Automobilia or Petroliana

Recommended Posts

Perhaps this has come up before but is there any interest in a section for Automobilia/Petroliana type stuff in this forum? Good bet most have some level of interest in this stuff and some may be more avid collectors. Not sure if it makes sense here but I figured I would throw it out and see what people think?

Don't worry. The only one you really need is Sinclair.

As I tell my wife and boss, please hang in there, as once in a while I am able to come up with a good idea

Seriously, hope this does go over well. Wayne was wondering what I was thinking, just a couple thoughts -

A general topics & maybe a buy and sell section.

Pretty much everything could be discussed in the general topics area-

What do you collect? (all types of automobilia, not just petroliana, although that is mostly what I like - dealer items, automotive art, rare books, racing, etc.)

Tech help

values & help identify an item/era

Insurance? I know of one of the auto insurers considering offering coverage for this stuff, and while my collection is not huge, this would interest me.

Preservation vs. restoration pros and cons, clean up tips, etc.

Get the picture? While not huge by any means my collection is pretty eclectic. Got some bigger stuff when it was cheap enough to buy, and have recently been getting into some cheaper items like oil bottles, tag toppers and such. I admit my ulterior motive is to learn more about this end of the hobby - I tend to buy what appeals to me, graphics and condition are key. Looking forward to June!

Yes - do it! I've got collections of collections - from spark plugs and sheet music to signs and mascots. This is the section where we can post pictures of all those neat old gas stastions, porcelain signs, gas pumps, spark plugs, and stuff. I'll be there frequently. I've also started looking for early St.Christophers with cars illustrated on them. Don't have as many as Bob but it is fascinating how many varieties are out there. How about those little pen knives with the handles shaped like cars? Anybody know how many different types are out there? I've got 7 or 8 different. Most were touring cars, but I finally picked up one with a sedan body on it. Will try and hang some pics in the new section when it appears.

Happy collecting!

Terry

Now, there is another good idea. Would love to see a column in the AACA mag. (Already improved 10 times over recently, got me back into AACA this year after 15 years!) The stuff is everywhere -

Found a 1930 AAA Motorist's guide to New England, hardbound, very good condition, for $10 in a used bookstore on Martha's Vineyard a couple years ago, no one else I know has one of these to go with their 1930 whatevermobile. My dad then came up with a hardbound hardware & auto parts catalog, same vintage, in mint condition. Very interesting info in both about prices, services, and driving conditions of the day.

Locally we are looking for new material for our newsletter. Since many club members in my local "A" club are very knowledgeable, I figure I can't write much they don't already know about our cars but I may submit some short bits on this stuff for our local newsletter. It's fun, and like our cars, you can spend a little or a lot and still enjoy, and if you buy right, probably make a buck. My problem is I really don't want to sell anything, but may look to do some trading on duplicates.

Restorer32, do you happen to have a black, probably Model T roadster in your planter collection? Lettered in white on the back "excuse my dust" - My grandmother had one of these, I would play with it for hours, long gone now.... I later learned these were a series but you probably know all about that if you collect them. It may interest you to know that our club used a bunch of these types of planters as centerpieces for the MARC New England meet (50th) last fall - winners at each table took them home.

Is that a VW in the background also Bob? Har har.

VW also used a St. Christopher motif for the old "100,000 KM" medallions--see below:
