,000.00 for the pair. I think the pair was split up and they are in private museums now. There were real Chitty Chitty race cars in the 1920's, Mercedes chassis with Zeppelin engines built by Count Zbrowski. Do a Google search on all the stuff that pops up here, both Text and Image searches and you'll be up to speed with the rest of the gang. My all time favorite car movie is "The Roar of The Croud" with James Cagney. It is the up and down story of a 1930's race car driver using real racers and real racing footage. Dave@Moon
Nobody believes me when I say this, but the original The Love Bug from 1968 was the best car movie ever made, though inadvertently. If you watch the background footage from Riverside, Sears Point and several other road courses used as race venues in the movie the cars are simply amazing. They're full of race specials that had passed down to club racing by 1967/68. I also recently posted Speedy (1928) by Harold Lloyd as a great car movie ( The Best Car Movie Ever!). Large parts of it are shot on the streets of uptown New York City, and it's fascinating to see how many elite cars are there a that time (and how few Model T's!). Both movies contain literally hundreds of cars that are today extremely rare/valuable.
Paul Dobbin
Now there is only one really great answer to that question.Remember we as a club like to restore and drive really old cars, so that favorite movie title can go to only one movie."Two Tars", a Laurel & Hardy film made right before talkies. They destroy about 2 dozen cars in a halarious story for the Two Tars (sailors)played by Laurel & Hardy. The whole thing is them trying to impree two girls. If you've seen it, you must agree.Great movie to show at local club meetings and try to identify all the wreckage. That's my VOTE.Paul
Guest mike burgess
Well Dave I think that "The Love Bug" was a great movie to. I always dreamed about racing like they did.I also liked "The California Kid".
Guest SalG (Sal Grenci)
I liked Driving Miss Daisy, and Smokey and the Bandit. On TV the Duke boys and General Lee were interesting for the chases. But, my all time TV car show was The Waltons, since we have a 29 pickup in the family and the over all family nature of the show.
R W Burgess
Geez guys, I come home after two rough days, my youngest son has taken over the forum, giving out web site info I don't even know about. And you guys are leading him on? Hey those movies he has watched are mine, uuh, my favorite movies, that is. If you fellows haven't noticed he's taken a liking to my '32 Ford, and let's just say it's not exactly "stock"?? I swear I'll have to start testing my food for unhealthy "additives". That's ok though, he plays a mean sax. We're going out to dinner to do a little karaoke. Gotta keep up with the little guy. Wayne

24T42
Mike,Welcome to the forum. I am sure you be an asset. I was quite impressed with you at Philadelphia this year with your enthusiasm and eagerness to help the other Junior members. Job well done.I can not resist a plug for the Junior AACA web page. If you want to find out more about the Chitty Chitty Bang cars, go to the section 'Star Cars'. There were actually 4 cars produced. In 'Star Cars' we try to highlighting cars that became stars in their own right. Currently we are highlightly the Chitty car, the Batmobile, General Lee (from the Dukes of Hazard), and the Love Bug. I have included a lot of information about the car and movie/TV show. More to come ....While you are there - stop by the section called '1st Cars'. I have added Earl and Judy's 1939 Buick as it appeared on the cover of this issue of the Antique Automobile. Enjoy!!!!!!!!! Junior Web Page! stock_steve
Good topic Mike. Let's see... Having become a "confirmed" VW enthusiast in my mid-20s' I wish I could say that the Love Bug movies were my all-time favorites car movies (and they certainly rank right up there), but for a car movie that really had a life-long impact on me, I have to say Bullitt is at or near the top; I remember my dad taking me to see it, and how amazing I thought it was at the time; Ford is very smart to be attempting to capture some of that "Bullitt Magic" again lately. And like Doug, I also think American Graffitti is also another all-time-greatest car movie; it came out when I was in high school, which I think is another of those "formative" times on one's life, and it's effect has stayed with me over the years. stock_steve
P.S.: A good friend has always mentioned the (original) "Italian Job" as an all-time favorite car movie. I've seen bits of the original, but haven't seen the "remake" yet (with the modern Minis), so don't have much of an opinion on either. Some good video store ideas for the Christmas break for me??? Guest AlK
Hey guys: I have one that I will bet no one has ever heard of, but if you want a copy, supply me with a tape and I will get it to you. CARS TO DIE FOR!!!!It is a 1956 B-flick called HOT CARS. Outside of some really gorgeous cars 55 chevy conv. 56 desoto 55 plymouth, a 50's cadillac or 2 it also starred Joi Lansing(A Jayne Mansfield look-a-like(literally). Another one was "Big Wheel" with Mickey Rooney.
tomchaney
I have always liked "The Great Race" even though, as was pointed out, the main cars were studio constructions. There were some "real" cars, though, sprinkled throughout. "Topper" also comes to mind. And, don't forget "Genevieve" a British film about the London-Brighton run. BTW: One of Professor Fate's cars is displayed at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles (several were constructed...this is an operable one.) You can go here to see the Leslie Special CLICK HERE FOR THE LESLIE SPECIAL I read recently that this car was to undergo a complete restoration, but I don't remember the details or where I read it. Dynaflash8
I thought I answered this one once before. Two movies that had cars that I remember the best and liked the best did of course have 1939 Buick convertibles in them. One was Bernadine with Pat Boone where they were driving a black 39 Buick convertible. The other was in 1956 and called "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" and in it was featured a green 1939 Buick convertible. I think that one starred Jayne Mansfield.
