Hard to part with 1931 Devaux sedan, RARE Gem, flathead 6 Continental motor factory built by Hall company-3-speed trans - runs and drives great for a 1931.  This car was only produced for 1 year 4808 was the total and this 1 is 4106.   It’s a beautiful car to drive on the road and tends to be a showstopper when you're driving it around, the 6-cylinder motor was designed by Continental Motor Co.  This came out of a museum in New Mexico, all lights work, road worthy.   This is an investment you can count on.  This car was designed and manufactured by Norman DeVaux, former president, general manager, and half owner of Pacific coast factory of Chevrolet Motor Company, famed for building extra value in his motor cars.  This is an exceptional motor car rated at 70-80 miles per hour in the day.  RARE gem with awesome history and it could be yours.

Ten to fifteen years ago, there was a DeVaux specialist

who took his car(s) to Hershey.  Then he passed on,

and I remember his cars being offered for sale.

 

Even many serious collectors today aren't familiar

with the DeVaux.

The DeVaux was the reason that Continental Beacon came to be!   Timing is everything. even at a low price, folks who could afford a new car in 1931 weren't going to take a chance on an unknown make.

I have a 31 DeVaux 4 door sedan that we have owned since 1988.   Bought it from a rancher in Wyoming that purchased it new in 1936 in Belle Fourche, SD.    Story is that it sat on the dealership lot in Belle until 1936 because the company went out of business and nobody wanted a car that there wasn't support for.   The owner that I purchased the car from said the salesman came out to the ranch one day trying to sell the car.  Ted, the owner, mentioned his dad jokingly told the salesman if the car could clime the hill in high gear out of the ranch house area, he would buy the car.   Well it did and his dad bought the car.   The kids then drove the car back and forth to school and eventually it sat at the airport in Belle Fourche for transportation around town when the family flew to town.   Town was about 45 to 50 miles over some pretty rough roads, but only about a 20 min flight.   Then in later years it went back to the ranch and just sat near the airplane hanger when I found it in the mid 80's.   We did a complete restoration in 88 and take it to car shows where the "experts" are always amazed buy the car the "never heard of"    Nice car but the achilles heal is the rear axle ratio,  at 35 its starting the struggle.

I believe Norman Devaux was the fellow who bought the Cord 810/812 tooling after they stopped production.  He wanted to build a more economical rear drive version.  He shopped his idea around without much success until Hupmobile finally made a deal with him, designed and started to build the Skylark as a last gasp effort at staying in business.  Hupp only produced about 28 cars with Hayes bodies before they finally closed their doors.  They showed the car at various auto shows and had many thousand orders, but due to the complexity of the body and resulting excessive hand work could not produce the car in any significant numbers.  In stepped Graham who I believe turned him down previously.  They then produced the Hollywood, and the bulk of the 300 ish Skylarks side by side at the Graham plant, until they too closed their doors.

I wonder if an overdrive could be installed.I thought of doing it on my old Buick with a 4:33 rear end but it's fine for around town.

Does anyone know the status of this car? I ask because I recently posted on the aaca forums about parts that I need for my 1931 DeVaux and I received a email from someone saying they own this car and they are parting it out. Seems strange that he would part out such a nice car. Makes me leery to do business with him without doing some research first.

Sounds like a scam to me. I put a want ad on a pontiac forum a year ago. Recently had a person send me a pm asking if I was still looking for parts. Said he was parting out his car and could offer just about anything. Then he sent me a pic of a beautifully restored trans am that would sell easily for $40k+. I told him I thought it was odd he was parting out such a nice car. His response was that medical issues were forcing him a quick sale. I may be wrong but I think you could make money quicker selling the car as a whole compared to parting it out!! I then called him out as being a scammer and asked for him to send me a pic of himself standing in front of the car holding a handwritten note. Never heard back.

Even more so of a scam with this given the rarity.

That respondent is ABSOLUTELY a scammer!  Don't

give him a nickel.  If he is a forum member with a user-name,

report him to the moderators and they will ban him.

names, and usually common ones, I have noticed.

 

The scammer in his message to you tries to counterfeit

a good name by saying "God bless."

One happy thought for all the legitimate car enthusiasts:

Criminals will be punished for their bad deeds, even if

human justice doesn't catch them.  They can never escape.

OMG, that is almost the exact same response as was sent to me. 

JH, if youre not a member you should sign on up and put this car in the restoration thread. Looks like a great project of a rare auto. I had a best friend 50 years ago named Chris, same last name. He moved away as his dad was in the Navy.

Also, I don’t believe I have any family with the first name Chris, but who knows. My grandfather was from Nebraska and there are some Homan’s around there that I’ve never met.
