I wonder if that mileage and the paint are original?  The dash ornamentation looks to be Bakelite or plastic and appears to be in suprisingly good condition if it was a New Mexico car.  Lots of summer heat in that area...

Even though the car needs upholstery work, I think it could really benefit from some time spent polishing up all that interior metal and dash components.

This car is a mix of 120, 160, and Henney parts.  I think it is a 120 with 160 bumpers, trunk script, steering wheel and Henney hood side pieces.  Not making it a terrible car, just what it is.

The dash plastic was originally Tenite and is reproduced.

Though I am not a Packard aficionado I do like this model.  It does need upholstery work but I am not sure about the meaning of the sellers comments about the headliner and wind lace. A good part of the headliner looks great but there is one photo of the left rear of the headliner where it meets the rear seatback that show water stains. The pictures don't show the left side of the car which makes me very suspicious.  So it definitely needs body work and paint

Well now, this is very interesting.  Car is relisted with a $3,000 price drop.  But new ad includes more honest pictures this time around.  Car looks much rougher than the first pictures posted.   Also pictures of the driver's side which were omitted in the previous ad.  This kind of changes things, yes?

Listing states car was used by a funeral home but in my experience they don't use too many coupes.

What is that box on the fender? I've never seen that before. I think you are correct about coupes and funeral homes, perhaps it was the mortician's and that box had his tools for "house calls"?

That box is a truly ugly addition to the car.  Wonder if it unbolts and leaves a few small holes to patch or if the hole in the fender is large...  easy to replace the entire fender but a significant value deduction for the work required

Spoke with seller and he sent this additional picture of the interior of the fender box.  Dimensions are 26" deep at the front, 23" deep at the rear, 10" wide, 14" long.

Deeper than I'd thought and clearly a purpose built device, but to what purpose is anyone's guess.

If it WAS connected with funeral home, I'd rather not know!

It is designed to hold a “church truck”.

A church truck is the accordion folding wheeled support that is expanded to support a casket.
It’s the device that gives wheels to a casket during a funeral.

Likely you all have seen one in use but never knew the correct name for it.

It seems odd they would have a car dedicated to this one purpose and build an additional storage compartment for it when the trunk has more than adequate space.

Wouldn't the church truck normally fit in the hearse?

I suspect it’s because these random pieces were removed from a Henney hearse and for some reason were bolted on to this poor coupe in the 50s.

Jim, you are probably right. Not all funeral homes serve the rich and affluent. Some homes, like their "customers", were squeezed financially. Also, if a needed vehicle was replaced during or shortly after the war, when stocks were severely limited, they may have had to improvise.

So, if I had said, "That's where they keep the beir", you guys would have thought I just couldn't spell, right?

Maybe you've hit on something Hudsy...a bag of ice in the bottom and a couple of six packs on top....

And with the water dripping from under the car everyone would think you were riding in air conditioned comfort!

Or possibly to retrieve the deceased from location of passing and transport to Funeral Home,

Then later use a hearse post funeral?

These days they tend to use an unmarked van for that purpose.
