Seller's Description:

This is a beautiful 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Town and Country Wagon. Kept in good condition! ONE OF ONLY 1,135 EVER BUILT!

Chrysler christened the 1956 model year's design "PowerStyle," a product of prolific Chrysler designer Virgil Exner. The New Yorker gained a new mesh grille, leather seats, pushbutton PowerFlite selector, and a 354 cubic inch Hemi V8 with 280 hp (209 kW). Also new for 1956, Chrysler introduced an under-dash mounted 16 2/3 rpm record player, dubbed the “Highway Hi-Fi”, manufactured by CBS Electronics. A two way switch in the dash changed the input for the speaker from the all transistor radio to the 7 inch record player. The St. Regis two-door hardtop gave a unique three-tone paint job

This vehicle:

1956 Chrysler Town & Country New Yorker
The Chrysler comes with power steering, power brakes, working a/c and automatic transmission. The engine runs strong, the transmission shifts like it should and the brakes stop, but not as good as they should. All the glass is good. All the windows go up and down including the manual tailgate window. In 2007 the car was rewired using a Rhode Island complete wiring harness. At that time all the wheel cylinders, brake hoses, brake shoes and master cylinder were replaced. The floors and the chassis are solid. The only issue is some rot on one of the rocker panels. The other issues are the paint is cracking, the right side exhaust manifold has a leak, the clock and the fuel gauge do not work. Overall this is a nice solid driving car. The Chrysler is being sold as is. The Chrysler has a New York transferable registration. We did not have titles back then. If you have any questions please ask.

Not sure why,  but it just seems very ho hum. The ancient looking tires don't help sell a car you are trying to get top dollar for.  Interior also looks wrong to me.  Like they went to a fabric store and got some 50's looking fabric for the inserts. Paint looks tired as well.  Could just need a good buffing or wet sanding and buffing but overall a very lackluster presentation.  Now compare it to Matt's wife's car.  Matt should post a photo of hers here for comparison.

It does look kind of blah. I've looked at this particular car a lot, if only to divine how they installed the A/C compressor, which I plan to do on Melanie's car.

I think part of the reason why Melanie's car pops is the color. The paint on her pink car is probably only a 6 at best--lots of age, not super shiny, and you can see some sanding scratch underneath in some areas. It wasn't a really high-dollar job. It's good from 10 feet away and we like cars like that because we use them daily and drive them in the rain, with kids inside, and leave them in parking lots unattended--you know, things you do with an actual car. I also think the chrome wire wheels, which I bought from a fellow board member here, absolutely MAKE the car. Hubcaps are correct, but they're pretty plain. I don't know about the interior, but Melanie's is correct and beautifully restored and is also plaid, but a different pattern (this might also be a Windsor vs. New Yorker thing). We also spent a LOT of time and effort detailing the engine bay, which is always important to me.

EDIT: I don't know why I can't upload anymore photos, I haven't hit the size limit. I'll try to get some exterior shots. Odd.

That Long Island car is probably right at home on the streets in the Hamptons. I was out there on business at the air base a few years ago. We were driving down a village business street and I asked the person with me "Do you notice everything looks like it is 1950's Twilight Zone?" Everything, the architecture, signage, storefronts. I think there is a whole different thing going on there. And the car will be for sale for another forever.

Memorable place.

With those close ups and even not so, the paint looks much rougher than I thought.  The big rust spot is ugly, and the entire rear looks like it's checked with weird possibly rust bubbling underneath. There is even checking coming through on the rear doors.  Probably the real reason it hasn't sold.  At today's rates,  no one wants to step into a full paint job on a car like this.

I would  have thought this Chrysler would have sold by now. There weren't that many New Yorker  wagons built, and it has a 354 Hemi. All good selling points, but I agree with auburnseeker, too many things going on with this Chrysler. You have check out in person.
