  1. As far as the bumpers go, you must remember that this was 1933. Times were hard and money was tight. If a manufacturer could shave a few bucks here and there, well ok. I know that 1932 wasn't a banner year for profits but 1933 was just as bad plus Chrysler had suffered 1932 also. As an aside, my bumpers, while re-chromed, have held up well (better than the ones in the OP). Zeke
  2. The car may be a 'decent buy at 16" if you are only luke warm about owning a 1933 Dodge coupe, but how much is someone willing to pay if the car really speaks to them? I paid dear for my '33 DP coupe but the cost was acceptable to me. How often do you see unaltered versions of this car for sale? While I was trying to negotiate price with the previous owner of my car his phone never stopped ringing. I knew that if I didn't buy at his price, the next looker would and I wanted that car. I soon forgot the discomfort of price. When I asked about the bottom dollar price, the owner said:"Look son, I like the looks of that car. So much so that I could sit in the garage and look at it all day. If you want it this is the money. If not, ok." What the car is worth is what the highest bidder will pay and the owner will accept. 3. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned an Airflow. !930's rock solid, factory overdrive, easy to find mechanical parts, the list goes on and on. The engine was situated over the front axle and the rear seat was placed ahead of the rear axle which makes for good handling and a comfortable ride. They are nice tour cars, especially the DeSotos. Zeke
  4. I used to own a 1928 Chrysler with external contracting brakes. They can be difficult to adjust and bleed." Reasonably well" was the best I achieved. Zeke
  5. The rigid top you describe is known as a California top. Many Flints came equipped with them. I have seen probably a half dozen open Flints and all have the California top. Zeke
  6. Andy's Garage in Ellendale DE (302)245-7276 replaces the straps with Kevlar. andysgarage@comcast.net. I've not tried them but it sounds like a good premise. Kevlar is tough stuff. Zeke
  7. If you have a radiator shop "boil" your tank out the seams may suffer. Best to pressure clean it, wash it out with dish washing detergent, use the the etching solution from Eastwood and seal it with sealer. Tough love, I know but that fixes the rust problem. Zeke
  8. Interesting phrasing, considering the topic. Zeke
  9. I was at Hershey 25 or so years ago wandering the rows in that daze that comes over you at about 2:00pm. I stopped to look for an owners manual at a paper vendor. The guy in front of me asked the vendor if he had any titles for a 1937 Chevrolet. The vendor went back into his trailer and came out with one. The customer stood looking at the title and started to jump up and down exclaiming "This is to MY car!". What are the odds? Zeke
  10. Don't worry. You won't start out in 3rd many times before you get the hang of it. Experience is a wonderful teacher. Zeke
  11. How well I know the feeling. Yesterday I was under my '23 Hudson doing some maintenance and looked at the ragged teeth on the flywheel. I started the car today for the first time in six years, The starter spun that super six just like the flywheel teeth were brand spankin' new For me, its a fight for another day. Zeke
  12. Hard to identify upside down and sideways, but looks like some sort of replicar to me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. Zeke
  13. Tell him that that the body is wood framed with a metal skin. These don't make good street rods because that type of body won't hold up very well and is difficult to modify. Zeke
  14. Replacement shut-off valves used to be common, but I haven't looked for one in a while. Take it off and show it to the counter man at NAPA. Zeke
  15. For some unknown reason I kept the receipt from Uvira. I had my reflectors done in 2000. The phone number on the ticket is (541)956-6880. Hope this helps. Zeke
  16. I gave one of my cars the Uvira treatment 10 years ago. Still look brand new. Zeke
  17. If you want your money back anytime soon, let me know. Zeke
  18. I recently moved my linkage from the short stroke to the middle for an unrelated issue. before I shimmed up my solenoid the gas pedal would go all the way to the floor while the starter was cranking. When the weather cools a bit I will give the car a road test and evaluate. Zeke
  19. Thanks. I will check for the drain. Zeke
  20. I don't know about other models, but on the '33 the accelerator linkage works in conjunction with the starter linkage. What happens is when you push on the starter, the linkage pushes the accelerator down, feeding the carburetor gasoline while the engine cranks. On my car this was feeding too much gasoline to the carburetor. I improvised a cap over the starter solenoid which started the engine cranking without dumping much gas into the carburetor. I haven't done any road testing yetand don't know if this will work. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do about it? Zeke
  21. The saddest sentence in the English language," I'll put it here where I won't forget it." Oh yeah, I've been down that long road. Zeke
  22. Several years ago, my wife and I drove to Cleveland OH on July 4 to look at a '32 Plymouth PB roadster. Six hour drive getting there at 9:00 pm. I walked around the car three times and decided it was not worth the asking price and thinking that there was no room for negotiating. Besides, I hate to make an offer on someones stuff. We left Cleveland at 11:00 pm, spent the night in Columbus and got home the next day. Unbeknownst to me, a friend went up within twelve hours of my visit, looked at the car, and made a reasonable offer, based on price guides and bought the car.Maybe I should have thrown out a figure. You never know. Zeke
  23. Joe, I wouldn't classify posters comments as complaints. People are stating their opinions about modified automobiles. You may disagree with those opinions and respond accordingly but do you want to hide them because you disagree with them? Some people look at an old car and see it as a finished work of (industrial) art. Others look on an old car as a blank canvas on which they can express their artistic abilities. In other words, they are saying "I think the car looks better with my modifications. What do you think of my abilities?" I have as much right give an opinion on his effort as the builder had a right to make his artistic statement. Zeke
