1929 Chrysler Series 65

Hi everyone!

 

I hope you're well. 

 

I need your help if possible. The starter engine of my Chrylser series 65 doesn´t work...or rather...the electric engine of the starter works but it does not move the flywheel....

 

It´s a Delco Remy: 714-D  196144    MADE IN U.S.A.  

 

I don´t know what happened.....

 

Someone have a technical scheme? or photos of other starter´s?

If 29Chry's understanding of your post is correct (spins but doesn't throw into flywheel) and assuming engine is free, not locked up, while on bench when your moved gear back into contact position did it move freely/easily??? Looks clean in photo but if any stickiness/resistance could be sticking on  inner crud etc..

If throwing into flywheeland spinning should make some scraping noise even if teeth broken off---but do inspect flywheel teeth, as mentioned above; starter gear looks like appreciable wear, flywheel probably has similar, you may want to remove/replace or turn around original if replacement needed but NLA...If no inspection place, with starter off take plugs out, should be able to rotate by belt, checking teeth thru starter hole..

If throws in but won't turn, pop the band and check brush contacts; problem would be elec failure somewhere---starter  getting enough power to throw in but not enough to turn engine over.

..at this moment..the starter is in the electrician..to inspect... but it´s not easy have the knowledge about a starter with almost 90 years ...that´s why I ask about some technical scheme, or pics...!I don´t know if some spring is missing in the bendix....

 

The flywheel seems ok...the starter never missing...until yesterday...but I will rotate the flywheel 360º to check all the teeth

 

at worst...the car have the hole for hand crank start...it´s possible star this engine with hand crank??...I never did that...

If the engine turns over freely with the crank handle and the starter motor spins when you activate the starter, then its highly likely that the internal Bendix spring has broken.

Sourcing a replacement spring will be difficult, you need a vintage supply specialist to source one; any good auto electrician should be able to install it for you.

Having said that, an on line search for vintage starter repairs should unearth a fix for you.

Here is the spring broken...

 

does anyone know where I can find  one??

Fortunately I already tested, and the engine start with hand crank...but I have to repair the starter...!

If you are in the US it is easy to source through a starter shop. I had one put in my '39 Allis-Chalmers last fall. Overnight delivery and $27.

 

My starter has a single locking bolt too! IT is hidden by the hydraulic line.

Hi everyone and thanks for all the answers,

The spring is the only part broken of the starter..

 

I soldered the spring! It´s working! but, of course..it is not to trust...whenever I can, I start the engine with the hand cranck. I have to keep looking!

 

On the other hand...

 

- I´m also looking for a flathead engine, in this case, the "silver dome"...is cracked in the 5º 6º cylinder, and lose some water when is very hot....anyone knows where can I find one?

 

 

- the engine is working with a fuel pump airtex (6v) that have 5 - 8 psi. I want to by another one, but I only find the same model with 2,5 - 4 psi !! Its really necessary this engine have 5-8 psi? or I´m spending fuel exaggeratedly? What is your opinion?

Which is the correct spring. They may have the other spring for sale separately as well, send an email to Ross - top bloke.

I was hoping the other bendix parts would suit my starter, but no luck without modification.

Also, the spring bolt holes need 'reducing' to make the existing bolts fit correctly. Not a difficult task.
