  1. Wichita obtained its nickname - Doodah - thanks to beat poet Allen Ginsburg. In his poem Wichita Vortex Sutra he referred to Wichita as Doodah. He lived here for a time in the 60's and meant Doodah to be a mild insult. In truth, he liked it in Wichita, because it was safe and quiet during the upheaval of war and unrest across the country. Wichita didn't embrace him as a native son, but he was celebrated as a well known and popular cultural artist of the time. So Mr. Wiegand is repeating a sugar coated lie.
  2. Did he have a large number of autos and motorcycles scattered around Wichita in storage units?
  3. And I STILL can't get on the SDC forum longer than a few seconds. This is a serious failure by anyone in charge of the SDC's internet presence.
  4. I was working 2nd shift then. Dad called me early and said Turn on the tv! What channel? Doesn't matter! Just in time to see the 2nd tower fall. Watched tv all day until I got to work. They all wanted to know how bad it was... I said Worse than you could ever imagine. In my mind, that was the day the 21st century really began.
  5. Well, I hit it tonight and found 8 pages of new posts...
  6. For a couple days the SDC website has been unavailable. What happened?
  7. Keep in mind most of the Willys gassers these days are fiberglass - not steel.
  8. They didn't make hubcaps from cast iron, did they?
  9. Novelty buildings used to be a big part of American roadside culture.
  10. There are multiple busy shops here in Wichita doing restorations, hot rods, and boats. They aren't going anywhere.
  11. Since the cops caught at least one of the dumbasses who stole it, hopefully he'll turn in his fellow morons and they'll all enjoy some well-deserved time in the slammer.
  12. I remember the cover of AutoWeek when Lee Iacocca was driving a K-car he'd had turned into a convertible.
  13. Obviously, we used different sources. I doubt either of us were there to witness it.
  14. The very first Le Mans winner drove his personal Blower Bentley. They have quite a history at Le Mans.
  15. Fresh Step kitty litter. Scatter a bunch of it around in the car, leave it for a week. Vacuum up all the kitty litter. Now your car will smell like laundry soap..
  16. None, of course - but someone did drive a Blower Bentley around the track during the pre-race events.
  17. Anyone here actually watch the race? Ferrari came close to losing to Toyota, with Cadillac hot on the heels of both teams. There were lots of American teams to cheer for if you wanted. Chevy was running a Camaro and a Corvette - both for the last time at Le Mans. The Camaro was a fan fave (it was the loudest of the Detroit iron). Ford ran a Mustang in GT3. Rain, and the perils of racing for 24 hours took their toll. It was a very good race, in my opinion.
