  1. I'm not looking, it just keeps jumping up on my screen. REALLY! I was looking for '95/'96 RMW doors for my Olds... Anyway, this little gem is in Abilene, Kansas, home of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who happened to be our nation's President in the year... (wait for it)...   2. I just wanted to say how nice it was to see some love for the Opel GT in the August 2016 Bugle. For years I've thought I'd like to buy my mom a Karmann Ghia, because as a kid she told me she once tried to buy one but her father wouldn't let her. After drooling over a freshly restored GT at a local car show, she told me she only settled for the Ghia because she couldn't afford a GT, but it's the Opel she really wanted. I also found it interesting that the owner of the previously mentioned and drooled on GT (who was also showing a Kadett) really put an emphasis on the fact that his Opels were also Buicks. It was on his signage and he reiterated that fact to anyone who would listen, but he was a member of the Opel Club, not the BCA. I kinda wish there was a little more activity down here, although my budget appreciates not having a constant reminder of another project hanging out on my bucket list.
  3. Did I miss something? Is this a 2 for one? Where's this Skylark the copy writer keeps talking about? Descriptions like this scare me. When someone is compelled to tell you how right, correct, or rare something is, alarm bells start going off.
  4. There's a limit of 19.53 MB - obviously Speedo didn't set this limit, or it would have been 19.FITTY FO MB. When I was trying to upload car show pix from my phone a couple weeks ago, I busted the limit. I tried fewer & fewer pix and determined that it wasn't going to let me post any after busting it on the first try. I gave up and made a post with no photos, then edited the post to add them after the fact.

  6. I was Spam shopping the other day, and while the jalapeño Spam was calling my name, there was something intriguing about the black pepper variety. I think it spoke to my deeply rooted love for black Buicks. Plus, it's fun: Are those dark spots on my meat mold or pepper? Who cares, they are yummy!
  7. Are you looking to do the master cylinder and the wheel cylinders? The wheel cylinders aren't terribly exotic. The AutoZone a mile from my house has the rears in stock for about $12 each. The story I'm told with the '56 MCs is that the cylinder bore isn't really an issue. Yes, overhauls on these are pricey, but the bore itself isn't normally a problem. I've seen several say they had theirs re-bored and the experts come in and tell them they were ripped-off. I've never torn one down myself, so I'm not a 1st hand expert on the situation...
  8. Two cars in Tucson posted on the same day... Makes me wish I was still doing the auto transport thing. I'd just about pick up the FITTY FO at cost to justify going down there to get that Riv for myself. Maybe it's a sign. Maybe God is telling me to buy a new rig. Or maybe God is telling me to get off the internets and go work on a car I already have. Naw, if it were the latter, it wouldn't be three hundred degrees outside at nine in the morning.

  11. Some Google searching shows a lot of arguments about this. It is there to reduce arcing across the points, there's no doubt about that. The arcing will create radio interference and it will shorten the life of the points, but the primary concern seems to be radio interference, and the actual effect on regulator life is arguable (probably minimal). It is optional, but will destroy the regulator if hooked up to the field circuit (although it seems to me the field points would make more noise than the reverse cut-out). The condenser at the generator is the same story, to reduce arcing across the commutator. I don't think anyone is arguing that brushes & commutators last longer when there's a capacitor at the generator. The condenser at the coil is obviously strictly noise suppression. If you have arcing in the coil, radio noise is the least of your concerns.
  12. That's interesting... I don't know that I've ever seen a condenser (capacitor) on a voltage regulator before, but it's probably there for the same reason you have one in your distributor: To make the points last longer. Install an alternator. You could also put smaller pulley on the generator* and bump the voltage up at the regulator. The generator can only charge if it is allowed to make more voltage than is available at the battery. If it is under-charging, even at cruise, you may need to bump it up. Any idea how many volts you are making at cruise? *For the record, I'm not really advocating a pulley change...
  13. With headlights on? Maybe. With no load? I don't think so. Put a volt meter on it and see what the difference is between battery voltage (engine off) and idle voltage. If idle voltage is higher, the generator is probably doing what it can. If voltage goes down, that would indicate that the cut-out is preventing field excitement and needs to be tweaked a little.
  14. FWIW:. GM does not license the Dextron III name, and Dex VI (note that we skipped 4&5) is lower viscosity than the previous fluids. Like engine oil, systems designed for higher vis fluid are likely to see accelerated wear with the lower vis fluid (you wouldn't put 5W30 in a Nailhead, would you?). Because of this, there's still a huge market for Dex III, although nobody is allowed to use that name anymore. If you see funny verbiage on a bottle regarding the Dex III spec, it's not that they are trying to make you think it meets the spec when it doesn't. They can't call it Dex III anymore, but it's what you want.

  17. FWIW... I just pulled an aux transmission cooler out of a '96 B-body Caddy to install in the '91 OCC (which will be a tow rig when I'm done with it). The factory plumbing went to the aux cooler first, then into the radiator tank, and back to the trans... $13 for the cooler, $20 for the lines...
  18. Funny story (at least it is to me): When we first got our '56, we noted a little metal tab (not so little, really) welded to the back bumper. Something had been welded on, then cut off with a blow torch. We we always assumed it was the remanent of a trailer hitch. Lots of hitches were welded on, back in the day. When we pulled the bumper for rechroming, I ground the tab and weld off, but found no evidence of a weld on the opposite side of the bumper. What in the world? Then one day I'm watching an episode of Highway Patrol and I notice something: those patrol cars have a radio antenna attached to the back bumper in the same location we had the tab. Our little mystery tab had to be the heaviest duty CB antenna known to man! The ORIGINAL driver's ash tray had 2 holes drilled in it, and from day one, dad assumed a CB mic was hung there, but somehow we never put 2 & 1 together. The moral of the story is this: Please, don't weld to your bumper (or drill your ash tray), there are better ways!
  19. I don't think anyone is unclear about the meaning behind the terms factory correct/original or OEM; only the value placed on such. Being overrated, by definition, is to have a higher opinion of something than it deserves. I think Ben was simply stating that he has a higher opinion of Anne's seats than the original design, and that some people have a higher opinion of the simple state of being "correct" than he thinks it deserves. Ben, if I'm off base here, tell me to go back to painting SCALLOPS.
  20. The setup was a little different when we had the Dynaflow rebuilt, but I didn't get any photos. This was just the torque ball a couple years ago.
  21. No, I'm not happy. I think you were "correct" the first time, and now you've made an aftermarket change to your statement and it's less authentic. I'm trying really hard to refrain from escalating a semantics argument. I think I'll go paint some SCALLOPS on a VISOR instead...
  22. Well, they are certainly unique. If you REALLY want to make grandpa happy, you might try pulling the mirror and looking for a name or number cast into the underside of the base.
  23. Yes, A5s were used on GM cars from '55 to '61, but there were different pulleys used on different cars. Apparently there was also a flange on the back of the '55-'57 compressors, which is inconsequential to this discussion, except to say that not all A5s are built equally. My guess is that there may be changes in the clutch assembly depending on the pulley setup used.
  24. Good stuff, thanks Pete! I find it interesting that they recommended putting in a switch to kill the on car blinkers. I guess a heavy-duty blinker wasn't an option then?
