FUN Fantasy Locations For a BCA National

Recommended Posts

OK well my first post went off in a completely different direction than I intended, but that's OK.

I am going to try again, this time asking that everybody follow the conditions below.

First off I had hoped everyone would give cool FUN fantasy locations and just spout out reason why they thought their location would make a cool National Meet. FUN is the key word.

OK Conditions.

1. Imagine the BCA National meet costs no money to attend, it costs you nothing to get there, stay there, for your meals, NO MONEY.

2. It is ideal PERFECT weather and time of year is not an issue... it is whenever you want it to be.

3. Pretend I am not a BOD and that I am just a BCA Member trying to get a cool thread going (cause I AM!!)

OK other conditions

A. No Negative post about other peoples cool locations. They have their opinion you have yours, so be it. Just post your cool location.

B. No negative posts about the BCA, the Cost of the Meets, how meets are run, whatever. I want this to be a FUN thread. If you want provide constructive criticism, fair enough, but please GO OVER TO THE OTHER THREAD we will use that for constructive criticism as there is a place for that. Here is the link to the other thread http://forums.aaca.org/f115/where-do-you-want-bca-national-274056.html

If you do post negative stuff I am going to ask the moderators to remove it. Fair enough!!

OK lets have FUN with this one.

I would have to say: Route 66 and I really wish it ran through Ohio because everyone knows that Ohio is the land of the Gods and the home of Real Men. GO BUCKEYES

I did rte 66 with the Hot Rod power tour in 2001, and it was GREAT !! It would be very difficult to orchestrate, but I think the people that ran it would have the time of their lives. There are numerous books that will give you the info necessary to run most of the original road. Evenings would need to be spent in areas away from the original road, but not far away enough to be a problem.

it would require more than 3 days, but I am retired, and can spend however much time it takes. GO FOR IT !!!!

Hmmm....

  • Yellowstone - never been there
  • Glacier National Park - been there, worth going back
  • Bonneville Salt Flats (or whatever is nearby) - I want to see The Old Guy get excited about driving
  • Athens, GA - MrEarl will have to attend come heck or high water :D
  • Niagara Falls - I've been near there, but also never seen
  • Thousand Islands, St. Lawrence River - NY / ON border - lovely country
  • Places I haven't seen - covers a lot, but I enjoy seeing new territory
  • Mississippi river boat

I have pretty much a standing offer to come down to the spring event in Texas, so one of these years that will get me to that part of the country, although I'd probably fly in rather than drive down.

A lot of interesting places being mentioned. I just whoever is planning the National would coordinate with the guy at Marine Corps headquarters who is issuing me my orders. :D The upcoming Nationals in Ames would be perfect for me as I will be travelling through Minnesota and Wisconsin as I move to Georgia this summer...unfortunately it starts the day I am supposed to report in to my new duty station in Georgia. The same thing happened with the Rochester meet the year I moved from Wisconsin to California.

Route 66!!

Would like to see this option explored, caravans from both directions, what more could an International visitor wish for.

Do it and I'll be there for sure along with a big mob of rowdy ( thirsty!! ) Aussies. With the way the AUS$ is going compared to the US$ we may even bring some cars and drive on the wrong side of the road!!!

Since Buicks are a hot seller in China, how about holding it at the BIRDNEST (site of the Olympics) in BEIJING, CHINA ??? Places that we could tour: the firecracker factories (KABOOOOOOM).....toy & chop stick factories....and where they make fortune cookies (I am still wondering what kind of typewriters they use to type fortunes inside of a cookie)......all participants will get a free camera!!!

I certainly can't argue with any of Thriller's excellent suggestions. I can only add Great Smoky Mountains or Chattanooga, Anywhere in Utah, Rapid City, and Las Vegas!

Now, money being no object.....Hawaii, Alaska, Bahamas, and I know we're the BCA, but how about Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Cuba or Canada(would have to let Thriller pick the site as I am not familiar!)

Great Thread!

ROFL. OK...let me check...um...some places we could rule out as there are no roads going there. Charlottetown PEI is another place I've never been that has some tourist appeal. There's a few car places around here in Winnipeg...it is hardly a destination in and of itself, but there are a few neat museums, a few automotive / transportation locations that would be worthwhile seeing, other interesting sites / activities...channel catfish capital of the world is just north of the city. It's about a 3 hour drive, but there is an automotive museum in western Manitoba that has a significant collection of early McLaughlins and McLaughlin Buicks. I'd have to think about a location for a show field / hotel though. There's riverboat tours, including a supper cruise on the Paddlewheel Queen. Working with the numbers could be a challenge, but something could be made to work. If someone is genuinely interested, I did a bit of a tour for Labour Day weekend 2009...we had fun, but few attendees from south of the border. I could easily put a small tour together again as there are many ideas. For more information on Winnipeg, see DiscoverWinnipeg.ca - Winnipeg Travel, Manitoba, Tourism, Hotels, Hotel Reservations, Canada

There's many other locations...for natural beauty there's Waterton Lakes National Park (on the Montana border) - we honeymooned there or Jasper National Park. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is a nice city with a lot of attractions.

Getting into Quebec or Ontario could be better spoken to by others on the forum, but Kingston is a nice spot, with Old Fort Henry (also near the Thousand Islands area). Oshawa has a great Buick / GM history component and the McLaughlin Buick Club of Canada has done numerous tours in the area.

Canada is a big place, but a huge proportion of the population is within a short distance of the US border, so it isn't venturing that far.

The more I think about it, any place can be fun, at least for me and my family. Every place of any size has some interesting shops / museums / history / activities. Some things that other folks may be interested in don't interest me much (casinos as an example) and vice versa. The trick is to planning something that covers everyone in a price range they are comfortable with.

Since this is a Fantasy thread, here's MrEarl's suggestion.

Los Angeles...and at 7:00 Friday evening, all those so inclined drive their Buicks over to 10236 Charing Cross Rd for the Girls on Buicks Judging. What's at 10236 Charing Cross Rd you ask.

The Playboy Manision of course.

Looks like plenty of room for a show field to me. :)

I see a couple people said something about Rapid City SD or the Black Hills area. If we area ever in the same boat as we were this year with no chapter to host I would be willing to help host a National in Rapid City. I am at the other end of the state but 90 is 75 MPH and it doesn't take long to drive out there. I have thought many times about starting a chapter here in the Sioux Falls area but working weekends and holiday and driving during the week doesnt give me much time. I suppose that working weekends is the biggest obstacle because most meetings and shows would have to be then.

Thanks for offering to volunteer Sid. We spend a couple days in Rapid City on our way home from Colorado Springs. There is certainly a lot to see and do in the area, including a car museum in Murdo, not far away (unfortunately we didn't have time to stop there in either direction).

Got a good friend north of the border that keeps me abreast of such things. He pointed out the trampoline in the picture too. Hadn't noticed that. That might give some competition to the show cars.

50jetback, that Corvette Todd and Buzz were in did have tendencies to break down in certain areas of Route 66 (adding to the story line as they had to wait for parts to arrive from "back east"), so they might enjoy the smooooth comfort and reliability of a Grand Buick. Probably about the same number of fuel stops (probably leading to some other story lines of damsels "with issues", but with the interior space of a Buick, they could rescue such damsels right then and there rather than get involved in fixing things locally, maybe even rearrange their luggage to covertly sneak them to safety in the capacious trunk).

They could still roll the windows down as they had to in the Corvette, but we know Buicks had much better interior ventilation than Corvettes did back then. Throw open the cowl vent(s) and enjoy the breeze!

Enjoy!

RE: "Route 66 Venues" End of July, 2010 is the Intl T-bird Club's yearly meet in Springfield, IL . . . whose meet happenings includes a driving tour to the Route 66 Museum in Atlanta, IL. Crowne Plaza in Springfield, IL is the host hotel ($92.00/night room rate). A FULL WEEK of activities, ending in their concours judging and such later in the week.

I discovered this doing some club link information, so I present it for informational purposes, being this is a fantasy meet location thread.

Enjoy 2010 and your BUICKS!
