Starting wage $0.75/hr. 1/10th of today's. And this was during a "gs war". Probably closer to $0.33 normally. Dought a car there obtained over 15 mpg versus few do not get at least 20/25 today. A kid could work while in school making a few bucks to date, buy a few things etc., the station could make a few bucks to pay him and still pay the Oil Companies their share plus the overhead it took to run the business... Who says a buck didn't go farther back then?? Actually, 26.9 cents a gallon in the early 1950's is the equivalent of $2.60 per gallon today. That's right about where most of the United States is today--even with higher gasoline taxes--and some states are substantially lower than $2.60. All things are relative. Isn't it a bit comforting to know that we're not paying more for gas, relatively speaking, than our fathers or grandfathers did?

And most cars go 1 1/2 to 2 times as far on that gallon. Ben Edited November 6, 2019 by Ben Bruce aka First Born (see edit history)

Elpad
http://theoldmotor.com/?p=160971 This is one of many causeways connecting Miami Beach with the mainland. This is on the northern part of the island, maybe around Bal Harbour. Let me look at the map! I believe there still a service station there but have not driven through there in years. You just got me interested in taking a modern picture to post and compare.
