Guest Mc_Reatta
Gotta flare those rear fenders so I can get some fat tires on there for the track! What, wait, it's front wheel drive? Oops, guess I throw it on Craig's list.

Guest RaverReatta
Lol! I must say I'm definitely not a fan of the look, but as an advocate for open-mindedness and originality, I say as long as the owner likes what they see then it's great. I'm guessing that they don't feel that way seeing that it's for sale on craigslist for $400 though... It is definitely not a sight for sore eyes... haha. KDirk
The Pinto also had that unusual rear rocket booster, but it was rather unpredictable and was only good for one use. KDirk
Machiner 55
Now just wait a gosh darned minute. Rocket packs, front wheel drive!?? The Pinto I bought from Hirsch Ford in Michigan City, IN. in 1974 had none of the features.I'm crestfallen. It did have rack and pinion steering though.John F. ol' yeller
As I remember the rear rocket booster, you couldn't activate it by yourself and had no control over someone else triggering it.

Ronnie
Yours had steering??? :confused:That question could be applied to the Vega as well. It didn't have rack&pinion. My Vega came with a bad engine that I replaced with 301 small block (327 block with a 283 crank), 350 turbo, narrowed 10 bolt and Monza 5 lug spindles and hubs. It was a lot of fun in a straight line but it was by far the worst driving car I ever owned. I hated it from the first time I drove it. I kept it less then six months before I got rid of it. rjfranken
Can't remember nuttin. Omni Horizon Rabbit and those with slicks. I wasn't trying to be so literal. Guest Corvanti
if i recall correctly, the first "modern" FWD GM vehicles (exempting the Eldorado & Toronado) were the '80 Chevy Citation and its other division stablemates.
ol' yeller
I didn't buy either of those weird, ugly, undependable autos in the 70's, Vega or Pinto. I bought a Gremlin!
rjfranken
There was something about that green paint Gremlins used that held those cars together longer. Ford had that blue paint that got that purple patina holding off aging.Back to the PAU thread.
Guest Richard D
I beat you all, Vegas, Gremlins, Pintos, etc. I was 17 and my first brand new car was a 1971 Plymouth Cricket! Should have bought something else, anything else, I had a $2,600 limit. It did have nice interior and A/C.
ol' yeller
My '71 Gremlin was purchased new for $2,100. It had a three speed standard floor shift trans with no syncros in first. The wipers were vacuum operated. It had the 232 straight six. It was a miserable little car. Only the engine was trouble free. The shifter was sloppy and would jam if you looked at it wrong. The clutch was too small and only good for about 12,000 miles. The tranny needed constant repairs. The body (hinges, windows and moving parts) fell apart just weeks after the warranty (12 months). The interior started disintegrating after the 4, 000 mile warranty ran out. My happiest day was the one when I helped my little brother (I gave it to him) trade it in on a push, pull, or drag sale. (It was pull). How did you know my Gremlin was green? (with black hockey stick racing stripes). The only good thing about that car was that on my first date with my wife to be, my mother in law was impressed by my car. 2seater
Had cars and motorcycles before, but my first new car, actually spec'd and ordered, was a 1975 AMC Pacer. 258 straight six, three speed on the floor, but big dumb move, no A/C. Had the car one year until the warranty was up and traded it on a new Hornet wagon, 304 V8 and A/C. Wish I still had the Pacer. Guess that explains my sense (or not) of style. KDirk
Well, if this hasn't turned into a recounting of the worst ideas out of Detroit in the 70's. Pintos, Vegas, Gremlins, Crickets, sheesh. Remember the Levi's edition Gremlin? Let me move things up about a decade by disclosing my first car was a 1984 Ford Escort GL. Wine red exterior with a burgundy cloth interior. Actually wasn't a bad car for the first few years (bought it used in 90) but after about 6 years it began falling apart, slowly at first. A/C died, rust set in and then the #3 cylinder lost compression. Sold it for parts (this was in 1999) as the interior was still fairly decent and had good wheels and tires, among other newer parts. That is when I got my first Cadillac. Now I enjoy driving an older car, but that is because I know what I'm doing now and can keep them going. handmedownreatta
actually id like to have a pinto/vega body.with the right combination of parts you can build a fi v8 car that will run 14s and get 30 mpg on the freeway.id put a fuel cell in the pinto though.
