I'm worried that your posts may increase the suicide rate of DB enthusiasts when we realise what under skilled under achievers we are.

I think it's high time you gave some bad advice, ask some stupid questions and display some shoddy workmanship.

You might be just in time Nat I’m about to try and Nickle plate this radiator surround.
IMG_4743.jpeg.e34843114a24f8e4d9dee12c4305b1ff.jpegIt’s taken a few hours to get all the pitting out, so I hope I don’t stuff it up. 🤞🏻

IMG_4741.jpeg.ad37d6edb2f9c26db378b1f9c4e68993.jpegThose little suckers seem to be so deep into the steel but they are probably only a few thou deep.
IMG_4742.jpeg.bbb88278fe82d6ee3fe06b1b6c58bee8.jpegSanded down to 500g.

Don’t worry Nat everyone is good at something there’s plenty of things I’m useless at. The girls could throw a ball further than me at school and I spent more time on the reserves  bench than I ever did playing any sport. I’ve been very lucky to have some good teachers. Stay posted because there could be some disasters plating the radiator. 😂🤣IMG_4744.jpeg.16c9b0ba95447988d6f4162322633ca5.jpegThis is how much sandpaper gets used to get it like that.
start with 80 on a soft 6” sanding pad on a sander polisher. Then with

120

180

320

500

1000  foam backed to finish. With an orbital sander.

A good teacher is great but you do need to be a good student, based on what we see, we have a good teacher, a great student and an amazing amount of really hard work.

Huge Emphasis on the hard work.

You exemplify the six “Ps”

Proper preparation prevents P*** poor performance

No it’s going to be black. I sand blasted it this morning and it has a few holes in it so it would be almost impossible to Nickle it.
the top half is good but the bottom it where the trouble is. It was originally black on this car anyway.

Just thought you may be going whole hog. I have not seen anyone nickel the top saddles, thought you may do the windshield too.

If the windshield was in better condition I probably would have. The top saddles were originally nickel. Do you know where I can get the rubber for them Doug. It’s like a T section rubber

Rubbers for the saddles are available from Peter Jackson (Old Era Services).  He made patterns from originals I gave him many years ago.  They consist of half circles (top and bottom) held in place by protrusions which fit into the holes in the front section. The white rubbers are just visible in the attached image.

Make them from leather? It forms nicely when hot and wet.

I thought about that but what about the T section that holds it in.
You’ve done well to chinks me Nat😂🤣. I did a test piece the same size/shape of the radiator and it nickel plated ok but I had a lot of grief with the copper coat. It kept on falling off. Bit confused with it all but I shut it all down and walked away from it all. I try again on Monday. IMG_4747.jpeg.8952c8b9ab82f3f0ad462f142dcd040d.jpegThis was my little test piece. It actually Nickel plated that nice it looked finished but would not last without the protection of the copper coat. I won’t let it bet me.

I thought you could could use a sample of bad advice.

I don't know what the T section consists of or what purpose it serves.  If you can show me an image or two I might offer another hairbrained idea or two.

It’s definitely appreciated 😂😂

90% of the painting is finished so now the fun part of months of work putting it all back together. From here on it’s a great part of a restoration seeing it all come together.
IMG_4780.jpeg.299f0cfdccb5457f4a2ade1d21521ff4.jpegThe body is loosely bolted on so I can get the side skirts on after I fit the kick plates. Everything has been pre fitted so it should all go back together nicely I hope.
Guards and running boards will start going on tomorrow.

Matt, please rotate the starter/generator so that the fuse faces up as per usual.  Picky?  Moi?😁

Copy Engine.jpg

Not sure why Bill put it like that when he fitted it after building the engine.
I’ll get on to it. 😉👍

Matt, just wondering if all the lil' nose pickers have had a chance to put fingerprints on your fresh paint?

Hahaha they know better than to go within 3 feet of any cars that pop has or is working on.
Had to make all the piping for the guards and fit the rear guard this morning while I was waiting for them all to wake up, before I could start mowing.

I like those stone guards. I don't think we had them here.

Beautiful aren’t they. I have taken some patterns of them because I liked them so much.
IMG_4787.jpeg.87457dadfef044bcd03fd68a1d9bfbe4.jpegthe kick plate look good to. Do you guys have them. IMG_4785.jpeg.9ea8ff57a232c3d1a59c82cf14129d85.jpeg

Thanks Norm, they were pretty much of the gun I gave them a quick 3000 rub just to remove any peel that was there. I spray with 30% reducer and normal hardener so it has plenty of time to flow out.

Spent a relaxed hour or more reading this post. Amazing skills and talent shown here. Looking forward to seeing it at the finish line.

cheers

Rodney 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Thanks Rodney I’m happy you’ve enjoyed it. It will really come together in the next month. It’s due to go to the upholster at the end of January so best I pull my finger out and get to it.

Matt and others, take a look up in the general section for the DB video on utube for the proper way to paint a DB. I especially like the guy that is beefy enough to hold a crank shaft from the end by a pair of tongs to place it in the forge while it is red hot. There's a good story how this video was brought out from down under. A friend is responsible for saving it.

The video brings up a lot of questions. The cars in this video appear to be maybe 1916 or 17. One we have discussed is when were the engines painted. If anyone has a clue I would like to hear it. Another video shows about 8 engine blocks on a pallet having the head surface machined at one time. I think they appear bare at that point. There is a similar video playing at AACA museum 24 7 on a tv in the DBC owned station wagon.
